I consider pandemics as a natural disaster similar to an earthquake or flood. I don't see a problem with the government stepping in. I am appalled that some people decided that that ignoring a public health crisis was a hill that they were (literally) willing to die on, and take others down with them.
I know you say it wasn't a close election, but in the final tally the popular vote was Trump: 49.8, Harris: 48.2, so he won by 1.6 percentage points. That was the closest popular vote margin since Bush v. Gore in 2000. So it really was closer than people are saying, and it was no landslide.
Also... This country is still really racist and we need to acknowledge that to change it. Jon saying that it doesn't serve us to say we can't reach across the aisle when in some situations we need to admit that we can't, doesn't help us deal with reality. There are absolutely some people worth holding out hope for... It's just important to know the difference and act accordingly.
definitely agree that untangling the real stuff that gets mixed up by basic left/right labelling needs a longer discussion. while it's perfectly valid to posit "authoritarian" vs "libertarian" as one aspect of a political divide, I can guarantee that many many folks who are on "the left" would vehemently reject any identification with libertarianism. that's as far as I'm able to adress that - I'd appreciate some further discussions on this

Like Jon Cooper, I was raised catholic, left the church; unlike Jon, I am a senior citizen age 79, female. I am now a secular humanist type; I follow the teachings of Jesus, not because I think he is some god, or the son of god to get some after life reward. I believe Jesus was an amazing, teacher and philosopher as well as a social justice warrior of his time. Having gong to catholic school, I remember and still love the Beatitudes but have rejected the "narcissistic" version of god who demands to be worshiped less you are sent to be tortured for eternity. Began listening to New Evangelicals trying to understand how people who claim to follow Jesus could be in the megachurces of wealth hoarding con men, support Trump and the GOP. Enjoy your discussions.
Obviously this is my anecdotal evidence, but I strongly disagree with the idea that misogyny and racism wasn't one of the primary factors in Harris's loss. The people around me were saying things like "I just can't imagine HER leading the military. What a horrific thought" and things like that "well if Tim Walz was the top of the ticket I might vote for him. But I'm not voting for her" I heard that she was unqualified and dumb and when I pressed on why they couldn't tell me. I had several people tell me they just didn't like her. Something about her annoyed them so they weren't voting for her. I never, NOT ONCE heard people talk about the price of anything being a factor in why they voted for Trump. I live in Alabama so this is deep Trump country. They just didn't like her. They just believed that she's dumb because she's a woman. I can't tell you how many WOMEN told me a woman shouldn't be president. That they aren't capable. So unfortunately, I don't think there is a single thing that could have gotten her elected. And I love yall but I mostly hear this rhetoric of "democrats just catered to the wrong people" from white men. The Democratic Party has PLENTY wrong with it. I mean. It's an absolute embarrassing mess in Alabama and most of the red states have been completely abandoned by democrats... but downplaying the role of Russian misinformation, misogyny, and sexism in this race is so mind numbingly exhausting. Democrat men won in states that Harris lost. That alone should be a big ole red flag. Anywho. Love yall. Just a bit tired as I watch my personal autonomy slip away each day 😂

One could easily argue that when the Dems wouldn’t go in Bernie’s direction, the common voter saw that as a rejection of those ideas, and saw Trump as the closest best next thing. If Dems want to pull that block back, they must address the issues with income inequality. Maybe Trump letting billionaires run the government will help make voters see he isn’t who he says he is.
Dems were literally the only ones addressing income inequality. The issue I saw was the vast majority of media toe the GOP line and simply never honestly covered Harris and Walz or even Biden. Certainly not in the same endless way the rightwing media machine shoveled MAGA bullshit into the air.
