You did a beautiful job making the squares. I'm familiar with the book. The reason there was less knitting is because it was considered more for everyday use. Servants and children knitted. Crochet, needlepoint, embroidery and lace making were more to show off a lady's skill. DMC threads have been around since the 1700's and are still considered the finest threads you can use.

It is so beautiful! I want to make a bigger copy of it for my bed, but it's going to have to wait until I get better at crocheting. I only just started crocheting last week. I finished my first project and am working on a scarf now for my husband's birthday.
Please leave up the video for a long time because it's going to take me awhile to get to the point where I am able to make this blanket. It really is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.

I've had this book for over 40 years, and I'vemade quite a lot from it. Crochet Lace Diamond Design (Fig.542, p.310 in my edition) in size 30 crochet cotton, ecru, sewn onto a dark red velvet cushion was one of my mother's favorites of a series of crochet cushions I made for her. I practiced with several of the simpler drawn thread work patterns from the Openwork on Linen chapter (Figs.777-812) on a set of dishtowels, using embroidery floss. A monogram for a shirt. A sachet embroidered with the Assisi work "apocryphal beast" (Fig.232). The list goes on and on-40+ years, remember!
Now I want to give that border a try. After all, I managed to decipher the Fig.433 sock0 heel worked entirely in plain knitting.

The border adaptation looks lovely and is a good example of trust the process and your gut when doing crocheting.

Fancy! I like both versions. I think you’re keeping in line with the Victorians in that personal variations would have been the norm. It was the setting down in written patterns that was new. Nicely innovated. 🦋

Your interpretation turned out beautifully, I will have to get yet another book😂 I bought the Mrs. Beeton one & discovered your stacked single was an alternative chain stitch, there was 3 in the book. It shows a few stitches I’ve never seen that must have been forgotten in the annals of time, this book looks just as interesting. 👏👏❤️❤️🇬🇧

Corinna, I have a lot of old needlework magazines from the1800s and early 1900s which have knitting and crocheting patterns in them. My dream was to work them out and make them, but I have never been able to figure them out. They are mostly "The Modern Priscilla" and "Needlework Magazine." If you want some of them, and your p.o. box can take packages, let me know. I will make arrangements. It would be fun to crochet one of those old patterns I picked up along with you.

Hmmm...I'm going to try using that original stitch (sc2tog ch2) to make a light weight pullover sweater/jumper out of a long rectangle with a neck hole in the middle of it for a two year old grandbaby. Like you, I am a bit disappointed that we couldn't figure out the fan work all around the border but I definitely think that you pulled a save out of the yarn skein with what you came up with to use in lieu of it when you couldn't. Looks very snuggly and cuddly and definitely original. 👍

I think alternate pattern is absolutely beautiful. These old patterns weren’t tested like patterns are today and like you always say back then you just knew what to do. A lot was passed down through generations. Sort of like recipes, a dash of this and a handful of that.
Also, as a collector of many vintage quilts and afghans I can tell you artistic liberties were heavily relied upon throughout history.
    ❤Beautiful work as always ❤

That original stitch is so interesting! I’ll definitely have to make a little swatch of this at some point (maybe a baby blanket, maybe a wall hanging, maybe a tote bag would be cute)
Edit: after googling the book and author (encyclopedia of needlework Therese De Dillmont), if you are willing to use the online version it’s free in a couple different places!

This outer stitch looks looks great. In fact I love the whole whole blanket. The only otherblanket I made aside from crib sizes was a larger than queen size granny square blanket way back in the 1980's I think. Most of the patterns I got when I was heavy into crochet were clothes and things.

Try marking the stitch (not the working loop) that's formed by the 'pull through one' - that's the stitch you work into. The 'pull through one' is what would be your turning chain in normal crochet. In fact, if you examine what you are doing when you 'pull through one' you will see that you are simply chaining one. So what you are doing is pulling up your final loop of the row in your previous turning chain, making one turning chain (or reversing😂, in this case), then working off two loops at a time.

'Princess Royal' is the title of the eldest daughter of a British monarch. The title is held for life (or theoretically until they ascend the throne). There's only ever one Princess Royal at a time. Princess Anne became Princess Royal under her mother Queen Elizabeth II, and will remain so until her death.
In the 1800s the Princess Royal would have been Princess Victoria, daughter of Queen Victoria

I love this pattern. The Tunisian stitch is also my favorite. I'm so glad you gave the tidbits on what not to do while doing this stitch. I started a blanket and had that issue of it leaning to the right. And the loose edges. Thank you for those little bits. Now, I can restart that blanket.

perhaps when counting your stitches find the middle stitch on each side, count either side how many stitches you need to make the scallop..from there, find the middle stitch either side and again count the required stitches either side to make the scallop..then choose to fill in the gaps with whatever, like smaller sections of the pattern you did in the blue..finding the middle stitch in each section should then give you the desired pattern..and if the sections in between are not enough, then make a smaller version of the scallops in between..

I have times when I just cannot understand a pattern so I change it or I ask a friend that crochets to look at it and explain it to me. Mostly it's just me not getting it.
