- In this bodywork how-to we will be using Hammer and Dolly to perform dent removal. Metal working is a crucial part of the restoration body work process. Travis will be discussing what goes into getting a panel straight (sheet metal repair & dent repair) prior to applying filler. Found your channel a couple of months ago and love the content. As usual another great video with clear explanation. As you mentioned I’ve been doing the hammer off dolly method on those low spots and just keep chasing highs and lows around the panel. My next project is 72 GMC pickup bedsides, giant panels that shows every minor imperfection. I can’t wait to try the method you’ve shown here. Looking forward to the next video in the series!

So glad you are covering this. I have a 66 F100 roof with 1/4" filler all over that I'm in the process of removing. The whole roof is oil canning, and cut up from 25 year old resto previous owner did. I think someone was jumping on this roof and caved it in. I'm hoping to salvage this roof as I can't find a replacement panel and used ones are pretty expensive. Can't wait for the next video! Great job!

This definitely a keeper to my private files I named “Moving Metal by Mr. T” I just wanted UA-cam 46 years ago for use in the counties black & white Beta-Max, the refrigerator sized machine to play it in! @@Squintanditsmint I feel it is because he has not described it in detail on how it actually works that is my goal to show the things that people don’t quite nail down I almost guarantee you will be a believer once we do these next couple videos. We have a couple different hoods we have to fix for different cars and we’re basically going to do a series with each one on how we address the damage and how we fix them in detail

Great information. Any tips for working on a door panel where the internal crash beam (1970 GM 'A' body) prevents use of the dolly?
Depending on the damage if it’s bad enough we remove door skins and put them back on after repairing them

I love your vids dude. Yknow ehat ive been missing tho is someone who can explain as good as you about profile sanding and sanding body lines. Over here ee usually tape over that and sand it after bodyworking the bigger part of the panel, but there must be a better way. Flexible dollies? Idk. Anyway congrats on all the good work.

This is great what if you can’t use a dolly any tips with a stud gun ?
Just depends on what your trying to achieve we will remove panels and fix areas and put them back on. However you can use a stud gun if you wish
Love the videos - question i have a crease in-between the trunk and door cant reach the inside ive seen videos where holes are drilled and crease is pulled out but that aint exciting me any thoughts?
Without seeing pictures it’s hard to gauge what exactly you’re trying to do. I’m not sure if you are on Instagram but if you are feel free to send some pictures
For welded seams for patch panels, you can get valleys on both sides of the weld. What method is best once you get the weld ground smooth?
Funny you ask we have a video we just filmed on this very issue. Once we get the editing done it will get posted. You hammer and dolly on the weld to stretch it out and up
@@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS Thanks. What I’m getting is low spots on both sides of my seam from shrinkage. I was careful with heat, but it still happened. My weld seems even with the main surface, but just has valleys along both sides of it. Maybe I’m not being aggressive enough, but hammering the welds directly on a dolly hasn’t seemed to bring the valleys up. I was thinking my backside penetration needed ground down as it’s bumpy on the back. Trying to avoid filler. Thanks.
What are your thoughts (or Ken's) on using a shaper spoon instead of a hammer in this situation? I see Wray Schelin (Pro Shaper) uses that frequently.

When you belt sand the edge of your circular hammer's head, how far proud of the edge is the center of your hammer when you have it just right?
If I remember correctly it’s a #6 radius guage
I’m working on the front curve of a square body hood. Problem is you can’t get to the back side to work the dolly . I hate working on hoods such a huge flat area. I’ve been tack welding 1/8” steel rod with mig and pulling the lows up by them .
Sometimes you have to remove the inner structure then repair it and put it back together
Question do i have to lead the rear qtr on my nova? Can i tack and short hair it on epoxy or right to metal? It has brass holding it together now. Tacked.
I personally don’t like the fiberglass filler. I either lead them or make a piece of metal to weld in and make flush

Yes if you are trying to move metal instead stretching it or shrinking it.
Great info. I have always gotten it close and finished with filler but after watching your video I am trying to finish it perfect. I too have been doing it wrong for a long time. I had a question on the technique for removing the dent. If hammer on dolly stretches metal and hammer off shrinks it how is using hammer on dolly removing the dent? I tried your technique and it definitely works which was really cool. But I can’t wrap my mind around why if the dolly on the backside and I’m hammering on dolly why it’s not making the dent stretch and get worse. Instead it’s bringing the dent back up which means it’s shrinking the stretched metal right? I hope my question makes sense.
Thank you. Hammer off dolly does not shrink it. It only moves metal around. The only way cold shrinking works is where hammer on dolly is pushing the high spot of metal in on itself. Once you start to hear the loud ting noise you are no longer shrinking you are stretching. I hope that makes sense. Maybe watch it again if it doesn’t make sense let me know.

That’s because there’s no money in collision repair and it’s easily accessible to get aftermarket panels versus older cars that you don’t have that option
