I don't think I agree that in Izzet the blue and red sides are always in opposition. One of the most classic Izzet archetypes, the mad scientist, is a perfect example of that. The mad scientist seeks progress guided by impulse. They seeks to innovate for the sake of seeing if they can, throwing caution to the wind and building something just because they think they're able to. They achieve red goals via blue means, creating to sate their impulses, and blue goals through red means, making it up as they go along, not stopping to plan or take safety precautions. As someone who considers myself to be that particular pairing, while my impulsiveness and inventivness can definitely clash, I honestly find that more often than not, one is guided by the other. My impulsiveness urging me to put the ideas I come up with into practice, or my inventiveness figuring out the best way to sate my impulses.
Me personally I also think that the Dimir characterization was a little off the mark. For all the tricks gags and sideshows that we see with dimir’s characterization it’s a lot simpler than most people realize. Dimir can be some grand reality denying and defining schemer but it’s just as easily a TV trope as all the two color combos. I see Dimir as a cynic. They aren’t going to conquer the universe but if they get to where they need by telling you that they are, it’s hardly out of the cards(pun intended). Ambition can be a great mover of the pieces but at the end of the day it’s the innate knowledge of a grandmaster that puts your opponent into checkmate:
Yep, they oppose no differently than other enemy pairs, logic & passion though opposites in a vacuum merged by your observed "passionate science", Izzet utilising Blue's love of progression to the point of destroying districts vs og Rakdos' pandemonium or Blue/Black's amoral science. Ie "oo..adding all they chemicals together time! Oops I blew up district 7,time to flee from the Boros/Azorius, etc!" vs cold scientific progress.
"Truth cannot be broken through questioning. It can only be reinforced if it is indeed TRUTH" (48:01) Damn that's actually a really powerful statement. Personally, I must say that I really vibe with Simic, though, when playing, I generally gravitate toward a white/black deck.

Boy, I struggled to grasp what a positive representation of Rakdos would look like, and then while watching this I realized a recent blockbuster movie had a perfect depiction ready to show off. That character is Hobie Brown from Across the Spiderverse. He categorically rejects any structure or organization that might limit him, he argues about how he is just to avoid being pigeonholed, but he still pursues what he believes is right, that just happens to be self-determination and autonomy instead of preserving the presumed necessary order the rest of the spider squad represent without hesitation. Hobie rejects Miguel's rules, he openly refuses to engage with the bureaucracy, and he incites chaos just because he doesn't believe stories are immutable and have to play out a certain way. And if that's not Rakdos I don't know what is
This illustrates why I don’t tend to use the guild names and the color combinations interchangeably. Hobie is definitely Red/Black, but he’d never get along with Rakdos. There’s no positive representation of Rakdos, because it’s a negative representation of R/B.

I feel like there's some bias in some of these descriptions, because while Simic and Golgari are described as being able to reach an equilibrium, Orzhov and Izzet are described as being eternally at-odds, as though the inverse can't be true. A Simic person may forever grapple with the question whether they are more Nature or Nurture; while an Orzhov person may reach a state of philosophical harmony by idealizing a universal hedonism that would strive to see everything being given to everyone. On the other hand, functional imbalance between colors is also a valid interpretation of someone using the means of one color to achieve the ends of another. As great as this video is (and it IS great), I feel like it's not actually as comprehensive as one might walk away feeling, given its length.
Simic & Golgari are Green at heart but differ by non warring goals. Ie progress of nature by science to the point of bidding wars from others guilds to buy their new biological weapons vs growing the unwanted species of Ravmica by natural death down in the sewers ala Golgari. Whilst white/black may see your comment’s assertion of "universal hedonism", Orzhov Syndicate(aka purposely false religion)are concerned only with power by oppression to the point of paranoia of Izzet's inventions by pointlessly employing Dimir to spy & uncover Niv Mizzet's end goal. Hedonism the perview of Rakdos, Orzhov prefering self satisfaction in life & ghostly undeath hence their obese ghosts as former leaders.
This could have easily been a series, by color with the amount of effort put it, a shame because many people will skip this video due to it's length but if you split them up into multiple videos it could help get views. Either way this is amazing. I felt like i was being psychologically profiled myself through my favorite color combinations. Awesome video!
This was a series, it's just once I finished it I put them all together to make this one long one. So if you're ever wanting to just watch one you should be able to find it by searching the pairs name 😊
@@DiceTryI just seen that actually haha, felt silly for the comment 😅 Subbed though, this is quality, you're like the vaati viidya of magic the gathering haha
First off, incredible video. Love the Rakdos interpretation. I also feel like Dimir has a strong emphasis on forbidden and esoteric knowledge, as well as 'unknowable' maddening eldritch knowledge.
Myself, as a person, resonates with Selesnya. Your characterizations of G/W reallly felt like you were talking about who I try to be to the people around me. My favorite edh deck is Trostani. It's interesting that the playstyle I gravitate towards is Rakdos or Gruul, though. As a player, I am much more aggressive and focus on gaining strength and wagering position in games, so B/R and G/R are perfect colors for me to build in, often resulting in my most powerful decks.
I mostly fall into the ideaologies of both Simic; Constantly evolving the base that we work upon to make things better than they already were, and Dimir; Eternally improving upon one self and never satisfied. Fitting, as my favorite decks to play are Sultai - Blue, Black and Green, all in unison. Even my favorite CEDH deck is, quite literally, a Food Chain deck.
Look, this is an amazing (series of) video(s), but I came here for an introduction to the colours of Magic and not a deeply moving psychoanalytic call-out. Apparently I don't need therapy, I just need to master playing Izzet to win at life. ...Not complaining though. (Sarcasm aside, this is really, really good and makes the game so much more three-dimensional and appealing to a newbie such as I. I can't imagine the work that went into this, thank you!)
You had me going on a rollercoaster with this comment, but I appreciate it. That's sort of the theme of this channel, thinking way too deeply into Magic: the gathering.
@@DiceTry Rollercoaster of emotions while hitting the point with analysis? Sounds like Izzet to me. 🤭 But I'm glad I got the meaning across. Really great work on these videos!
Im a Selesnyan to my heart, but i really need some time to think how could i help. Also i asked myself "Why does everyone lefts things like selesnya at last?" and instantly replied myself "Well... Because we can wait for everyone else to go first"
Selesnya are the patient cult, Rakdos go whenever they wish, Ozhov insist on being first & Azorius technically a cult to absolute law vs specific being.
It is interesting how effectively the descriptions of these combinations align both my in game preferences and playstyles and certain aspects of my personality and mental health. Personally, my heart belongs to the Grixis combination (heart, will and mind) and its combinations within, as well as their respective enemy pairings. Also, because of that, Rakdos has always been a favorite and the description here as more than just unbridled anarchy is appreciated. Rakdos is freedom to live life unfettered and when you are certain kinds of people, that resonates deeply.
21:30 logic/emotion in Izzet part reminds me of Lawyer Barbie from the Barbie Movie: “This makes me emotional and I’m expressing it. I have no difficulty holding both logic and emotion at the same time, and it does not diminish my powers. It expands them.” (It’s a cool line but it’s also played for laughs.)
Wow, so far, Izzit (blue/red) seems to resonate best with me. It describes, very thoroughly describes the experience of being both ADHD and Autistic. It's a dance of contradictions. My ADHD craves stimulation and novelty and excitement. But meanwhile, my Autism is deeply uncomfortable by _all_ those things, instead wanting routine, consistency, and predictability. I live my life by a very deep, complex logical code; but at the same time, while I rarely show them externally, on the inside I still feel emotions all the same, just kept well in check by that logical network. It's like a volcanic hotspot under a glacier; roiling, bubbling, and could explode given the right circumstances, but covered by a thick sheet of ice so no one else would even realize it's down there (until it's too late).
Looks like Simic (blue/green) best represents my views on spirituality and the fundamental nature of reality. I value our ability to study, measure, and understand through science and I don't reject the concepts of science and discovery. But, at the same time, I don't hold to the idea that if it hasn't been, or fundamentally can't be, studied by science, then it simply can't and doesn't exist. I don't reject the possibility of a spiritual aspect to the universe just on the basis of "it hasn't been observed" or even by "it can't be measured" or "it's unfalsifyable". All that means it that it isn't something that can be studied by scientific inquiry, but that doesn't prove that it's unreal. After all, I exist and I can indubitably prove that but only to myself; from the perspective of science it's just as unfalsifyable.
I watched this whole video trying to decide which colors fit me as a person, starting with just the certainty that white was the biggest one Came away with the certainty i was white green blue Probably could have saved some brainpower by assuming ally colors first
So you're all about that Bant, 'bout that Bant... No Rakdos! You're all about that Bant, 'bout that Bant... No Rakdos! You're all about that Bant, ' bout that Bant... No Rakdos! Sorry... *giggle*
Izzet philosofy, to me, incapsulates what is to be a true martial artist. The sharpening of tecnique to try to achive perfection, and the use of emotion to understand the flow of a fight.
I know im a little late to teh party but on izzit i always thought it as a balance between creativity and logic and to balance both you get creative intelligence that invents and experiments using both logic and impulse
My subconscious personality resonates with Azorius, my ego resonates with Boros makes sense. every deck i enjoy playing is either Azorius or Jeskai I enjoy building decks that are both unique and efficient. I don't care about winning and I don't care about how impactful the cards I use are. I just want the deck to be efficient and unique, and that's how I like to live my life. with efficiency and on my own terms
what annoys me is that the themes of Boros really resonates with me, however I couldn't find any commander that I find fun playing. I liked either aggressive or value type deck, which is why my two main decks are Dimir Zombies and Mono red Goblins. I'm not a big fan of equipments as well so I've been yarning for it, though I may try human tribals
The color that resonates most with me as a person is white, potentially my least favorite color to play Whereas the color i find most fun to play, black, resonates with me the least I think theres an interest in the self opposite that impacts whether you like playing your own colors, and a distaste for playing your own colors cuz you see yourself
Try dicetry’s color quiz I take it every 6 months for keeping up with myself and it really helps to know what colors to focus on, it has increased both my win rate as well as my enjoyment of the game
Try Otharri She's the boros sunbird rebel-allied card. Probably not cEDH worthy, but tack in that, with a few "Fight multiple times" cards, and some token generation, and Otharri is a value engine.
IZZET TLDR Sees a situation Makes a calculated risk Yeet the situation into the wind Learn from the situation Repeat the process with slight adjustments to see if anything new is learned from slightest change Try not to die
It explains why im so drawn to golgari cause i do truly respect life and death and i find both equally beautiful, how ever i do think that everyone and everything has a purpose in this world like what green thinks
Always stoked to see another binge video! However, something’s gnawing at me about the organization of each segment. It feels random, somehow. Were I to have organized it, I would have done it in one of three ways: 1. In order of standalone video release, with the explanation provided at the beginning of the Orzhov video. 2. In Alphabetical Order according to assigned Ravnican name. 3. In order of the Color Pie (WU, WB, UB, UR, BR, BG, RG, RW, GW, GU).
My theory is he just didn’t want to do any color twice in a row. But tbh I was really thrown off when he did four enemy pairs and then went to allies 😵💫🤬🤣
I know it's a joke set, but is there any chance of an analysis of the color pairs in Unstable in a similar manner to the Strixhaven video? I find the concepts behind the unguilds intriguing, especially how Crossbreed Labs is similar, yet vastly different compared to Simic.
Actually I do not, funny enough, nearly the opposite. If we are looking at the duo color I resonate with, this is even more true. I resonate more with Izzet or Temur, but play more often in Jund and Abzan. So you can tell, I tend to have a splash of Golgari in my decks. I have tried some Izzet decks and even made some, but I gravitate towards what I mentioned.
Kind of. I'm an Izzet/Temur person, but most of the decks I make and enjoy playing are Dimir. Blue is always a strong influence in me, but I change my mindset when I'm striving for a goal.
honestly, different pairs represent me based on context, but the commonality is that they all include black. Black and blue because i prioritize practicality and realism over morality, and value self improvement more than the improvement of others. black and green because i dont believe everyone has a pre established place, but i believe in recognizing your own limitations while being your own person and striving for improvement. Black and white because i believe we need order, but that order shouldnt constantly impose itself. people shpuld be free to do as they want, so long as it doesnt directly impact others.
It seems a little random, but I wanted to make sure no one color was talked about twice in a row. So I started with GB I believe so the next part I didn't want it to use either Green or Black, and I sort of did that pattern until I had them all
Just a little idea: Golgari, which comprise of green and black, finds itself ever-questioning both destiny and self determination - paving your own path. The Matrix movies, which are dealing with the same dilema, also share aesthetics of green and black. Coincidence?
I just recently opened my cards. Tutors and and Duals and Uzras. You all are lost. I thought I was confused. Golgari. IT'S SWAMPS AND FORESTS! Moss and zombies and trees and death and growth.
so green and black, For me, it's not as simple as we live for fate or that fate lives for us. we all live to each other. some moments have to happen. others do not
You're in luck I have covered every shard and wedge, you can check out the marathon video I did for those combinations here: ua-cam.com/video/I4UsCRjJi5w/v-deo.html

@@DiceTryI just seen that actually haha, felt silly for the comment 😅
Subbed though, this is quality, you're like the vaati viidya of magic the gathering haha
@Invert-Y oh no worries, you are right it would make a good series
First off, incredible video. Love the Rakdos interpretation.
I also feel like Dimir has a strong emphasis on forbidden and esoteric knowledge, as well as 'unknowable' maddening eldritch knowledge.
Wow, I'll be watching this again... and probably again...
Myself, as a person, resonates with Selesnya. Your characterizations of G/W reallly felt like you were talking about who I try to be to the people around me. My favorite edh deck is Trostani. It's interesting that the playstyle I gravitate towards is Rakdos or Gruul, though. As a player, I am much more aggressive and focus on gaining strength and wagering position in games, so B/R and G/R are perfect colors for me to build in, often resulting in my most powerful decks.
interesting how you described my internal struggles almost perfectly when you were talking about my favourite color combo - golgari
Nicely done! I love magic the gathering. Greatest card game ever.
Same here
Look, this is an amazing (series of) video(s), but I came here for an introduction to the colours of Magic and not a deeply moving psychoanalytic call-out.
Funny, I heavily relate to Selesnya, and I almost entirely play Selesnya decks. Great video!
This is better than most movies and documentaries. Holy shit
This is amazing. Now do the 3-colors
You're in luck because I have! ua-cam.com/video/I4UsCRjJi5w/v-deo.htmlsi=8dWG327ZDu07Q9-F
I would be interested in seeing the 10 trinaries done in a video like this, the shards & the wedges.
Very cool stuff. Really renews my interest in MTG.
Incredible video holy shit great stuff man
21:30 logic/emotion in Izzet part reminds me of Lawyer Barbie from the Barbie Movie: “This makes me emotional and I’m expressing it. I have no difficulty holding both logic and emotion at the same time, and it does not diminish my powers. It expands them.” (It’s a cool line but it’s also played for laughs.)
That is amazing wow ! Your work is incredible
This channel needs more love. Commenting for algorithm.
We are growing slowly but surely, and honestly it's just kind words posted in the comments of my videos that keep me going. So I appreciate it.
@@DiceTry of course!
@@DiceTry you deserve the comments and likes. I have tried to like every vid I've seen. I'll try and drop comments to get you more traction if I can.
Izzet is just the purest embodiment of adhd... I felt it so strongly.
This is a fantastic treatise.
The description of Golgari (green/black) concept of destiny basically sounds like the Norse concept of _wyrd._
@1:13:58 "Don't call me Shirley" :'D
This is fantastic! 👌
I watched this whole video trying to decide which colors fit me as a person, starting with just the certainty that white was the biggest one
Came away with the certainty i was white green blue
Probably could have saved some brainpower by assuming ally colors first
So you're all about that Bant, 'bout that Bant... No Rakdos!
You're all about that Bant, 'bout that Bant... No Rakdos!
You're all about that Bant, ' bout that Bant... No Rakdos!
Sorry... *giggle*
@@ellaser93this is gold
Amazing video!
As a new channel (not mtg) I really respect all of the hard work that obviously went into this video. Great job, hope you get all the subscribers :).
Your take on Izzet really spoke to me
Great Vid but i also think that part of Green's identity is Might that cannot be ignored.
I would love to sit down sometime and just banter about all this and applying it to life
Izzet philosofy, to me, incapsulates what is to be a true martial artist.
The sharpening of tecnique to try to achive perfection, and the use of emotion to understand the flow of a fight.
I love this. Really incredible work. Do you have plans to cover the three colour groups?
I actually have in the past but it's coming on 2 years of age at this point. I'm thinking 2024 I might give the 3 colors a similar treatment as this
@DiceTry yes, please 🙏
I know im a little late to teh party but on izzit i always thought it as a balance between creativity and logic and to balance both you get creative intelligence that invents and experiments using both logic and impulse
I see myself within Green/Black, Green/Blue, Red/Blue, and Red/Black
I’m more so Blue/Red, Red/White and White/Blue. But I can see some of Green/White’s and Red/Green’s points. Even if I don’t agree with all of it.
Golgari for life!!!!!! Enjoy it so much, and I've evolved into Sultai for commander.
Would be great to see examples for every combination!
My subconscious personality resonates with Azorius, my ego resonates with Boros
makes sense. every deck i enjoy playing is either Azorius or Jeskai
I enjoy building decks that are both unique and efficient.
Maybe try Lorehold
The color that resonates most with me as a person is white, potentially my least favorite color to play
Whereas the color i find most fun to play, black, resonates with me the least
I think theres an interest in the self opposite that impacts whether you like playing your own colors, and a distaste for playing your own colors cuz you see yourself
Try dicetry’s color quiz
I take it every 6 months for keeping up with myself and it really helps to know what colors to focus on, it has increased both my win rate as well as my enjoyment of the game
@@littlebattx where can i find it?
Try Otharri
She's the boros sunbird rebel-allied card. Probably not cEDH worthy, but tack in that, with a few "Fight multiple times" cards, and some token generation, and Otharri is a value engine.
I don't even play Magic but the art is incredible
I love this vid, but it def made me realize that the color pie is just a few steps removed from horoscopes.
All colors are present in every person, that's normal. For what a total absence of a color makes of people look at alara shards
IZZET TLDR
Sees a situation
Makes a calculated risk
Yeet the situation into the wind
Learn from the situation
Repeat the process with slight adjustments to see if anything new is learned from slightest change
Try not to die
When it comes to Izzet, it might find relief in the Realisation that emotion is simply the logic that your true self knows inherently.
Man this vid would be wild if he added tri-colors into this
I do actually have a video similar to this where I go over every 3 colors combinations philosophy.
I have a renewed respect for Simics
Golgari gets super neat when you make a villain with them. (The mycotyrant)
Were I to have organized it, I would have done it in one of three ways:
I was not expecting to see WH40K Gregor Eisenhorn during this vid but here we are
5:38 The chad among ogres, absolute madlad
I know it's a joke set, but is there any chance of an analysis of the color pairs in Unstable in a similar manner to the Strixhaven video? I find the concepts behind the unguilds intriguing, especially how Crossbreed Labs is similar, yet vastly different compared to Simic.
Amazing video 🤌🏾
I don't suppose there's a video delving into the philosophy of the tri-colored guilds is there?
Yup I actually do have that on my channel. Check my home page you should be able to find it
@@DiceTry Awesome! Thanks, Chief! I’ll be binging that at work. 😁
Great video, I love it.
Also, I can't save it on my youtube list, Is this option desactivated for this video?
It shouldn't be
Extra Poll for the comments:
Are the color/s you resonate with, also the colors you like playing the most?
Yes
Actually I do not, funny enough, nearly the opposite. If we are looking at the duo color I resonate with, this is even more true. I resonate more with Izzet or Temur, but play more often in Jund and Abzan. So you can tell, I tend to have a splash of Golgari in my decks. I have tried some Izzet decks and even made some, but I gravitate towards what I mentioned.
Kind of. I'm an Izzet/Temur person, but most of the decks I make and enjoy playing are Dimir. Blue is always a strong influence in me, but I change my mindset when I'm striving for a goal.
Not at all lol, I'm mostly blue oriented in my life, but I play W/G. I guess i may drift toward Bant life wise ? Idk
I'm a golgari/Jund person, and I hate both what Jund stands for and how it plays. Partially because I don't fully get how it plays, but still.
Which character is represented at 15:08???
Pharika, god of affliction
Do you have a list of music from the video?
thinking of it, kamigawa could have been the simic invasion plane card, the land where tradition is enhanced by technology
As a rakdos aligned person I really like this series and find it quite nice to understand myself and others better
Sameeeee
Bro is a terrorist 💀
honestly, different pairs represent me based on context, but the commonality is that they all include black.
What about creativity? Red gives inspiration, and then blue methodicly follows through on it!
White/Red= “I’m a little bit country!”🎵 “And I’m a little bit rock’nroll!”🎶
Nice job vid! How did you choose the order that you listed the color pairs?
It seems a little random, but I wanted to make sure no one color was talked about twice in a row. So I started with GB I believe so the next part I didn't want it to use either Green or Black, and I sort of did that pattern until I had them all
So Golgari is the borg
Greatest video of all time. That is all lol.
As someone who usually plays Rakdos and Mardu. Pretty much.
Just a little idea: Golgari, which comprise of green and black, finds itself ever-questioning both destiny and self determination - paving your own path. The Matrix movies, which are dealing with the same dilema, also share aesthetics of green and black. Coincidence?
Yes! Cool though!
I just recently opened my cards.
Tutors and and Duals and Uzras.
You all are lost. I thought I was confused. Golgari.
IT'S SWAMPS AND FORESTS!
Moss and zombies and trees and death and growth.
So good.
Going to sleep to this
so green and black, For me, it's not as simple as we live for fate or that fate lives for us. we all live to each other. some moments have to happen. others do not
Im sure that if cenobites played magic they would bud a gougari deck as it similar to there believes.that pain and pleasure are one of the same
What about triples?
You're in luck I have covered every shard and wedge, you can check out the marathon video I did for those combinations here: ua-cam.com/video/I4UsCRjJi5w/v-deo.html
Golgari supremecy!!
Sorry for the nit-pick but a properly balanced compost pile smells faintly sweet if it smells at all.
I swear you could put your voice on an audiobook and put people to sleep. Good video but I think I’m gonna listen to this to help me go to bed tonight lol
