Love watching the ppl flying and exam prep videos. Im currently serving in the submarine service but recently taken keen interest into flying. Hoping to get the ppl ball rolling soon as covid lockdown lifts. Looking to train at aeros cardiff
I love those simulated radio frequency selectors. I'd like to make something similar for our gliding club's simulator, and likewise a transponder controller.
Watching this years later but great video! Approaching my 4/5 lesson in a microlight and already been asked to do radio check and taxi to apron calls. Slightly anxious about radio but just trying to gather as much information as I can. Your video is helping slot though! 👍
Stopped painting to watch this . Awesome stuff Jimbo wish I could afford to do this . Brilliant video and appreciate the efforts that goes into them . Taking my dad to DAKS next month and also a day out at terminal 5 he wants to see the A380’s come in . Funny hearing you saying Watisham my mums bathroom window overlooks the airfield and my brother shoots there . Small world
I have done some nice trips over the years with Steve, generally when my flying needs a bit of sharpening up. Actually flying with him again in the near future when he will be riding shotgun! You won't find better.
10:10 having spent many hours poring over CAP 413, pretty sure the correct call is "Classicwings Two Zero, roger"? It annoyed me because in every other instance in CAP 413 when you respond to a call, you end your transmission with your callsign. Just the other way round when the message is "Roger" or "Wilco".
James, I got my ticket for DAKS and a car pass , but is that access to the airfield itself or is that parking on a field nearby ??? My dad walks with a stick and i want to make sure I can park in Duxford itself even if I have to pay extra
I think it’s so a FISO in a situation where they miss the start of the message, they at least can hear who sent it...that’s why we end with our callsign, not just a ‘roger’ or summink 😎
If you dig into CAP 413, the UK flight radiotelephony manual, appendix 1 states we do use "OUT" to end a conversation on the ICAO standard (which is for the receiving station to transmit their own callsign). It then states that "OUT" is usually omitted as it's usually redundant.
I’m booked to sit the RTF practical in two weeks so watching your video is very timely!! Many thanks for posting.
Glad it helped you out!
That was absolutely wonderful James. Thank you so much for sharing all this.
Great presentation. This is the only video I could find on the RT practical. Certainly helped when I did mine.

Hope you all enjoyed and learned a bit about this part of the PPl process...
Binge watching your channel's. You're a star mate.
Hi James
Where did you take your final RT exam? Did you do it with Steve after this practice session or else where in east anglia?
That was at Clacton. Was great fun!
James, you are a man of many talents! Keep up the great variety and the interesting videos!
Regards,
DC
Thanks Dan! Glad you liked it mate!
Thanks for this - got my exam this morning and a good brush up to set expectations - fingers crossed :)
Your videos are really up there appreciate the help!
Hunain T cheers dude! Please sub!

Thanks Gixer. Another interesting Wattisham fact is that they all go up the pub and shut the radios off after 4pm!
Funny, after watching how to sort my heating out, I end up discovering someone else who has a passion for aviation!
Haha! Great to hear. Nearly finished my training now. There will be more videos on flying soon!

This is all very useful stuff - thanks
I was just browsing ppl videos and then I'm like wait isn't that the plumbing guy??
It’s a shame I can’t hear the chap replying to you as I’m learning the other side (air ground radio) 😬
Much respect to you, would have loved to get my ppl, but unfortunately medical wouldn't allow, have enjoyed your journey
Thanks dude. Not quite there yet...but hopefully soon!
Contact details of Steve Wilkes would be appreciated. Thanks
How were you allowed to do your solo cross country before you took your radiotelephony exam. I was told you had to pass that before any solo flying.
You just need to pass Air Law Theory exam before flying solo

The idea of talking to ATC makes me anxious. What if I don’t understand why they’re saying, and I keep asking them to repeat it again 😣
Can you use a calculator of e6b while taking practical test for cross country or anything relating to inside flying in the cockpit with the examiner?

Good stuff James 👍🏻
Thanks Paul!
You are a legend
Why thank you! 😂
I am doing my RT today and your video cleared up so many things 🤝🌠
Nice work! What's your plan once you get your PPL? Hire a plane and travel about the UK? :)
Yep! Plus I have clients all over the country so going for meetings will be much easier!
What is the charge for a day training?
Ahhh just got it thanks.
why no "Over" or "Out" protocol to end radio broadcasts?
I think it’s so a FISO in a situation where they miss the start of the message, they at least can hear who sent it...that’s why we end with our callsign, not just a ‘roger’ or summink 😎
Over and out is normally used with HF radio to signify the end of a conversation! as with HF Radio over long distances the reception is very poor!

Was a bit more simple when I did it far too many years ago! Good memory jog though.
Haha! No worries Geof!
👍🏼
Thanks!
Didn't know Bradley Cooper was blonde and British 😂 but fr, thanks, man.
I’m sure this guy got a massive bollocking from the course producer for videoing this.
Hang on
Your a plumber ffs😂
I believe you was not allowed as you commented in your video to film yet you did....just to make your self you tube famous.....tutt Tutt..
