Another thing is, that I don't think many people realize this, but that in-car video typically looks pretty slow, and making it look this fast is a true skill because it means you're one of the rare people that is actually really fast. I'm a huge fan of Ken, he's a cool guy, in person, too, and even though he'll never be a world champ, he's a fast, fast driver. I digress, keep it up, Ken!
People claim to gain and lose respect for WRC drivers and alike, Personally i believe that these people should have some involvement in motor racing, and only then will they comprehend the amount of concentration and physical stamina, as well as hand eye co-ordination skills, and lightning reflexes required to control a vehicle at such speed, I for one am blown away by ALL of the drivers, and would like to "see you do better". This is incredible.
@drizzy645 I think that these cars are double-clutched , which basically means that the driver doesn't physically have to put his foot down on the clutch. When he pulls or pushes the lever the car automatically puts the clutch down and slots itself into the correct gear.
Although it's easy to say Ken Block isn't as fast as other rally drivers, the first person views like this show how terrifying it is to fly down narrow roads on uneven terrain. He may not be the best at rally, but he is damn good. I'd probably wet myself or go stupidly slowly.
the fact that he competes in the wrc is enough to show he's at wrc skill level. not loeb or hirvonen skill level but still, he has skill and you cant deny that. he does better than alot of drivers in the wrc, at least he's scored points in the only 2 rallies he's taken part in this year.
@zimThuet I'm not 100% certain about this answer, but I don't think these cars use manual clutches. They have an automated manual transmission and everything. So pretty much, the shifter is sequential like that on a bike, or formula one vehicles and each time he pulls that lever (or pushes) a computer system knows, actuates a pneumatic valve which depresses the clutch, changes gear, releases clutch. One pull does it all.
Man, I must say I just love the helmet cam! But may I suggest one test? How about trying a HDR video config, using 2 cams in stereo placement; one cam set for the in-car dark/shadows and the other cam set to the outside light/highlights, then merging them into a HDR video? cheers man, keep it up!
Nice Ken, very nice... If I was sitting in the right seat , I would need one of those airline bags to store my breakfast :) . I was driven in rally cars before , in fact even in old Ken Block's Subaru (now belongs to Andrew Wickline) , but going for a ride with K.B would be a the best thrill ride EVER.
@LiLNetworker that wasn't really a ford fiesta it just used the frame of a ford fiesta. They put a carbon fiber body (shaped like a ford fiestas body) on it and put performance parts in it.
@Nabz687 You don't have to use a clutch at all if you can match the RPMs correctly. That goes for any car with manual transmission not just rally cars.
@acuradan623 What are you talking about? Ken Block sets competitive times in the WRC with other pros such as Latvala, Loeb, Ogier, Hirvonen, Solberg, etc...
@LaneTD15 No as it's a sequential shift gearbox. Normally the clutch is only used to get the car moving, the rest is clutchless. Racecars ally cars have some amazing systems in them :)
@Kontext51 Yeah I know its possible but if you don't push the clutch the plates in the car will grind against the transmission. This would damage the car quite severley if you did it on a regular basis
@LaneTD15 From what I understand, the computer kills the engines ignition thus killing the power delivery for a few milliseconds which unloads the gears in the gearbox and then ...... that's the extent of my knowledge :( If you have a manual car, drive along in second gear take your foot off the gas, then you can pull 2nd gear back to neutral without the clutch, but you can't if you were accelerating. The sequential gearbox is loosely based on this principle :)
@jwrx7tt01 My guess is an engine/transmission management switch to change from race mode so the car is easier to drive at slower speeds(or to turn down power when it is not needed. probably both).
eco boost engine, turbo, 300 bhp at 6000 rpm, 450 lb ft of torque. AWD. and the turbo has a non lag feature that keeps it spinning the entire time, 0-100 km 2.2 seconds.
The Cleanest looking ford fiesta i've ever seen
Every WRC driver is incredible, even the ones at the back.

This dude is the coolest guy to ever drive a Fiesta.
I love how ken is in full fire suit and safety gear booking a good 90 mph most of the time, and the dude beside him is in jeans and a t shirt

So i watched this video, then got my permit and took my first driving lesson, then watched it again and have so much more respect for it now... damn.

I wish they hadn't cut to an outside shot in the hairpins. I want to see how far ahead he's looking!
Awesome video, keep them coming!
this tipe of on board camera ist so nice . every on board rally video just be like this =D
Man, I must say I just love the helmet cam!
But may I suggest one test?

We want more videos like this. Headcam POWA!
@Nabz687 You don't have to use a clutch at all if you can match the RPMs correctly. That goes for any car with manual transmission not just rally cars.
The "navigator" is praying :D
i like the calm way the passenger sits in the car :D
Love it how the passenger is sitting so calm :)
hes not the passenger hes the navigator
havent watched the vid yet but i just wanna say ken blocks a boss
KEN BLOCK on Stuff Phil Likes! I'm almost proud of being a fan of Gymkhana.
Love the sounds of his cars
Except for turbo
I wanna see the camera like on the top or something so you can just get a good wide view of the road wizzing past
WHY AM I NOT SUBSCRIBED TO THIS ALREADY!?!?!
That solid I-beam front axle is very responsive. This will pave the way for rally Greyhound buses. Destination in 1/2 the time.
@acuradan623 What are you talking about? Ken Block sets competitive times in the WRC with other pros such as Latvala, Loeb, Ogier, Hirvonen, Solberg, etc...
Really like this, they should use helmetcams on WRC broadcastings also! :)
Man, this looks fun! I wish I could go out driving like that for a day.
Ken is improving his rally driving skills, much less drifting now, that's great!
The hands of they guy he has with him are clinched like "OH God, don't let me die."
@LaneTD15 No as it's a sequential shift gearbox. Normally the clutch is only used to get the car moving, the rest is clutchless. Racecars
ally cars have some amazing systems in them :)
Phil: "...It might be sponsored..."
First thing I see "Monster" logo. -_-
HD and full screen ftw.
@Kontext51 Yeah I know its possible but if you don't push the clutch the plates in the car will grind against the transmission. This would damage the car quite severley if you did it on a regular basis
The guy in shotgun's hands are completely tense. I can't even imagine how intensely frightening it would be to not be in control of that car.
Sick transmission what are all the buttons on the steering wheel?
@LaneTD15 From what I understand, the computer kills the engines ignition thus killing the power delivery for a few milliseconds which unloads the gears in the gearbox and then ...... that's the extent of my knowledge :(

How can these guys be so damn calm?
Amazing...Notice the passengers hands tightly clenched together, praying he lives.
Nice job Ken, keep it up.
Had this in full screen and I still shitted my pants.
this is way better than gymkhana stuff. 1 pass no film editing crap.
Does he have to manualy operate the clutch? Or its just the stick?
Cool vid, great driving
@jwrx7tt01
My guess is an engine/transmission management switch to change from race mode so the car is easier to drive at slower speeds(or to turn down power when it is not needed. probably both).
This guy should be my defensive drivers course teacher!
what a calm passenger!
holy shit at 0:43 that cood be the best rally drift ive ever seen!
@xdoomedx14 Yes he is. All of them have to use it. Last year they had it on the steering wheel.
@johnnyA91 These never get old do they?
ken block: fire resistance stuit and crash helmet. passenger: jeans and a t-shirt
what did he press at the end of the video? around 2:08
ken block very complete driver...he does it all!!!!
while i have no respect as for block as a wrc driver, his videos are good
NATION PASSIN THROUGH
now thats how a racing game should be!
eco boost engine, turbo, 300 bhp at 6000 rpm, 450 lb ft of torque. AWD. and the turbo has a non lag feature that keeps it spinning the entire time, 0-100 km 2.2 seconds.
7000 rpm*
*8000
OVER 9000!
how the heck does the shifting work on that thing???
sick driving skills
ken block is a BOSS!
i don't understand how he was shifting.... can some one explain it to me?
the question is: why he doesn't do that in wrc?
this guy has balls of steel. I shit my pants when I go down a narrow mountain pass like that at 40 mph xD
@produKtNZ so it doesnt damage the transmission?
Epic driving
these cars are so fuckin fast lol... i cant even imagine piloting an old group b rs2000... fuckin awesome! i love these helmet cam vids!!!
Nuts!!!! LOVE Ken Block!
where can i tune my fiesta so it could be like that?
You should try it in full screen HD ;)
How do you get a ford fiesta to sounds like that?
I think just much more drifting. If u see the real wrc, u will know, how expert they are. Ken is legend just about the content they did.
The visibility is absolutely disgusting on this one, but it is Ken Block behind the wheel
Clean run.
Rip Ken Block
180 degree input? :O
Ken block is a beast
So why wasn't the passenger wearing an SFI suit like they should? That seems pretty dangerous in case there was a crash.
Is he pushing in the clutch?
My god that looks so fun.
Serious question: Is that a 4 cylinder?
1.6T engine not 2.0T.
my god, how many gears doees it have??
Ten and two now Ken, ten and two!
@SlightestShade or a bloss?
It's amazing he didn't crash. I was actually worried for the passenger...
If this is his "first tarmac test" he's a bloody confident bugger.
where are the cup holders????? :(
@doorOfSouls It's called Need For Speed Shift 2 Unleashed.
The guy on the passenger seat is praying throughout the whole run lol
they should make more vidz. like these
how did they make a rally car out of a fiesta?
I didn't know ken block could drive in a straight line!
@trisrebel It's in the playlist because Phil liked it. Simple.
Guess this guy is the new Drift King.
Interesting how the mirrors seem to be pointing out, not really much use! :-)
And still would wish to be a WRC rally car...FAAAAAAAR from it
But that is a WRC rally car
is he using slap shift?
@Pangjunmin
Have you ever seen an F1 wheel?
@CallumPos125 its a co driver, not a passanger.
