- “We choose to go to the Moon. We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard…”
In his speech at Rice University, Texas, in September 1962, President John F. Kennedy reaffirmed America's commitment to an extraordinary, startling project: landing a man on the Moon by the end of the decade. Facing fierce competition from the U.S.S.R., it would take 11 missions of unimaginable danger to reach this goal, with Neil Armstrong first setting foot on the Moon’s rocky surface on July 21st, 1969.
"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
650 million people watched in awe that day, as Apollo 11 unfolded on live TV. In today’s episode, Tom and Dominic are joined by one of those people, very special guest TOM HANKS, actor, filmmaker and expert on all things Apollo-related, to discuss the epic saga of how humankind made it to the Moon and back. From the tragedy of Apollo 1 and the disaster of Apollo 13, to Buzz Aldrin's "religious moment" after the Eagle had landed, driving foldable cars on the Moon, and the arguments over who would get to take the first lunar steps, Tom Hanks, Dominic Sandbrook and Tom Holland look at the dangerous, daring, and incredible stories of the Apollo missions.
The Moonwalkers: A Journey with Tom Hanks is on at Lightroom, in King’s Cross, London, until the 13th of October 2024.

I have no idea how you 2 were able to get the great Tom Hanks on your show but that was a real treat! Thank you!
Looking forward to the Franco Prussian War with Zendaya next week!
I’d watch that! I reckon she could bluff it if you gave her a couple of days to read up.
I was lucky enough to meet, chat and interview two Apollo astronauts in person before they passed away. They were always kind and sharp, representing the very best of what America was, is, can, will and should be.
Any movie involving history and Hanks is a must watch for me because he cares about history and does his best to get it right. Great conversation. Thanks.
Tom (Holland) throwing Dominic under the bus at 43:50 has had me laughing all day.
Tom Hanks is the ultimate dad, I love it, he’s just so pure and genuine in his interest in history, for someone with a very fortunate and successful career elsewhere.
He is on the Epstein lists. He has a proclivity for little girls.
Tom Hanks is uniquely able to tell these stories. He is from the same generation that I’m from and his description of how we were steeped in “the space race” as kids in the US during the 60s is right on target. Great episode! P.S. I also love “ From the Earth to the Moon”, his series that was on HBO. It’s worth a watch on DVD or streaming.
This is a nice surprise before I go to work
Hanks premium value added
Cant believe you invited Woody on to discuss Buzz Lightyear stuff...
What a fantastic episode. I love the Rest is History podcast. I'm a long time listener. Having Tom Hanks on is a really testament to the quality of the podcast and he gave some really fanstastic insight. Amazing. Cheers to that.
I’ve wondered what makes this podcast so bloody good. There’s much to consider but Dominic’s laugh is the glue that holds it together ❤
The love between these two makes this show great
I could listen to the three of you for hours.
This was an absolute treat. Love Tom Hanks and he clearly knows his space stuff. Great episode!
That podcast was magnificient. What a great guy Tom Hanks is. Thank you.
Incredible acting talent ... and also Tom Hanks.
What a fantastic guest! Tom Hanks has such a real enthusiasm, I loved this edition!
Tom Hanks is a great bloke, his depth of knowledge about anything he is involved in is inspiring.
Dear Tom Hanks is such a great story teller. If you put him at ease he'll talk for hours and you'd enjoy every second of it.
Brilliant episode! Pleasantly surprised not only did Hanks know his stuff, his answers to those final questions about President Coolidge and AA were intriguing. History can be interesting even about the less than popular or front page news. A wonderful episode.
Brilliantly done, from both sides,Tom is a highly intellectual guy, with rich knowledge about that era,l really enjoyed the whole interview, many thanks .
That final anecdote about the cabbie was absolute gold!
greetings from south wales.. 🙂
thankyou for sharing this
He is just a 100% top guy. Great show, enthusiastically presented. More from Tom, Tom and Dom please
Wow, what a tour de force by Tom! Love this podcast, absolute lads
American treasure..really a world/western treasure..he has inspired me with his art and brought me much joy.
He might be partly responsible for me joining the military,a genuine force of good.
L'Chaim Mr.Hanks:)
Woot woot! Saved to 'watch later' and 'watch repeatedly'!
Lovely. One of the best Rest is History programmes. Tom Hanks is great. But going to the moon and coming back is one of the best Rest is History programmes because plenty of people have built empires or did a Lord Byron with their lives but nobody before 1969 left this planet and landed on another and came back. Hope we do go back to the moon someday because it is hard because we need to see and go beyond ourselves
Tom Hanks
Villa Fan and Actor
Fantastic Listen
Thanks
Absolutely brilliant. Love Apollo. Love Tom Hanks. What better way to spend time.
I enjoyed this podcast from the very dead center of the eclipse totality. Kinda fun.
Fantastic episode, Tom Hanks' knowledge and enthusiasm is infectious - I know he is deep into the detail of WWII so perhaps Tom can put a word in for his brother's podcast
I could listen to Tom all day. I appreciate this is not possible on such a short, single podcast, but I would really love a deep dive into all Apollo mission and the space race. Such a fascinating time.
Tom Hanks seems like he didnt want the episode to end! I know I never wanted it to end! 😂
This was an amazing episode! Tom was such a great guest. Both entertaining and knowledgeable, I learned some new facts about the Apollo program along the way. Keep up the great work guys! Best podcast out there by a long shot
Tom Hanks. Thanks.
Brilliant stuff! Thanks for that.
One small thing that Mr. Hanks mis-spoke about. He made it sound like Neil Armstrong was a civilian who had not been in the military. Neil Armstrong did, in fact, serve in the US Navy as a naval aviator from 1949 to 1952 and flew combat missions over Korea during the Korean War. He then left the active duty military and became a civilian test pilot for military contractors.
It is true that he was not in the military at the time that he was chosen by NASA to become an astronaut. Most of the men who flew in Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo were active duty military at the time they were selected by NASA. Also, most of the others had more time in the military than Neil, off the top of my head, I'd say the average was 15 years.
Tom Hanks mentioned Antarctica. The race to the South Pole would make a good series or something about Shackelton's voyages.
tom holland's JFK moon speech impression is one of the best podcast moments I've ever heard
I was hoping to hear "Charles Lindbergh-- **not** a friend of The Rest Is History Podcast!"
now way! tom hanks is a legend
This was delightful!
Such a Juxtaposition of Hope and History, Brilliantly Displayed, with such Sincerity
3:47 love Dom's subtle product placement!
Armstrong wasn't a career Navy man but he was a commissioned officer.
Excellent episode of rest is history . Tom Hanks is my favourite actor and listening to him talk about the Apollo missions was inspirational (not that I need much as I was born in the 60s too) Thank you to the team and please keep these podcasts coming
Nice one. Thoroughly enjoyed that
Two of my two favorite entities. ROH and Tom Hanks
Brilliant.
This video deserves waaaay more than 500 likes! Love love love your podcast lads. Was watching it for ages before I realised one of the hosts was none other than Tom Holland who wrote one of my fave books of all time, no less...Rubicon!
terrific episode
What a tremendous coup to get Tom Hanks on The Rest is History! He knew his stuff and was great company for an hour. Just the job after five episodes about Martin Luther 😂
I loved the movie Apollo 13.
I am from Houston (pronounced "Hyoo-sten") and find Mr. Hanks' characterization of our swampland metropolis to be quite accurate! 👌 🌟
I would actually be quite interested in a film about Calvin Coolidge!
How is it possible that cab driver did not recognize freaking Tom Hanks?! 😂 that was hilarious😂😂 Great episode!
This has been great!!! :)
Loved the end…what a treat!!!
Tom Hanks document it very well for his part, he discussed with astronauts. So he xan discuss about this.
What a surprise guest! Awesome episode as always
"You can't screw up that text"😂 possibly the most polite insult I've heard in my life
Absolutely brilliant interview. Tom made an excellent mini series in 1998 with Ron Howard and HBO called From The Earth To The Moon.
Toms a very very smart man he knows much more than most of the most.
Cheers from 🇨🇦 Hope you enjoy todays eclipse!
The term national treasure is thrown at way too many people. But it's completely applicable to Mr. Hanks
William Safire, a Nixon speechwriter wrote the speech that Nixon never needed to give.
What a lovely fellow.
Thanks chaps, superb stuff.
I think the early astronauts were almost exclusively test pilots, and were put through an incredible array of OTT testing because it wasn't really known what they were testing for.
Where confidence becomes arrogance is a grey area. Certain roles requite it in spades. Surgeons, middle order batsmen, and pilots especially.
Sitting on top of a Saturn 5 though???!! Madlads.
Best movie I’ve seen great special effects, the way they made them do those bunny hops and jump 6 inches off of the moon was great well done.
I was 17 and have a vague memory of Apollo 11. I have a much stronger memory of the anxious weekend when we thought Apollo 13 was going to end in tragedy.
Saw the moonwalkers on Easter Sunday. My 2 year old granddaughter is excited to know a woman will walk on the moon next year. The moon is something she loves to see in the sky and I am often asked If I can hear it.
That sounds heartwarming Chrissie, you have to be incredibly proud:)
27:40 Surely those men are and wrere very special peoples. "The Right Stuff" is one of my favourite movies. The titule of that movie here in Brazil was "The chosen ones". In Portuguese, of course. "We" usually chose crappy movie titles in Portuguese, but that time "we" got it right.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a comedy science fiction franchise created by Douglas Adams. Originally a 1978 radio comedy broadcast on BBC Radio 4
now there needs to be a the rest is history episode on alcoholics anonymous.
edit: i like the zendaya reference at the end. wonder if dominic winds tom up with that.
Why does Tom Hanks seem so normal, celebrities are usually so weird
Friend of the show, symbologist Robert Langdon.
Give your producer a raise!
Hanks obviously loves the sound of his own voice
When I first saw this I thought there was another historian who had the name of a Hollywood actor - but nope. WOW! He seems like such a charming guy.
Good luck Hanksy
What an awesome guest to have on 👍 However, I think Holland will not be winning any academy awards in the near future 😂
43:47 “The atmospheric entry interface velocity upon return from the Moon is approximately 36,500 ft/s (11.1 km/s; 40,100 km/h; 24,900 mph)”
Tom, Dominic and Mr Hanks. I was telling two friends of mine tonight over drinks about the thrilling story of the Apollo missions and the Space race as a whole, But I was met with condomnation, disregard of the scientific and historical facts of the matter and was given, conspiracies,. politically driven narratives and misled views on the topic. I have to ask as people whom strive to give a truthful, historically accurate and erudite points of view. How does one keep their cool when being bombarded with drunken criticism and internet conspiracy and a wide spread bullshit*t ? Please help me out. 😅 great fan of the show from Cobh, Ireland! Keep up the good work baiis !!
What a Treat ..........
Imagine Neil Armstrong had been an Ulsterman. "It's one small step for (a) Man, so it is!
An Orange parade on the Moon would be quite something
@thejoin4687 you s heads just won't leave it go will you . BB .
I just wonder what take the rest is entertainment will have on this superb guest being on your podcast :D
The Zendaya episode sounds sick
I really enjoyed that. I subscribed a few days ago after watching your Titanic vids. I'm working on a video of my own (shameless plug) about a little-known Titanic story with a Manchester connection. I never thought I would see Hollywood on here. Good for you.
Dominic appears to live in a branch of Waterstones.
Moon Museum is a small ceramic wafer three-quarters by one-half inch (19 by 13 mm) in size, containing artworks by six prominent artists from the late 1960s left on the moon. The artists with works in the "museum" are Robert Rauschenberg, David Novros, John Chamberlain, Claes Oldenburg, Forrest Myers and Andy Warhol.
Wow, I always thought they were real but Tom Hanks is pretty clearly saying here they filmed the whole thing themselves.
Great interview! We can’t discount the impact of the Cold War on the early space program. JFK may have been the voice of Apollo, but it all began with Eisenhower after Sputnik and then became a space race. Administrations tend not to have long term goals with terms being 4 or 8 years max. Kennedy’s goal of the end of the decade - he knew he likely wouldn’t be in office by then. As soon as we landed on the moon (and since), NASA had to fight for every other program: Skylab, ISS, Hubble etc. Even the Shuttle would be unlikely without Air Force support. Public support was also low after Apollo 11. As highlighted in Apollo 13s live TV broadcast that never went out live.
A minor correction: Coolidge was from Vermont but moved to Massachusetts and became governor of Massachusetts. He retired to Northampton, Massachusetts. My grandmother knew his wife Grace there. He is worth studying as Tom Hanks recommends.
Does Dominic have any books that aren't written by himself???
I think Tom should have a quiet word with him regarding his ruthless self promotion perhaps...
Excellent work as always boys.
Next, Tom Holland interviews Tom Holland on his experience playing the fictional treasure hunter Nathan Drake in the Uncharted movie
Great video. If Tom Hanks wants to know how AA works, I suggest he reads "Not-God" by Ernest Kurtz. 🙂
Writing The Big Book is a far better book in my opinion. But the movie that needs to be made is the Jack Alexander Saturday Evening Post AA story. That would be the coolest aa movie.
You'd have to be performing open heart surgery to be skipping this one -- and I'm not quite sure you'd get a pass if you were the one under the knife. Tremendous topic and a most wonderful guest.
Tom can you explain why they looked so somber
11:47 Sputnik was closer in size to a beach ball than a grapefruit.
Holland's JFK speech sounded more like Churchill lmao
I hate the new privatised space companies.
