I just got out of the hospital yesterday with this diagnosis, I was treated with antibiotics and one surgeon suggested I have a drain put in. My abscess was 4cm, but when I went down to surgery; the surgeon that was going to do the surgery , did another CT and decided not to put the drain in, I’m feeling great, haven’t had any pain since the day I was admitted, I give God the glory, he was answering prayer!

I was diagnosed with diverticulitis in June 2020 which led to 6 day hospital stay. I also was diagnosed with an abscess which I also was given a draining tube. While I was in the hospital, I was given antibiotics and of course, a clear liquid diet. It was a very interesting time. And to add to the stress of being diagnosed with something I had never heard of, I could not have any visitors. It was the middle of pandemic. Fun times! I was discharged with the drainage tube and had several office visits with my doctors as well as another CT scan to see how much the abscess had drained. Even though my doctor spoke of surgery, I was not convinced that I truly needed it. The doctor told me it was totally my choice. By the way, I love my doctor! Nevertheless, I had the resection surgery in November 2020 and prior to that I had a coloscopy that came back normal. Yeah, 5 months later. That hospital stay I was there for 6 days. The first day surgery, I was gotten out of bed to stand by PT. The second day, after seeing the doctor, I sat in the chair the entire day until bedtime. I did not have to have Colostomy bag. After several follow up appointments, I am feeling better than ever. My advice for any one that receive this diagnosis, find a good doctor that listens to you, keep a positive and open mind, start moving as soon as you like you can after surgery. (After surgery, I made sure to take care of myself by bathing myself and going to the bathroom with minimum to no help from the staff). And I have not had any flare ups!

I was released from the hospital yesterday with a drain and antibiotics. However, once my inflammation has subsided I need this surgery. I’m more nervous about having another episode before I can get to my surgery date. What did you do to avoid that and how long before you could return to work?

I am having surgery in a couple days. A little nervous about it. I was first diagnosed in 2020 and had a few flare ups since. The last one in April included a hospital stay due to abscess. I hope this helps. Also hope it’s not as painful as the hernia repair surgery i had in February.

People this is no joke. My husband was admitted about two weeks ago after experiencing cramps for a couple weeks prior. He initially thought he pulled a muscle until he started running a fever and pooping blood when we rushed him to the hospital. Long story short he went from diverticolois to diverticulitis to peritonitis within 24 hours and was rushed to emergency surgery because his instine exploded. The next day he started bleeding too much in the tube and his blood count was low they did another CT scan to discover he was bleeding internally. They rushed him back to emergency surgery where they found his wound was bleeding and when they stopped that the doctor noticed that he was also bleeding and having blood clots around his spleen. The doctor examined his spleen and discovered it was cracked which led to a spleendectomy and because he lost so much blood he had 3 blood transfusion. So now he has been cut from his sternum to growing and has tubes and a stoma along with 1 foot of intestine removed.

Interesting video thank you very much. My case shows that the cause of diverticulosis is absolutely unknown: 40 years old. 185 tall and slim (74 kg) . Vegetarian since my life and consumed a lot of fiber. No alcohol and no nicotine. At 39 I first got severe pain and extreme discomfort on the left side! After 2 years colonoscopy made: Result: Pan-Diverticulosis . By the way, since the first attack at 39 I have permament problems with my intestines.

Thank you Cleveland Clinic. This video was very informative. I'm currently on my 17th day admitted in the hospital here in Boston. I've been here this long because my surgeon and I were making an attempt to not have the ostomy pouch. This is my fourth flair up over 5 years. I'm on Flagyl and Ampicillin. I enjoyed the discussion regarding wait time for surgery to allow the GI area to get a break. My surgeon is recommending that we do the surgery in 6-7 weeks. Thank you again.

Gee, my doc picked option D. All of the above.
I was first given the IR drain, stayed inpatient for IV antibiotics, and fluids.
One month at home with IR drain, then back to hospital for the scheduled laparoscopic Sigmoid colectomy/resection.
At initial CT scan diagnosis, I already had fusion of bladder and colon, and my abscess was described as a very large pus filled one. First course of action was to try to deal with the infection. That might have been the difference for me.
I am still in post ok recovery at home ... week two. Most pain has subsided, just the minor and occasional incision irritation pain.

You could argue that the benefit of one operation and no stoma should overweigh the option of early surgery during her second admission ( in the presence of pelvic abscess) with resection and ending up with a stoma lasting many months may not be acceptable to the patient. However if a contrast study during the first admission had revealed the sigmoid stricture then lap-lavage-resection and reconstruction would have been the best one stage option for the patient.

I'm not comfortable with this due to her having a drainage down her throat to stomach to suck out bowel that is not moving. I’ve been living on and off antibiotics along with Targin, Oxyconton for pain for over a year now. Each time I go off antibiotics symptoms such as fever, the sweats which I’m experiencing at this moment and feeling absolute lethargic to the point of being bedridden will ensure. After taking amoxicillin 875mg only will almost immediately these symptoms will disappear. It’s seemingly problematic in a Queensland hospital health system to have any helpful discussion with a surgical team. I’ve had many virtual CT colonoscopy which always shows the same constipation, diverticulitis to the sigmoid and the rest of the bowel. I personally don’t feel surgery and a stoma which is a 80% likely hood is the only option as I have a history of this coming and going like this for years however now it is chronic. I feel a Stoma at 54 is like a death sentence. A friend who with a stoma was just rushed into surgery because of an infection in his bowels, then a complication which required further surgery thereafter. It’s tragic! Big trouble 😥

My pain was the size of a quarter right on the inside of my pelvic bone on the left side. Of course it does radiate out. And left for too long it will take over the entire abdomen. But, that quarter size spot was undeniably the hot spot for me. It is a dull tooth achy throb to a nearly bending you over double pain.
I refused surgery for about 2 years and then I was begging for it. I had already had a total hysterectomy and my gall bladder removed. During my hysterectomy my surgeon for my resection actually came in and took pics. My uterus, ovaries, colon had so much scar tissue combined with endometriosis and cysts was causing tremendous pain. They took out 18” of colon, and my appendix. No stoma. I recovered very well. Diarrhea is still prevalent but none of that pain and sickness. Best decision for me for surgery. My surgery was in 2013

I have a stricture/narrowing from my first horrific extreme bout of diverticulitis many years ago. It's only a partial obstruction, but causes me no problems, so why should I have surgery? (I had a failed colonoscopy, that's how I found out I have it.) Not worried that it's cancer because I've had it many years, apparently. Only had one or two mild to moderate flairs since then, and no symptoms of cancer or other intestinal problems. Can't see how surgery would benefit me. (Though surgeon "recommended" it, I guess to fix what's not broken. He thinks it'll eventually become completely blocked, so recommended I have surgery now, before it can. Despite me having it for years already with no problems. Nope.)

Try 2/3 cup of FiberOne bran cereal every other day for the 1st 30 days, then 3/4 cup everyday. You will be amazed how that fiber acts as a gel and "pulls" food from the nooks of your colon and cleans along the way. Plus, the fiber helps keeps colon cancer away along with many other benefits. My surgeon started me on this after my 3rd bough of DD and I've been great since.

34 years old here. Got diverticular throughout my full large bowel. Have flare ups all the time. Very newly diagnosed. When I have flare ups my HR is over 100, goes between 100 and 120. Been back and forth to the doctor with pain, changes in bowel movements etc. Always been told anxiety induced IBS. Awaiting further tests, any ideas what tests to expect?
I had 11 biopsies taken during colonoscopy due to raised lymphoid , awaiting biopsy results

My husband had a diverticulitis flare up about a 2 weeks ago. He was feeling better but is now starting to feel like it is flaring back up again.. is this normal? I know it takes time to heal. But if it is starting back up again could there be more to his diagnosis than diverticulitis?

I have diverticular disease and this happened to me twice where i got better than a month later it flared up again. For me it is now happening more frequently so i am having surgery in December to remove the bad part of my colon.

All these doctor played with this patients life and stuffed around instead of getting it sorted first time with surgery. How do I know..well I had a abscess and it resulted in sigmoid perforation and soiling with contamination that nearly killed me.

I went through a painful episode last week. I have cut out all white flower and milk products. I was lucky it only lasted for 48 hours with the pain. I have previously been diagnosed with IBS, but I'm finding that it's a big guessing game with foods. I have also increased my water intake. Minimum 2 liters a day. I'm drinking keifer in morning. Eating pre soaked and rinsed oatmeal with fruit. I'm eating refrigerated pickles (no vinegar) and I tried kimchi yesterday, was pretty good. Fermented foods. Stay away from sugar. Have you applied for assistance? Or maybe Forward healthcare?

Maybe you can't do surgery while it's infected? Or... maybe the rule of thumb is to do least evasive procedure? Or... maybe it was ultimately the patient who decided what needed to be done?

It's not that simple. I had Diverticulitis & had surgery in August of 2020. I had it bad too. I've been wearing a Colostomy bag for 11 months now. It's been almost a year. Next month I can get a reversal & have this bag removed, but I have to have a Colonoscopy first, then the reversal surgery. My Colonoscopy is set for August 3rd 2021 @12:45pm. I can't wait. 😊
