In dune 2 though there was several scenes where they were setting something up and then jumped to paying something else off. The worst case being where Paul was heading into the desert alone and Chani joins him to teach him the ways. We then jump to them winning a battle. Where was the 45 minutes of film in between that? There's a 5-6 hour cut of this film that I think I'd love.

Why does that bother you? It doesn't change the directors vision. Besides, it's art. People are allowed to disagree with the artist and interpret scenes differently. Most people aren't going to edit the deleted scenes into the finished product so having them available doesn't serve any purpose than the viewers amusement. Idk where this whole anti-extra footage sentiment came from, but it's weird that people are trying to make it a new trend.

@simini101 Exactly, several people have noticed that. It's like Ridley Scott's recent Napolean biopic, where you can tell there are gaps in the story that are a bit jarring, and you know stuff was left out. But at least Scott offers us the full version that will be available on Apple TV. Unlike Villenueve who's depriving us of a fuller and more fleshed out story.
Why couldn't he offer Dune Pt.2 Extended on Apple if not Blu-Ray? Blu-Ray & UHD Blu-Ray are better though because of less compression.

He felt it was better for the movie to remove it. Hence, if he put it back in, it would become a worse film under his professional opinion. His decision is more well-informed than yours, as he actually knows the scenes, their context, their impact on the flow, etc. In addition, he's an expert at his craft, why would he want to release a worse version of a movie?@@MrX-zz2vk

There is a part in the film that was a bit confusing and I thought in an extended edition that would explain it. when Chani suddenly is flying an Ornithopter but we didn't get to see when she got it and somehow she was separated from Paul even though in the previous scene they were both riding the sand worms. Also since it cuts out how a character stays behind to distract the Harconin forces as people flee. I guess that won't be shown at all. Either way I respect Denis's decision.

  • @spicymemes7458
    @spicymemes7458 5 місяців тому +10

I appreciate Denis's opinion that the version we saw was the best, but I respectfully disagree with the notion that no one should see deleted scenes. Renowned filmmakers such as Peter Jackson, Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Guillermo del Toro, and Terry Gilliam have released alternative and extended cuts that enhance, rather than detract from, the original experience. These cuts serve as supplementary content that adds to an already enjoyable film. It is important to recognize that Denis's perspective is personal and does not necessarily indicate the beginning of a trend, as some individuals may suggest.

    • @joelsommers

I've heard Denis talk about this before. Regarding the earlier DUNE film and regarding almost all of his previous movies, including BLADERUNNER & ARRIVAL. He is obsessive about telling the story he wants to tell the way he wants to tell it the first time, and the only time. He literally does not consider the movie with deleted scenes returned to be the same story or as good a story.
For instance, we know that originally DUNE Part 2 had an extended sequence that included the Mentat Thurfir Hywatt from the first movie. It took weeks to film and was very long and complicated. It took place after Duke Leto's murder, and involved Thurfir being mentally broken and then being forced into service for the Baron. The actor talked about what a pleasure it was to work with Austin Butler and about how proud he was of his and everyone's performances--and about how much he wishes that story beat had remained.
But Deni didn't cut it because it was bad or because the movie was too long already. He has said over and over that he makes the movies the length they need to be. Rather, he said he cut it because it made the overall story more muddied; including that sequence subtly changed the entire movie because then it was no longer just about the Benne Jesuit acting as the dominant force behind all political intrigue. The scenes went deeply into mentat culture and gave hints about the power wielded by the great mentat school, which left Denis feeling that to include those scenes also indirectly diminished how powerful the Benne Jesuit seemed. Denis said, "I'm telling a Bene Jesuit story, not a metnat story....so those parts had to go. And it broke my heart."
Dude literally spends months with the editors fine tuning his movies until what he releases are the absolute closest thing to his intended vision. The theatrical release IS the movie and anything else just distorts viewers' understanding and expectations.
Personally, I'd still love to see that stuff, but I'm kind of in awe about how fanatical Denis is about protecting the integrity of the stories he wants to tell.

@@joelsommers - I would refer you to my original comment: there is a difference between a “director’s cut” and an “extended cut.” we understand that the theatrical release is the definitive version, but that doesn’t mean the deleted scenes can’t add to details and depth to the story, or that they should go to waste and never be appreciated by anyone.
and also… Villeneuve is a master of his craft, but I’d say pacing is one area he could use some improvement 🤷🏻‍♂️

I would have loved to have seen that stuff. But Denis said bluntly that keeping it changed the entire movie. He wanted to tell a story about the Bene Jesuit as the Imperium's political puppeteers and those Thurfir scenes brought mentat power into the lore, which DV said somehow diminished how the BJ came across. sometimes the "real" movie does not make it to the theatres because the directors need to cut out scenes because of non artistic reasons, e.g. shorter runtime, PG13 restrictions etc. There is a difference between "deleted scenes" and the ones which make it into a "directors cut". "Directors' cuts" are an indication that the studio got its way and the director compromised in some manner, and the *real* movie isn't what was intended.
The Kubricks of this world (of which Denis is) are immune to control once they've proven themselves. They see time as their greatest enemy, the ultimate limiter of the projects they'll get to do before they go, so *wasting* time making approximations of the fundamental ideas reduces the slices of genius they can cut from their aging bones. Life's too short to go by half measures.

Never is a long time. Especially when the film has been out for two years and ceases to make money. Expect a reworked, much longer directors cut, in about three years. The producers and investors of this property will demand it, so Dune can continue making them money. The makers of the three Dune Movies better get on board with doing it, so they can control the final product. Otherwise, the investors will get a hack to do it, and the 'directors cut will be an awful, inferior product. This will not be the last Dune series of movies ever made so they better not try to hallucenate this thing is the end all be all. It's a money making endeavor.

I also think it depends on why it was cut out. You hear so many times, that the reason a scene was cut from the movie was for time (in that they were given a directive from the studio that a particular film should not exceed a certain amount of minutes), and not to improve the flow of the movie, but so that it can increase the number of movie showings at the theatre etc.

Losing whole versions of movies (famously Magnificent Ambersons, or even Blade Runner) in this case its not studio interference like it was for those two examples, which is nice but even seeing the alternate scene or deleted scene is a great way of showing the creative method and also preventing losing any future media. Saying it just doesn't exist is not really true and it might even be worthwhile to showcase how hard all these people worked on it but still comment on why it had to be cut. Brad Bird does that with some of his films and the way he explains the process is so educational.

The ones interested in the longer version of these movies are the die hard fans who LOVED them to begin with and have seen/will have seen each Part over and over again by the time this trilogy is done. They should be rewarded down the road (10 year anniversary?) with a much longer cut.

However, this may remove some of the shock of her death in Messiah. This is all purely from a greedy standpoint haha - film does very well to convey it succinctly - picked up a lot more on second watch. Film is just phenomenal tbh. I think this is much less problematic. Besides: Filmmaking is not a democracy. Someone has to make a call as to what ends up on screen or on disc. Even if they did release deleted scenes or an extended cut there's still so much concept art, so many lines of dialog and a countless number of different takes per scene that will never see the light of day regardless. He makes no sense. We deserve extended cuts of Dune, this book is too dense and too many plotlines have been cut off from the movie just for timing and commercial reasons. I get that you can't make a 3:30 h movie for cinema release, but once the film is out in Blu-ray or streaming I don't see why can't we see a longer version with more scenes that can add deepness and richness to the story. Especially in this case where you're adapting a really big book and having already shot those scenes... Some of them may not work, but I'm sure most of them wouldn't feel out of place at all if they were re-integrated in the film.

Most of the book elements that got cut were related to Thufir Hawat being captured by the Harkonnens and a traitor plotline that wasn't included in Part 1 anyway. If you spend as much time, energy, resources and talent as Villenueve did, and then throw hours of great content out just...because, that's extremely wasteful!

Which is why it's good to have 2 versions of it on Blu-Ray. The Theatrical version for those who are fine with that, and a longer, more extensive experience for those who want to live in that world some more and enjoy all that he got on film. Because again, to throw away all that great content that he, Greig, Hans, the whole cast put in so much of themselves for is a terrible waste.
