I find it interesting that you didn't think Reagan would be reelected in 82. In the summer of 82, I was in between my sophomore and junior years of high school, and I had to take my sophomore level English classes in summer school due failing freshman English two years before. The teacher had us write a persuasion paper at the end of the class and I wrote about why I thought Reagan would be reelected in a landslide. The teacher didn't like what I had to say and clearly hated Reagan, but he gave me a good grade on it. One of the points I made was that people saw Reagan as being and ordinary person like themselves. He just said "Reagan is anything but an ordinary person." Which, he was right. Reagan was not an ordinary person, but he understood the concerns and needs of ordinary people.
In 1983, in the heart of Wisconsin dairy country, we were in a deep recession, and no one was impressed by Reagan at the time. And the family farms never did recover per se. It wasn't until about 1986 and the opening of local Cray computer plants that we noticed any economic rebound. My husband and I were commercial beekeepers, then, and it was about that time that we just gave up on the market and began selling our honey to the government.
