You like severe weather. I suggest you find one of the documentaries on the 1900 Galveston hurricane. A storm so destructive that it motivated a city to raise its built up area several meters higher, houses, businesses, and utilities and build a massive concrete and granite seawall. No one is sure how many people died. Between 8,000 and 10,000. Afterward, a train finally made it to the island. Soldiers patrolled, summarily executing looters where they were found.

Greensburg is a special one to me. A lot of times whenever people say “the town was destroyed” it’s just hyperbole; a long track with major damage on a path and minimal damage in the surrounding area. No…. this LITERALLY erased the entire town off the map. Just gone.

My friend Kay is from Kansas, and I go up there with her every so often for her family reunion. We drove through Greensburg not long after is tornado leveled this small town. There was just row after row of nothing left but concrete foundations where businesses and homes once stood. It was completely eerie, and so sad. Went through there not long ago, and most have rebuilt. Shows the resilience of the human nature.

I performed land surveying in Greensburg for the city in 2008. I lived in Kansas all of my life and in 74 years I have only seen devastation like that twice and never as complete before. The town was simply not there anymore. Paved streets and concrete curbs but nothing else but shredded debris. The one that hit my neighborhood in Kansas City was bad and lengthy (+/- 30 miles and two river crossings) F-5 and left an extreme debris field but it was only about a quarter mile wide. Greensburg must have been more than two miles wide.

I live In Hutchinson KS, roughly an hour and a half away, and I'll never forget it. My family stayed there for a week helping with search and rescue and Clean up.. it was awful. It was truly the worst case scenario of any Tornado I know of, even if the death toll and property damage totals doesn't reflect it. It was not just a 2 mile wide monster, but it was completely rain wrapped, and even If it wasn't, it was at night and so large you couldn't have seen it anyway. Alot of people got very lucky they survived, and it's incredible that they had the town almost completely rebuilt in a little over a years time

TLDR: Got to Greensburg right after the tornado hit, got told to turn around because the town was gone.
I lived in Dodge city at the time for college. I drove through Greensburg heading to Wichita the morning of the tornado and saw all of the storm chasers on the East side of town and thought it was odd. I drove back the same night and had no idea I was driving right at the storm with some friends. We got to Greensburg about 10 minutes after the town was destroyed, the Sheriff already had the road into town blocked and told us the town was gone and to turn around. We tried to take some back roads North of town but there was so much debris and flooding we got stuck multiple times, I vividly remember pieces of house spread across the road and trees completely stripped with more debris lodged in them if they were still standing. We ended up back at the main road and headed back to Pratt to go North still following the same storm. After getting to highway 50 we started to realize how bad things were, the storm had caught multiple people on the highway sending their cars into the farmland. I always think about how close we were to being a part of this tornado and storm.

I remember being GLUED to the tv at 6 years old watching the news coverage of this from near Wichita (2 hours east of Greensburg). It was easily the scariest thing I had watched. I lived in a trailer/mobile home at the time and remember the hail sounding like it would burst through the home. This tornado solidified my fears of them for sure. If I recall now, they’ve almost completely rebuilt and are one of the most eco-friendly towns in the state, really taking “Green”sburg to a different meaning.

I'm from Kansas. I remember this night well. I was about 100 miles to the north camping at Cedar Bluff Lake that weekend when the line of storms rolled through. First time in my life I opted to lay down the tent, and go to the shelter. In the process of that, I took a piece of hail the size of a golf ball to the head, so I was driving through blinding rain, so much lightning that it looked like I was at a strobe light heavy rave, my own tornado to deal with in the area, and my cell phone going off from my mom calling to tell me about the tornado warning in my area all whilst seeing stars from getting clocked by the hail lol. Learned about Greensburg the next day. This was the first tornado to get the EF5 rating after they updated the Fujita scale.

@randallshuck2976 people need a roof over their heads!!! All the government rules/red tape/regulations are ridiculous!!! You honestly can't build an ef5 tornado proof house. Unless it's built like a tank bolted to the bedrock!!!
If builders in tornado alley would just automatically include a tornado resistant safe room in every house that would go a long way to keep people safer. But I doubt even that could 100% protect in an f5, but better than nothing.

I live in a tiny house in the woods about an hour south of Joplin. I doubt I would survive a tornado. 😂 But I’ve also lived in tornado alley for almost 44 years and have never seen a tornado. Thanks for the video. I used to live in the county just west of Greensburg. What I remember about the tornado was that there were some businesses and homes on the eastern edge of town that were not destroyed. They were next to the golf course and airport. The water tower above the Big Well was destroyed. The grain elevator was still standing and I think the courthouse was damaged. Everything else was destroyed. Greensburg lost about fifty percent of its population after the tornado. It used to have about 2,000 people 60 years ago; however, I think there are about 750 people today. People who decided to stay, rebuilt their homes in the "Green" style, or environmentally friendly. Lots of vacant lots today, though. Today, a person may buy a vacant lot and have a home built. That home can be on a concrete slab with one concrete reinforced room instead of a basement.

@@loribroadbent8573 it's 10:03 the storms are to the west of me but I'm watching the local continuous weather coverage a F4 tornado is hitting bartlesville Oklahoma at this moment. There is a storm cell developing just southwest of me I need to keep an eye on just a severe thunder storm for now I'm not under a tornado warning just yet but I'm ready to go to my storm shelter if need be I'm just now beginning to thunder far off no rain yet but the wind is getting a little stronger not concerned but watchful there will be a lot of damage just to the northwest of Tulsa Oklahoma with the tornado on the ground going through bartlesville Oklahoma but that's 100 miles from me

Hey Recky, are you gonna sell your home in Sweden, now and immigrate to Kansas or Oklahoma, USA? Just kidding, I used to drive truck thru that area and narrowly missed tornadoes. They be some scary stuff. BTW, an EF-5 tornado is capable of LITERALLY sucking the pavement off of a road. THAT my boy is POWER! I'm glad I live in Oregon, USA. Once in a GREAT while we have little (EF-1 of smaller) tornadoes. I MUCH prefer our earthquakes, forest fires and volcanic eruptions!

It might seem cruel but I'll ask the question.
How can you live in an area that gets struck the most often by tornadoes and not have a shelter?
And did I hear Dream Home?
    It's sad. What people prioritize.
Don't just have a shelter here in the Ozarks also have one in Arizona and even Colorado And that Ranch is over 8,000 ft. Two tornadoes passed by there within 3 Mi a decade ago. The basic small underground shelter can be installed for under $4,000. Less In many rural areas. That's real piece of mind.
Guess that's asking too much. People live on coastlines that constantly get hit with hurricanes and every time they run out and buy plywood to cover the windows instead of having real shutters.
Common Sense things we did decades ago eludes everybody today.
    🚜🤠🐂
