Actually now it is in the 1300s' handbooks, rather than an addition to the handbook for the 1250s where BMW pay for it (equipment and labour), for the 1300s, you pay for the shaft and the labour. Mmm, Recommended for replacement. BMW say depending on what use the 1300 has performed.

I am on my third GS; a 2005 R1200GS, a 2014 R1200GS, and currently a 2022 R1250GSA. Obviously I like the boxer GS series of bikes. I keep in mind when buying a motorcycle what I want to do with the bike. What is/are the mission or missions I want the bike to perform. I got the GS's to explore North America by motorcycle and not be hesitant about leaving the pavement. I'm not doing the gnarly, technical stuff on a 540 pound bike. I have a KTM dirt bike for that. But to go out exploring whether on a local day trip or all around the continent, the GS/GSA is just wonderful. It handles well on a twisty paved highway, it's fun on dirt, gravel, primitive, or forest service roads, it's all day comfortable, and can carry everything I need. All of my GS's have been pretty reliable and have never left me stranded. There are other bikes that can do the same things, some are less expensive. I prefer the BMW. Great review by the way!
Fantastic Simon, dont mind opinions and preferences, but facts are hard to argue, and the facts on these are impressive. Combined indicator/brake /tail light is still something no one's got any creditable reason for 🤔
This was a lesson learned: this bike is right next to the Ducati v4 Multistrada Rally Adventure Travel and Radar, tech wise parallel. Making my decision even harder. Nobody tests these bikes for night riding, which many of us do all the time. How is this new lighting system for this model? Does it make it safer to ride in the dark easier and better, with the changes made? The engines technology is vastly improved, so the sound is not a concern, since the new model outperforms the older model, my primary concern is night riding, so the lights are crucial. Finally, this is not truly designed for off roading like the KTM series even the newest one 1390 is superior to these bikes, period. My choice goes between the Ducati and BMW, any ideas for a NY rider who needs to go off road for sightseeing in the mountains, where there are paths designated, of course. Thank you for this eye-opening review.
That was a hefty review for a hefty bike. If you've got the money and you need to get to Milan or Istanbul in a hurry on a regular basis, this is definitely the bike for you!
As always a great video. I've test ridden the new GSA 3 times and my impressions mirror yours except on comfort - I find the seat rock hard and really uncomfortable. other than that - it's a stunning bike.
Need to try it again but I thought the standard seat was very uncomfortable and I’m coming from a 2008 versys 650! Thanks for a detailed in depth review ! Thoroughly enjoyed!
Fantastic geekery and Simon is always great value for money. Given the basic bike with the extras everyone is going to add is at least £25K once you add luggage (essential for those Starbucks trips), it had jolly well better be good! The most illuminating part was your conversation with BMW 25 years ago. Did any biker really want their bike to resemble a car with all the car technology that exists to take drivers away from the tedium of being stuck in another traffic jam? I’ve owned a few GSes and came to find the engine very mechanically noisy, clattery and the riding experience dull. Then I woke up and realised so many other bikes out there a better for me. I guess that why so many dull people buy them - and reviewers falling over themselves to praise them just fans the flames 😂 It sells well because of the BMW marketing juggernaut, very easy PCP finance (much less likely to get refused than most other brands), the best warranty support and dealer experience and the overload of features people think they must have rather than they actually need. It is also undoubtedly a fantastic bike but it’s also pointless and unnecessary (and it is not alone). When we consider the way the biking world is going, with an ageing market, dealers across the UK in trouble, KTM in trouble and all the interest at EICMA in the smaller capacity models, and the likely longer term cost of living problems, this bike is anachronistic. I am however excited about the F450 - its looks are what the R1300 should have had and if reports are correct it’s 100Kg lighter than the GSA. And I couldn’t care less where it is assembled so long as the quality control is excellent.
Had the pleasure of riding the R1300GSA last weekend and found it good, but preferred the R1250GSA and bought it. (Plus couldn’t beat the deal that BMW was having on the R1250GSA). Funniest thing is, my local dealer has sold out of R1250GSA’s since the R1300GSA showed up at the shop. He had to order more of the R1250GSA’s to keep up with demand.
15:00 The engine ticking noise at idle is insane actually… you would think theres something wrong with it. I have a video in my channel where you can really hear it.
I've heard three of these ticking over and they've all sounded like a bag of nails. There's no excuse for this on a modern bike that costs over £20,000. 😂🤣😂
Every time I wonder which large capacity adventure bike I would buy, the biggest consideration for me is how does it compare to a 600cc super sport bike. 🙄
Whilst i enjoyed your review, the fact that you did not directly compare acceleration scenarios between the 1250gsa and the 1300 says it all for me. I suspect that if there was a difference in favour of the new bike you would have been quick to point this out.
My two biggest concerns are cost of ownership and reliability of the new tech… then again if you can afford the entry price cost if ownership is probably insignificant for the first owner. As for second owners this may prove challenging.
I’m more worried about tinnitus than the fact that the BMW R1300 engine has a different and louder sound compared to the R1250. That’s why I always use earplugs and recommend more riders do the same. Gotta protect what’s left of your hearing after years of noise! 😉
Good geeking ..but not sure the sound test at exhaust and cylinder head are relevant when your heads nearly a metre away ..I wear ear plugs and have never had an issue on my 1300GS

Hi Simon, What a great review and hope to see alot more. When I saw Trevor, I instantly thought of the late John Robinson, Gus Scott and Ronnie Smith. Sad times I know but on the occasion I met you I smiled to myself of all the antics you lot got up to and of course Trevor kindly demonstrated that at the end of the weigh in.😂👍
I have a 2002 Yamaha Fazer 1000 and oddly, I spend a lot of time on that worrying about all the old stuff (like clutch, camchain, carbs) that might go wrong. Nothing ever does, but I still worry.
Enjoyed the review, but feel sad that these behemoths have become so popular. To me they are the antithesis of motorcycling with their physical bulk, heavy weight and ever larger engines adding more weight still. I guess I’m a keep it light, keep it simple type. Still it’s good to have the choice and each to their own.
The big take - TS50ER, 30mph. Scoff. Early 80s I had the TS250ER and that could do OVER 60mph. Just about. After a while. Good format though, these geek tests
A beautiful motorcycle is an oxymoron. This 1300gsa in 2 years will be the icon that every Beemer fan wants. Automatic motorcycle transmissions will be prevalent.
You give all the specs you want and they mean nothing! Most Customers do not buy things based on just the specs, they buy things with their Heart first. Where this bike failed miserably is just that. It speaks to no one's Heart! It is as heartless as an old IBM Computer from the 80s.

See how this reviewer works professionally and isn't somebody that has some spare time and wants to foist their persona onto you. Sure he's a Bass guitar player but we can't hold that against him. Did you mention the rivals 🤔….. Good report, and if I was going to ride extreme distance I’d go for one, but it’s so much money and of late a bit of a thief magnet / expensive to insure…..it’s got everything though / and it handles 👍
Did you pay the £25k + this costs out of your pocket??? Be realistic, does a motorcycle actually need all this to be fun? Then we wonder why young people are not getting into motorcycles, really you journalists have to put your customer hat on as well when you do these reviews
Agreed, and we do review plenty of bikes of all prices too. I, like you might not spend that kind of money on a new GSA but there are plenty of people who do. The GSA (and the standard GS) have been the best selling new bikes in most European countries for the last ten years.
@ they are, I have had a 2017 1200GS as well as a 1996 1100RT, 2006 1200RT, 2011 R1200RT, 2014 1200RT , so know the marque well, the salesman pretty much knows how much is in the customers bank account & how much they earn before the customer does! Very slick at tucking the customer up with everything they don’t need and some on a PCP (I’ve been there🤦♂️) which leaves the buyer with no bike in 3 years and little value for a future deposit, this business model became so apparent once the 1200 models appeared
I think the looks grow on you and it doesn’t look bad in real life, my biggest problem is it’s a BIG bike, only having a 28 inside leg it’s to tall and heavy for me but I do like the R12 ninety 😁
Completely disagree. I went from thinking the same six months ago, now i feel it makes the 1250 look old. I love the new design, especially in Trophy. But to each their own
It is a shame that you present so many times BMW 1300 all the bells and stupid staff and you do not mention that there is not automatic or even semi auto gears. That's the most important lack of the catalogue 😂
@boleneger Maybe not exactly the same system, and I think it's a small minority of potential buyers who are looking at that particular feature as a deciding factor. Time will tell.
2033 and the GSA, still voted the ugliest bike ever designed. Thank you BMW, for the saving as my 2022 1250 would be with me for the foreseeable future.
I can't believe they have made the 13GSA heavier yes heavier I have waited for this bike assuming there would be a weight saving along the same lines at the 13 gs 😡
Test ride it. You'll be amazed. It's a big step forward in every single aspect. Don't know why but it clearly feels better accomplished than standard 1300GS. Specially the handling, believe me or not.
Oh dear, you really haven’t got a clue, have you? We do not rely on advertising which is why we can remain independent and credible. Did we attend the world launch? No. We chose to review the bike in the UK using our own methods, measurements and selection of roads… that’s the entire point of the Geek Test. So while we also pride ourselves on having good working relationships with the manufacturers, we are certainly not in anyone's pocket. You’re welcome to take your negativity and spite elsewhere.
I would argue they have a good relationship with BMW in that they are able to get lots of there bikes, but most of all they are able to be honest about their products. If I'm right in saying their conclusion on the "standard" r1300gs was if you have a 1250 keep it 😆

Fantastic job guys 👌
And.... the gushing continues.....
Have you considered the fact that it might actually be a really good bike?
There are many good bikes out there. Sorry but this hurts.
@@bennettsbikesocial I didn't say it wasn't. I was referring to the gushing review. It must be the most perfect bike ever made and worth every penny.
Best review of the 1300GSA ever! Thank you 🙏 I have ridden the 1300GS and really like on trips especially mountain roads with twistees. Though I feel the Ducati V4S has made me appreciate the difference in sportiness one can experience. But when I travel I fall back on the 1300GS. I guess GSA on my next trip ✌️
Wow.what a break down.the elephant in the room ,not on the back of the bike,is price.christ its expensive.but thanks for taking all the time to put a test together Simon and Michael.the most comprehensive review yet,and i watched loads of them.great work
Thinner, lighter engine cases equals slightly more noise.
😅🤣😂
I used to ride the GS 80
Hi Simon, What a great review and hope to see alot more. When I saw Trevor, I instantly thought of the late John Robinson, Gus Scott and Ronnie Smith. Sad times I know but on the occasion I met you I smiled to myself of all the antics you lot got up to and of course Trevor kindly demonstrated that at the end of the weigh in.😂👍
Funny that you totally went off the cliff with the sound clips, but then forget to ''geek'' out on the ASA....
Lots of new stuff to go wrong !! I'll keep my 20001 honda XRV750 lol
I have a 2002 Yamaha Fazer 1000 and oddly, I spend a lot of time on that worrying about all the old stuff (like clutch, camchain, carbs) that might go wrong. Nothing ever does, but I still worry.
Gus has a bike from the future! Did Doc Brown bring it back?!
One question, please. We're both bikes running the same tyres.
Hi, no they weren't. The 1250 was on Bridgestone Battlax A41 and the 1300 wore a set of Michelin Anakee Adventure.
Great and comprehensive.
But way too much drinking vouchers.
How many bikes can i buy for 25 bags?
Onwards.
Ride safe 👍
Enjoyed the review, but feel sad that these behemoths have become so popular. To me they are the antithesis of motorcycling with their physical bulk, heavy weight and ever larger engines adding more weight still. I guess I’m a keep it light, keep it simple type. Still it’s good to have the choice and each to their own.
Great video I love the Geek tests and this BMW R1300GS A and the R 1300 GS are surley 2 ofthe best Bikes ever
Great video guys, professional and no rubbish
Thank goodness for Honda and the £8999 Hornet 1000.
Get the SP. it will be worth the upgrade.
Automatic motorcycle transmissions will be prevalent.
thank Ewan McGregor and Charlie Bormann for massive increase in GS sales .😂😂well done KTM
Hi, how tall is Mr. Simon?
He's a 6 footer. Or 1.83m in metric.
You give all the specs you want and they mean nothing! Most Customers do not buy things based on just the specs, they buy things with their Heart first. Where this bike failed miserably is just that. It speaks to no one's Heart! It is as heartless as an old IBM Computer from the 80s.
Epic review. Amen.
A note for UA-cam reviewers ; See the lack of cut edits because you can't string a sentence together. See how this reviewer works professionally and isn't somebody that has some spare time and wants to foist their persona onto you. Sure he's a Bass guitar player but we can't hold that against him.
A FECtastic review of the German tractor.
Not interested in gs1300a
But bloody love Simon
👌
The best bike ever..looks excellent!
Evolution of a great machine fantastic geekery as well.
Thr price is aspirational.. so these will all be leased and not bought. Motorcycle ownership isn't a thing now.
Please, take a breath now and then.
I think the looks grow on you and it doesn’t look bad in real life, my biggest problem is it’s a BIG bike, only having a 28 inside leg it’s to tall and heavy for me but I do like the R12 ninety 😁
283kg.
Gulp.
All the designers over at BMW who worked on this bike should be fired immediately! It is hideous! It's the Worst looking bike I've ever seen.
so hideous that it's the current top seller in the alps. They will never fire winners.
@AB-kc3hg Put the crack pipe down son you're delusional.
Completely disagree. I went from thinking the same six months ago, now i feel it makes the 1250 look old. I love the new design, especially in Trophy. But to each their own
I like it. Especially the triple black.
yes it's shit but these boomers will buy it because they already lost their good taste for design LONG AGO
Cheeky clip of the coffee cup. lol
Looks like its had a few too many pies then. Lol
For some reason the design reminds me of an electric shaver.
What is this design man my goddd old one is much better
It is a shame that you present so many times BMW 1300 all the bells and stupid staff and you do not mention that there is not automatic or even semi auto gears. That's the most important lack of the catalogue 😂
You meen ASA?
Does the GSA not have ASA?
You shouldn’t call the staff stupid.
@@bikegeist Not DTC or other automatic gear selection and for sure more expensive than other similar systems.
@boleneger Maybe not exactly the same system, and I think it's a small minority of potential buyers who are looking at that particular feature as a deciding factor. Time will tell.
Simon, this video is going to cost me a LOT of money. I now officially hate you. 😎🏴
Starbucks for sucks fake 🤢 🤢
2033 and the GSA, still voted the ugliest bike ever designed. Thank you BMW, for the saving as my 2022 1250 would be with me for the foreseeable future.
The 1300 GSA is all dressed up, but you can dress up a pig and it’s still a pig. The thing looks horrible. I don’t even know how to explain it.
I can't believe they have made the 13GSA heavier yes heavier
I have waited for this bike assuming there would be a weight saving along the same lines at the 13 gs 😡
Test ride it. You'll be amazed. It's a big step forward in every single aspect. Don't know why but it clearly feels better accomplished than standard 1300GS. Specially the handling, believe me or not.
Thanks for your reply
I'm going to go for the 13 GS with the sports longer travel suspension 😮
No need to watch this everyone. Bennett’s and B.M.W are hand in glove with each other. It really is so obvious to anyone with half a thought.
If I'm right in saying their conclusion on the "standard" r1300gs was if you have a 1250 keep it 😆
OK Paul, oh wise and learned teacher! Please keep everyone informed of the content of which you approve. After all the rest of us are but human sheep, utterly incapable of mustering the half thought mentioned in order to form our own opinions. We're so lucky you're here.
The Oracle has spoken..what a clown
