  • Lived here for almost 50 years, never seen this before on the Anchorage Hillside. Been around several days now.

Actually, seagulls are found even here in North Dakota. Heck, we even had them in the high deserts of Arizona! They are migratory birds, traveling anywhere there is food. That's why their nick name is "Rats with wings." To prove it's not global warming, Utah named the California Gull, commonly known as the sea gull, their state bird in 1955. And the early Mormons from way back in 1847, long before global warming, speak of the gulls at the Great Salt Lake. Lastly, sea gulls are found in all of the 48 states and Alaska. I would not be surprised if they live in Hawaii too.
They are both hunters and scavengers, making them a most successful bird.
True story, I use to throw bits of food up to the gulls at lunchtime while in junior high. One day I threw a chunk of cookie to the gulls. One dove to get it, misjudged the angle and it bounced off the bird's beak... It then hit the Vice Principal dead on the top of his head. He turned around with an angry look- trying to see who threw it.
Me and my friend got out of Dodge in a hurry. I am sure the VP would not have believed our story.
