It's the English dub that did not do justice to this important scene for Roxas. In the original (japanese) language, he said "No! Xion! Let's go to the beach together!" He meant that with both Axel and Xion. The three made a promise. As Sora's part, Roxas made the "Other Promise", one that neve came true, while Sora kept his promise to Kairi that he would return to her with Riku and he did.

Roxas is such an immaculate character. I've never felt so much remorse over someone from fiction before, knowing and feeling what they felt so personally as when I played the games. The introduction to him in Kingdom Hearts II, the strange and out-of-context world of Twilight Town and his sleepy and relaxed normal life, being slowly torn down around him. This boy, you don't even know who he is, being "graced" with a Keyblade that's so similar to Sora's, and begs the question of who he must be. The glimpses of Roxas wearing that black coat that you know belongs to the enemies you met in the previous game. Yet he doesn't seem so bad, he seems like just a normal kid? All of it coming back to him as the town breaks even more, as he realises he's far from normal. He's not even really a kid, he's just a non-existent being. He's someone that was never meant to be born. A mistake, in the most absolute horrible, painful sense. But he hasn't done a thing wrong. He just wants to live a normal life. He just wants his friends back, he wants his life back. But painful memories of his old life, his true reality and everything he's gone through, coming back to him. A painful year of fighting to be recognised as a real person. Of strife as this practical newborn tries to find his way through this strange world he's been thrust into, growing up fighting for his life, having so much weight thrown onto his shoulders, yet not a care given to how Roxas would proceed. As long as he did their bidding, they didn't care. And when he finally lashed out, after being loyal to the questionable cause for an entire year of agonising over your purpose, who your friends are, and holding one of them during her fleeting moments, he was to be dragged back to keep doing his job. To keep collecting hearts and keep doing the bidding of those higher than him. Even with all the anger and rage he could muster, Roxas couldn't stop them. He couldn't even save himself. All of it, it serves to remind Roxas that no, you're not allowed to live a normal life. You're not even allowed to exist. You owe the life you have to someone else. You have that person's memories, you can see glimpses of a life you swear you never lived. And you can't keep existing if that Somebody is supposed to wake up. Roxas was not meant to exist. He knows this now. But that doesn't change the fact that he did exist. He did have a life, and he had his routines. He had friends that he ate ice cream with, and laughed about stupid things with. Friends that he cried over as they left him, or had to fight to keep himself from being dragged back into the Organization's grasp. And in the end, he was the only one who truly understood himself. No one knew what agony Roxas had truly gone through. Or if they did, then it was of little consequence to their own objectives. He's the very definition of tragedy. Of innocence being destroyed. Of rage rising in the otherwise pure of heart. Roxas has every right to every ounce of anger he must've felt throughout the series. The poor boy, born without memories, barely even knew who he was. @KinglyRed Actually I think that's not the other promise. I don't want to criticize your opinion, especially since there is no right answer in this case but here is my interpretation of the title: Remember when Roxas said "You're making a good other"? That's the sentece my theory bases on. I think that the title doesn't mean "another promise" but rather "the promise of the "other(s)"" with the condition that "other" means in this case a counterpart. And thinking of promises Roxas is involved in, the one that is the most logical one for me is the one Namine gave Roxas before DiZ interfered, namely the one where she says that they'll meet again, even if they don't recognize each other. This makes even more sence with the fact that Namine is the "other" of Kairi. So in my opinion the title is reference to the promise Sora gave Kairi at the end of KH1 that he'll come back to her. That's the original promise Sora gave to Kairi and the one from Namine to Roxas, basicly the same one, is "the other promise". One last thing that may deny your thesis is, that this theme had his first apperience in KH2 which was released earlier than KH358Days, so the title was the other promise before the promise of Axel even existed, but as I said it's a matter of interpretation and anyone can decide for themselves which one they agree with or if they even have an own one.

Roxas is my favorite character (I've played almost every game, but not 3 yet though I know the spoilers) IMO it was a narrative mistake to let him be happy at the end of 3. It still works, but the tragedy of Roxas was that he had to give up his existence for Soras. Reversing that need lessens the impact of that sacrifice. I do like that Sora is the one who gets shafted at the end of 3, and everyone else is free and happy. That dampens the narrative mistake through inversion.
@@shonen_x_trash2488 i've played kingdom hearts since i was 7 but i don't really like the direction the game went with kingdom hearts 3. the game use to be 50/50 disney and final fantasy but its leaning more and more into disney, the trailer for kh4 gives me hope that the game will start to lean more center again.
In another timeline, Roxas would have been an *excellent* sympathetic villain and I think that’s why I love his arc so much. He had every reason to get completely fed up with life since so many were telling him he had no right to exist and he was only a stand-in or a puppet for greater powers. He could have EASILY decided to burn all of it down: darkness, light, Nobodies, Somebodies, all of it. But his love for his friends and his will to live freely were so strong that he chose to fight to get it all back instead, even fighting Sora and Riku each to a standstill. What an absolute legend.
Sora does some brainless things to save his friends (see: KH3 ending) but I have yet to see evidence that Sora ever had a brain in the first place, so yeah this checks out.
It took me far too long to understand this song's name. Sora, Riku, and Kairi have already made THE promise. Roxas, Axel, and especially Xion are only facsimiles of the somebodies they came from. Everything they desire, they dream of, and they love is destined to be this sort of "other," always in the shadow of the real thing, and destined to be sacrificed for those with a heart. Their promise is made insignificant by its futility, in clinging to a sense of joy that should never have existed; Thus, it is "the other promise:" an addendum to the main story instead of being a story itself.
"No one would miss me."
"That's not true...I would."
That phrase destroyed me 😪
We all did miss Roxas
The irony in that is that Axel WOULD miss him, but he is indeed, a nobody.
Technically Roxas ain't wrong
One of the greatest revelations I've gained concerning this theme is the fact that it isn't completely a song of sadness, it's a song of anger.

"You make a good other" ... that fight was a must for roxas... he freed himself from all that anger he had and finally has the answer he was looking for all that time
He found the one who could give him answers. He trusts him.
「my summer vacation is over」A song that reminds me of these words
Axel: roxas!
Roxas: My turn
Xemnas: Where did you found your vessel?
Roxas: Same as you.....
Xemnas: Same how?
Roxas: Most of the organization members....they travel through here as hearts. they were wandered and waiting one and each of them.
Xemnas: Who told you?
Roxas: I owe my return to many.......some of the people you knew.
Xemnas: Ansem da wise......zexion
Roxas: And others too.....it seems you cannot winning over people's heart as you think.
Xemnas: Ah.....i see.
“There is one last thing I needed in order for me to be whole again. A connection. Sora helped me find my way back here... to my friends.”
My brother said to me:
"Don't listen to your bullies, only care about yourself and your friends."
And that's exactly what I'll do.
I had always feel the Days and BBS trios really hits you like a rollercoaster.
"I'm not gonna cry, I'm not gonna cry, I'm not gonna cry.... I'm crying?"
Me, rn
YES SOMEBODY POSTED IT AGAIN THANK YOU
God just hearing the beginning makes me tear up a slight bit
Imagine if all games put this much effort into a soundtrack
4:31 strong chill🥺❤️
You're lucky... looks like my summer vacation's... over
That art is *beautiful*
Song puts me to tears.
It’s kinda crazy but if roxas stayed dead it would have made this so much more impactful in my opinion
Beautiful!!
Powerful rendition! I love this so much
Ill always come back to this track guess u can call it a connection
This video needs WAY more likes
Thank you for posting this! I've been looking for it everywhere!
Never thought I'd see Kairi playing trombone, yet here we are...
What an absolute legend.
this is so fucking beautifull happy to bein alive in this era...
Here before they take it down

Out of all the Friendship chiché,KH did it well as no one gone brainless because of “my friend is in danger”,which often portrait on Anime
Sora does some brainless things to save his friends (see: KH3 ending) but I have yet to see evidence that Sora ever had a brain in the first place, so yeah this checks out.

No one has a download link just for this song right?
Just go to youtube converter and download it
Ain't no one gonna talk how this just sounds like ReCoded but in more of a sad music
you say you "accept" it?
It took me far too long to understand this song's name. Sora, Riku, and Kairi have already made THE promise. Roxas, Axel, and especially Xion are only facsimiles of the somebodies they came from. Everything they desire, they dream of, and they love is destined to be this sort of "other," always in the shadow of the real thing, and destined to be sacrificed for those with a heart. Their promise is made insignificant by its futility, in clinging to a sense of joy that should never have existed; Thus, it is "the other promise:" an addendum to the main story instead of being a story itself.
It cannot be.
