EP 110 - Do I need to fertilise my succulents?
Last week we discussed soil mixes. We have focused on mechanical qualities of the soil such as its composition and drainage. This episode is a direct continuation of that, this time focusing on the chemical qualities such as soil pH and nutrients.
I have been stressing the point that you shouldn’t just blindly copy what others are doing and instead look into what’s the best for your situation
When it comes to fertilising succulents, there seems to be two camps of opposing opinions - those who fertilise their plants, and those who don’t. It will appear that I fall in the second camp, but depending on how you look at it, I’m somewhere in between.
Succulents do not really need that much nutrients to thrive. In their natural state, they grow in arid, nutrient-poor areas anyway. This is where proponents of the no-fertiliser camp are coming from.
On the other hand, succulents are still living things, and they will appreciate a bit of nutrition. Plants in cultivation obviously have different growing conditions compared to those in the wild. Take the typical domesticated dog for example. We usually give them kibble. We do not give them raw meat, well we can, but that doesn’t come without its set of problems. Anyway the point here is that cultivated plants are no longer exactly like the plants in the wild, so you can’t assume that they have exactly the same needs.
I think the better approach here is to understand how fertilisers work so you can decide whether you need it or not.

I tend to post a lot of non-video stuff on Facebook.
I forgot to mention this, but for succulents you will need to dilute or weaken the dose of the synthetic fertilisers. You will want around 5. So e.g. you find a 10:10:10 NPK fertiliser, use half of the suggested dose. This means it becomes 5:5:5.
If it is not equal, base it on the highest number. E.g. if you have a 15:5:5, use 1/3rd so that the highest number of 15 becomes 5.

I have a red worm compost bin for vegetables that expire and use the casting clumps dropped on the top soil and/or the “tea” that drains in the bottom chamber mixed half with water and apply to my succulents every 2-4 weeks year round here in temperate San Diego since it is a mild fertilizer. Works for me. It’s free, recycles spent food, and decreases landfill use. The wormies are cute and proliferate. Check out how to make a red worm compost bin on here by The Environmentalists. :)

I began growing succulents last year in February 2019 just as a small hobby to get me through menopause & keep me sane but it’s so addictive & I’m amazed at how quickly and easily they grow &:produce pups in Perths climate. My collection is only small and all in pots. I’ve had only a small amount of failures so far but have learned from my mistakes. Start of spring and I’m so very eager to get repotting & re-arranging a few new looks. Happy spring! 🌱🌿☘️🍀🌵

I stay in South Dakota too. Last year I had succulents thrive outside that summer, then had to bring them inside and lost all of them but a few stems. They started growing babies last month and I purchased 54 last week.
I use banana peels to fertilize all my plants!! It provides the potassium. It works!!
I have found that using an all purpose fertilizer ( only very small amount ) really does help my succulents .

Wow Chuck - that's a lot to absorb (pun intended). Well done. So, some folks use their aquarium water to fertilize their succulents. I don't keep a fish tank any more, otherwise that's what I'd probably use.. Fish manure - I suppose haha. So instead I bought a fish based fertilizer for succulents at the store - I only used it once so far - a year ago. My problem is - I'm worried my plants will get too big since I have such limited space under my grow lights!
Ah, the dilemma of wanting and not wanting them to grow at the same time haha!

So I confused about ph, if your soil is far to alkaline what things to put in to correct it..I mean the chemical or anything to put in.. vice versa on the acidity soil, can you just put garden lime in the mixer or else.... Thank you for the great clips and knowledge ..Newcastle AU
Do lithops need to fertiliser?
What all in one store bought fertilizer would be suggested? For succulents.
For succulents, you generally want something that has a balanced NPK ratio (the numbers close to each other). Most fertilisers have high Nitrogen content, which is good for leafy plants but not so much for most succulents. You do not want them to take up too much nitrogen because this will force them to grow too fast and end up getting elongated (and weaker) in the process. For such fertilisers, you generally would dilute them (if liquid) or use half or a much smaller dose based on the concentration.

Haha thanks Robin. The whole gardening thing is just something I do on the side, a hobby. I like to think that I am a very fast learner though. I like reading, researching, and experimenting a lot, and I take note of what I have learned, both theoretical and practical.

Yes you can, but you'll have to check the nutrient information to know how much you need to dilute it.
@@Cerriscapades It Says 30ml for 15Ltr water.
@@jasminemalhotra7947 Check for the nutrient content, like how much nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) it has. I checked on wikipedia, an it says it usually has something around 0.3%N, 0.1%P and 1%K. Yours might be different, but if it is like this, it's pretty weak as a fertilizer, so you can go for the dosage that is written on the label.
