Hey! I don't think I ever left a comment while I was pondering this concept at first upload, but... Getting into professional history myself, I can say that this seems to continue to be a relevant problem, especially outside of professional spheres - my family and weird internet goobers, for example. I find an interesting angle on nationalism is its threads from self-determination as outlined by Kant and its development into national self-determination as described by Fichte - to full-blown nationalistic fervor for most ethnic groups in Europe by ~1850. To avoid rambling about a topic I'd LOVE to ramble about for hours since researching it in my university courses, consider this a Bravo, Mr. Wolf of 1918! I just wish there were more spaces to really talk about this stuff, instead of listening to videos, as I think productive discussions are an amazing thing.
I agree a lot with this message nationalistic takes do lots of bad especially for young history buffs who are very impressionable now I have given my fair share of nationalistic takes but when It comes to brass tax I don't really believe them just like sports I may say my Bears will win a super bowl but we all know their is a curse placed on the Bears and as long as Mrs McCaskey lives we shall never win a bowl game Nationalistic takes are not to be taken seriously only as jokes because they can never stand in a historical debate
I signed in just to comment on your video. Having met and dealt with a fair bit of nationalists within the historical reenactment sphere myself unfortunately has caused me to quit at least three reenacted units who's leadership drank the kool-aid a bit toooo far. For all of their research and troves of books they had read and kept in their library collection, I had a particular disagreement between someone who thought that modern Germany needed to revive the "good old Imperial Prussia" days back to militarism and kick immigrants out of the land. It was one hell of an awful take that this person somehow mixed into wanting the same to the US and you can take one guess what I did after that. How people still can not see that nationalism is the same thing that allowed "nice guys" like the Nazis to take over Germany during the dying days of Weimar just baffles me. Things like that did not just occur in vacuum. They happened because it was an appeal to people who thought they were backed into a corner and could do nothing else. The same thing happened when the war in Europe was at it's closing days. And they used language similar to what my ex-friend did when he spoke his thoughts to me earlier this year. Needless to say, I quit his reenacted unit and want nothing to do with them anymore.
The way I see it, politics has no place in history. One can discuss the historical politics of a country sure, but one must not allow personal politics to skew ones historical perspective. Also, I think one should have some manner of pride in their nation, but don't let it skew your historical perspective.
I agree completely with everything you said in your video, Nationalism gave us WWI, WWII, fascism, nazism, and contemporary forms of Islamophobia, Eurocentrism, Putin, the extreme Pan-Slavism of today, and the new rise of the right. Nationalism has been the poison that destroyed centuries of cultural exchange and has isolated peoples from one another, it’s still a problem we haven’t managed to solve even if our world seems much more connected and cosmopolitan than ever. And I suspect that the concept works because it’s abstract enough to attribute the “nation” and the “fatherland” mystical, teleological and trascendental powers that allow the oppression of others, sadly it seems we have learnt nothing from our common past.
(moved to here) Howdy wolf! Uh, dunno if you still post or anything, may move this to a more recent upload to contact ya, but im curious of where to get those coffee tins? I've searched everywhere, and even looked for that "fritz barr" fella, but i get no results. Can ye help me?
Great video as always, Appreciating one's heritage and culture is important, thinking of yourself as better and taking pride for something you had no say on (such as the place you were born in) is just Mentally challenged behaviour. I don't debate with religious people for the same reason I don't debate with nationalists, fanatical sheep. On another note, what would you think of someone wearing an iron cross necklace, I've had one but not only for my interest in pre-ww1 and ww1 history but also my involvement in heavy metal and it being a prominent rebellious symbol such as in bands like Motörhead. Even though I only ever wore it in combination with my other "metal" clothing (leather jacket with patches, band t-shirts, etc) Lately I've refrained from wearing it in order to avoid being taken as a crazy right winger or as some sort of stolen valor. What's your opinion on this?
Theres quite a bit, actually, whether that is the destruction it wroughts or the divisiveness it inherently creates, the symptoms of nationalism are pain and suffering, and its few benefits can be found in far better belief systems that dont include the overwhelming negations of the archaic ideology that spurred imperialism and the nazi regime. Take patriotism, for example.
@@line8124It is appealing to the tribal caveman part of our brains. It doesn't matter if another group is justified in having their land, we can still smash them with rocks until it's our land. It essentially is oppression caused by the laws of physics, the universe is an unjust hierarchy

many dont even bothering picking up a book yet deem themselves an expert on the subject

Just a question i wont kindly leave, why is nationalism evil or bad.
I explained that in the video
Oh okay. But the thing is there is nothing inherently evil in nationalism.@@Wolfof1918
