If something is truly a vice for, you would try to free yourself completely from your emotional dependence on it. The degree to which you enjoy/use something is entirely up to you 😊 But if you're uncomfortable with your emotional dependence on something, than you shouldn't be trying to substitute one vice with another no matter how seemingly harmless. The dynamic of emotional dependence is still there 😮😅🤷♀️🙈 If you give yourself no leeway or compassion, and don't tackle the root of your dependence you're gonna re-create this dynamic over and over in your life
@babygirlt8938 yeah, addiction/patterns of addiction tend to thrive in secrecy/repression. If you live in a very restrictive community, people will latch on to the one thing they can have if they feel like they have nothing else :P
Went to Utah to onboard a new team for work earlier this year and there was a Swig 2 minutes away from the office. They took me on the 2nd day I was there…. It was like a rite of passage for me 😂
English is not my first language but when I hear hot drinks it suddenly reminds me of alcohol. Drinks that make you feel hot sensation inside the body? I have no ideas it made more sense to me that way.
I get what you mean, but in this context, hot drinks means non-alcoholic beverages, because Mormons are not allowed by their religion to drink alcohol…. So coffee and tea
As someone that does not drink alcohol by choice and when I recently visited Utah, I was ecstatic! It was certainly a treat trying out a "dirty soda," but of course this is just from a outsider viewpoint nothing to do with religion lol. This is definitely the OG before watertok was a thing lol.
I assure anyone reading this that getting addicted to caffeine is not a belief you can either have or not have. It is a fact that caffeine is addictive
My theory is that it adds the creaminess they’re looking for in their Starbucks substitute while having a fruity taste that tends to mesh better with a lot of the soda flavors like Mountain Dew/sprite
I am not Mormon and never have been, and I love coffee. But I would totally go to one of these soda shops if they expanded into less LDS filled states. Just to have a different kind of business. People buying soda know it has sugar, it’s not like people don’t know. So do starbucks coffee drinks.

I live in Indianapolis and our first Swig location opened here two months ago. I obviously had to go lol. I went during their soft opening and the line wasn't that bad. Maybe took 10 or 15 minutes? About a month after they opened, I went back and the line was wrapped around the parking lot and had attendants outside directing traffic. And this was just on a Saturday afternoon. Another location is opening near me soon, and I know it will be insanity. But yeah... I also kind of love the sodas lol.
i like sugar. i like me a nice little chai latte. but man even i adjust my drink for less syrup or sugar free syrup. i like how in Boba drink shops or other Asian drink shops they let you choose the sweetness level. 85 Degrees has a delicious sea salt matcha latte and i get it at like half sweetness and it's so good.
Really? I also never heard of Italian sodas until this video, but I had seen, heard and even tried root beer floats because of cartoons I watched when I was younger
The soda thing for Mormons definitely goes before the 2010s but in a slightly different form. My Mormon grandma and her sisters have been dedicated gas station coke drinkers for decades. They each have their own preference of ratios with diet and regular coke mixed, different amounts of ice, and different syrups they steal from the coffee counter. The dirty soda shop is an expansion on this concept.
When I was a kid, a root beer float was a special treat, like maybe a twice-a-month thing if my parents bought ice cream and a big bottle of root beer. You'd have one and that was it! How these people can guzzle so much sugar on a daily basis is beyond me. I once ordered a chai latte from a coffee shop that was much, much sweeter than I thought it was going to be, and I felt so ill.
Oh my god I used to work at one of these! It was a soda shop and a competitor to crumbl cookie. I had no idea “dirty sodas” were a thing. Only a handful of the employees were mormon and they were pretty chill, I got the feeling she was only mormon because she was brought into it. I gained like 10lbs working there just from making myself soda potions. My favorite was cherry and coconut syrup with maraschino cherries with dr pepper or pineapple and coconut syrup with sprite. I would even make my own baja blasts. I miss working there it was fun but it closed down once crumbl cookie moved in :/
Not just soda… I was in UT in 2014 in the “middle of nowhere” and the Krispy Kreme donut shop had huge lines, too. Crumbl Cookie was also founded by two Mormons in Utah.

😂🍫🍭🍪🍬
This is why Starbucks is super popular in Salt Lake where I live. Ex mormons find out that their sugar addictions could now apply to sugar milk coffee.
If something is truly a vice for, you would try to free yourself completely from your emotional dependence on it.
The degree to which you enjoy/use something is entirely up to you 😊
But if you're uncomfortable with your emotional dependence on something, than you shouldn't be trying to substitute one vice with another no matter how seemingly harmless. The dynamic of emotional dependence is still there 😮😅🤷♀️🙈
If you give yourself no leeway or compassion, and don't tackle the root of your dependence you're gonna re-create this dynamic over and over in your life
True, but I think people will always try to replace one vice for another, they just try to choose the lesser of two evils
Thanks for sharing 👍
@babygirlt8938 yeah, addiction/patterns of addiction tend to thrive in secrecy/repression. If you live in a very restrictive community, people will latch on to the one thing they can have if they feel like they have nothing else :P
Went to Utah to onboard a new team for work earlier this year and there was a Swig 2 minutes away from the office.
They took me on the 2nd day I was there…. It was like a rite of passage for me 😂
But did you like it??
13:27 as someone who’s been finally winning against my own personal non mormon sugar addiction from childhood… this is a scary future prediction 😅💔
🥲😭
They are already at Dutch bros (coffee plus dirty soda) … very popular with teens too
I can see why it’s popular with teens!
Exact same thing as the ~2010 boba drink craze on the west coast. Caffeine + sugar + creamer.
I assure anyone reading this that getting addicted to caffeine is not a belief you can either have or not have. It is a fact that caffeine is addictive
This is sooooo funny 😂😂
This is so interesting because the only dirty soda I’ve had was in a town in Canada with a high Mormon population. I never considered the link
Ohh, a hidden link
What's with the coconut flavor? I noticed it's added to a lot of combination of drinks
It must be a preference
My theory is that it adds the creaminess they’re looking for in their Starbucks substitute while having a fruity taste that tends to mesh better with a lot of the soda flavors like Mountain Dew/sprite
I am not Mormon and never have been, and I love coffee. But I would totally go to one of these soda shops if they expanded into less LDS filled states. Just to have a different kind of business.
People buying soda know it has sugar, it’s not like people don’t know. So do starbucks coffee drinks.
They are already expanding to other states that are less LDS
As someone who likes to mix juices and sodas, I kinda want to go to Utah. Lol could you imagine a Starbucks that only sold dirty soda, lol I want to see that so badly.
Yesterday my doctor told me to let my smoothies "get warm" b/c cold is hard on my gut, LOL. Wait till she watches this!
Underrated video ❤
❤️😊thank you
I live in Indianapolis and our first Swig location opened here two months ago. But yeah... I also kind of love the sodas lol.
business is booming in Indianapolis, they've also gained a new customer in you 😌
@@Itsbabygirlt They sure have! Lol I just can't resist it.
As a (non-LDS) Utahn, soda shops are my freakin CULTURE man I love a lil sippy sip occasionally
Okayy, an organic fan! Enjoy
specifically the coconut creamer throws me off more than anything
Would regular creamer be more normal? Lool
I grew up in Utah, I went to a local arcade that had a soda bar, it was weird, but hey, vanilla mtn dew is pretty good
I’ve now got to try a vanilla mountain dew
These store would go CRAZYYY down in Mississippi!
really? Mississippi has a sweet tooth? 😅
I have a major sweet tooth but these crazy ass soda mixes are giving me an aneurysm 😵💫
There’s sweet tooth and then having a sweet mouth 😂
I wanna try it ❤
i like sugar. i like me a nice little chai latte. but man even i adjust my drink for less syrup or sugar free syrup. i like how in Boba drink shops or other Asian drink shops they let you choose the sweetness level. 85 Degrees has a delicious sea salt matcha latte and i get it at like half sweetness and it's so good.
I've never seen whipped cream on a root beer float or an italian soda but it has indeed continued my interest in these soda shops!
Really? I also never heard of Italian sodas until this video, but I had seen, heard and even tried root beer floats because of cartoons I watched when I was younger
You should give it a try, you might like it!
The dirty soda shop is an expansion on this concept.
interesting how long its been around then! thanks for the info
most of the dunkin drinks are used as a syrup tho you would mix some of it with milk and it would last you two weeks and you save a bunch of money
The fact that Mormon Heaven has subscription tiers is fucking wild to me.
There are levels to heaven and hell in Christianity too
Mormons biggest investment is in Pepsi company if I’m not mistaken, so ya not a bad “rule” to inforce
Ohhh there’s a rabbit hole
Oh my god I used to work at one of these! It was a soda shop and a competitor to crumbl cookie. I had no idea “dirty sodas” were a thing. Only a handful of the employees were mormon and they were pretty chill, I got the feeling she was only mormon because she was brought into it. I gained like 10lbs working there just from making myself soda potions. My favorite was cherry and coconut syrup with maraschino cherries with dr pepper or pineapple and coconut syrup with sprite. I would even make my own baja blasts. I miss working there it was fun but it closed down once crumbl cookie moved in :/
Reallyyy! what a fun place to work
Crumbl cookies are really taking over 🍪
1:41 fun fact: the Amish CAN drink Alcohol. You should watch Breaking Amish, its a TLC reality tv show from the early 2010s it’s really good!!
Not just soda… I was in UT in 2014 in the “middle of nowhere” and the Krispy Kreme donut shop had huge lines, too. Crumbl Cookie was also founded by two Mormons in Utah.
This is tea!
2:00 give me ALL the espresso shots
Yeah i forgot Utah existed, lets keep it that way......
Lol, just jogged your memory
@@Itsbabygirltmore like PTSD
Water Tok a few years ago with those insanely sugary recipes must have started in Utah too
Probably lol
