      The Quota system was needed like it or not, because it essentially was response to an organization who had a whole white exclusive platform to start with.
      And just because the Quota system is in place, doesn't mean players are chosen only because of their skin colour.

      you can't understand the problem when others have an agenda to twist the facts of history and to deny and destroy the white people of South Africa...Apartheid wasn't the horrible situation people make it out to be many people thrived including blacks! crime was low everyone had access to education, jobs, money, homes a first world country now look at the state of S Africa. was there bad things in apartheid? of course but not as bad as they make it out to be it's been lied about and blown out of proportion. every country has problems and issues that should be addressed everything can be improved upon but the racism and hatred wasn't what it is today people actually got along better before allowing millions to immigrate from west Africa to South Africa. it could have been fixed before letting in people who didn't have anything to do with apartheid nothing to do with S Africa but were the very ones who began lying about it causing chaos,hatred, high crime and division of blacks and whites... guess who lied about the rainbow nation? yep there is no white in rainbows.
      the first step in fixing anything is the "truth" of apartheid the "truth" of history and not the communist version of apartheid and history...now things are what they are today white people are getting slaughterd at an alarming rate S A is in stage six of genocide all because their made to pay for the "lie of apartheid"... I doubt it can be fixed at this point not without a serious cleansing or civil war.

    The only aspect I can disagree with is the notion that Ashwin Willemse was a "fantastic" rugby player. He was just one of many who played for the Springboks after 94. Same as it is not Botha and Mallets fault that they played during the Apartheid era it is nobody's fault Aswin played during the quota era. If it is acceptable for Willemse to accuse them of being racists simply because they played before 94, then Willemse must accept that he will always be regarded as a quota player. The politicians gave Botha and Mallet the Apartheid tag same as the politicians gave Willemse the quota tag. If Botha and Mallet should have refused to play for segregated teams then Willemse should have refused to play for quota teams. Willemse rigthly deserves his quota tag.

    For the South Africans what are your views on the quota system for selection? Without it will black players be overlooked and marginalized or will South African rugby develop and select the best available players regardless of colour? I'm from New Zealand so i'm looking from the outside in but it seems the only way to avoid the stigma of being called a "quota player" is for the entire quota system to be scrapped regardless of what outcomes it might yield.

    • @ochrechap
      @ochrechap 6 років тому +1

      Alf Stewart I agree with u Sir. Scrap the quota system. The problem i have tho is tht whn it comes to selection, will the selectors be biased? Will they REALLY choose the best players, or select biasedly according to their own skin colour (even though quota is theoretically scrapped).

    • @johnarmstrong6940
      @johnarmstrong6940 6 років тому +5

      In a free market system combined with professional sport, the player who brings in the money through good performances will get picked regardless of color. Create equality of opportunity, not equality of outcome and the best will rise to the top regardless of colour. Look at American sports, African Americans dominate basket ball and football, yet make up only 14% of the population. They dominate due to their physical prowess, it’s simple. You cannot social engineer equity, there is no such thing. In the end the damage is done to those it’s intended to help.

    • @peternel257
      @peternel257 6 років тому +2

      I think ultimately the quota system should be scrapped. Its not fair on the talented black players that get picked but will always have the stigma of being a quota player hanging over their heads. And it is not fair on the talented white players that get overlooked.The changes need to come at grass roots levels with money being spent on providing underprivileged players access to fields, training and coaching so that talent is developed and brought through the schools into the professional arena. It takes time. If it was started 20 years ago we wold not have this problem now.

    • @joshuajacobs2306
      @joshuajacobs2306 6 років тому +1

      I definitely think it is an issue and should be scrapped because: well 1st off as many of my countrymen have said it puts an astrix next to the name of any black player to put on the Jersey I know everyone the legendary Brian Habanna(sp) was accused of it when he was selected when he was past his "prime" and thus I think for any black player to truly be accepted or remembered as "legitimate" springbok he would have to be an absolute legend (someone like Beast Mtawarira (sp) comes to mind). Also it becomes a worry to the players themselves as they doubt if the deserved it because of their talent or just got in because of their skin colour. Mkhaya Ntini (legendary cricket bowler) himself has stated that he had doubts over his own selection and he was amazing
      Then also raised by my countrymen is the fact that talented white players are restricted to become as there becomes such a bottle neck for top teir talent which is why the European leagues are saturated with SA players trying to get citizenship to represent other countries (Scott Speding, CJ Stander, Rory Kokket etc)
      And the last and probably most important one which for some reason everyone (including the IRB) over looks is that according to IRB legislation that formed in the apartheid time states that no country that has legislation that influences selection due to skin colour is allowed to take part in any IRB official games, records or tournaments. This is why SA couldn't participate in world cups etc during that time. So therefore due to the current quota system the boks technically should not to be able to compete but everyone turns a blind eye because it is taken as political correctness but is just blatant breaking of IRB rules.
      It obviously also impacts the bok performance because the possible team/squad (supposedly) is not chosen
      I hope this helped and made sense.excuse me if any of my English is incorrect or if a spoke a bit in a circle I tend to ramble sometimes.
      Be free to ask me any questions or reply I'd love to hear other people's opinionsand view points

    There are 2 versions
    1. Mallet asked the producer to let Ashwin do the opening remarks on the game because he did not get a change to speak after the Sharks game and he deemed it to be patronizing
    2. He wasn't in the studio during the game and had no notes on the game and they deliberately asked to let him speak first to expose him, as it happens a lot where Nic and Naas have to give their notes to Ashwin to safe the day. And the only way out was to play the race card.

    Couldn't agree more.
    Firstly I'd love to know the context behind this 'meltdown'. What was actually said to offend Willemse?
    Secondly, I don't care how offended you are, you don't walk off a set! You are letting down your team, camera crew etc and airing dirty laundry is incredibly unprofessional. You suck it up, do your job, and then confront the individuals OFF CAMERA.
    How can you slap SuperSport, your colleagues and the viewers in the face like that? You got offended, felt entitled, and walked off set during a broadcast. Surely that is a breach of contract and should be an instant dismissal.
    You, Mr Willemse, have just highlighted the BIGGEST problem in South Africa: SELF-ENTITLEMENT. You made it about race and automatically that should save you from being fired and prompt an immediate response about Nick Mallet and Naas Botha getting dismissed.
    For all the younger viewers, that see you as a ROLE MODEL, they too will see that as the way to treat things when they are unhappy about something. Instead of dealing with it head on, throw the dirty laundry all over the place and mentioned something about how you are being patronized and then say the magic word, "apartheid" and what ever you do then will be safe.
    You, Mr Willemse, have just created the notion that as someone of colour, it is OKAY to storm off publicly in a professional environment, nevermind how many people you let down, and what's more, there are people FIGHTING to get a job every day and you've just pissed all over yours, which by the way you should be HIGHLY privileged and grateful to have, because you felt offended. Being offended doesn't justify your actions and it doesn't mean you are right.
    YOU, MR WILLEMSE, owe Nick Mallet, Naas Botha, the SuperSport team and the WHOLE OF SOUTH AFRICA your deepest heartfelt apology and resign immediately.
    If it comes to light that there was indeed racist/patronizing intent - I'm happy to eat my words and apologize. But there is no proof as of yet.

    Now we know what happened. It was the physical email that Mallet sent to Supersport. Why did he not just say he did not want to work with Willemse? Ashwin found out about the email before the show, working with a person that don't want to work with you. The rest is on television. But, few things I would love to know from Mallet
    Did he see Ashwin incompetent?
    Why did he not discuss it with Ashwin?
    Why did he send a email to Supersport, knowing that it will get to Ashwin?
    Did he expect Ashwin to overlook the email?
    When you refer to quota players, it gives an indication there they were not selected by merit, rather skin colour.
    Lastly, with quota players a world cup was won or were the quota players just sitting on the sideline?

      is everyone here in denial? seriously? Apartheid is the beginning of all of this it's one of the biggest lies in S A history until that big fat lie is addressed nothing will be healed...white people are being punished in every way including an ongoing genocide over the lie of apartheid along with the lies of how poorly blacks and coloured were treated all based on lies.apartheid wasn't great and had big problems and I don't deny there were racist back then but nothing close to what is happening today and nothing that couldn't have been resolved among the people that's a normal healthy society to squash there differences among themselves. Apartheid was not how people portray it today not even close, so nothing will improve unless the lies are resolved with the light of truth nothing is ever one sided.

    Nick Mallett has never called Willemse a quota player on live TV. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have off set either (but if he did, then they should've settled that off air). As to them playing in the apartheid era : So what ? Are they responsible for the dates of their birth, which led to them playing their best rugby during that time ? Does that make them any less good players ? Ashwin Willemse surely showed his lack of emotional intelligence and immaturity of spirit. Why they didn't get him off air a long time ago beats me (he had shown signs of this insecurity before on air). I think : Good riddance, when I watch a sports program, I want to see professionalism (regardless of politics), and not listen to child-like mentalities.

    I don't know what to say, so here's an Apple pie recipe
    Ingredients
    Dough:
    2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
    4 teaspoons sugar
    1/4 teaspoon fine salt
    14 tablespoons cold butter, diced
    1 large egg, lightly beaten with 2 tablespoons cold water
    Filling:
    2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
    3 pounds baking apples like Golden Delicious, Cortland, or Mutsu
    2/3 cup sugar, plus more for sprinkling on the pie
    1/4 cup unsalted butter
    1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    Generous pinch of ground nutmeg
    1 large egg, lightly beaten
    Directions
    Make the dough by hand. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and salt. Using your fingers, work the butter into the dry ingredients until it resembles yellow corn meal mixed with bean sized bits of butter. (If the flour/butter mixture gets warm, refrigerate it for 10 minutes before proceeding.) Add the egg and stir the dough together with a fork or by hand in the bowl. If the dough is dry, sprinkle up to a tablespoon more of cold water over the mixture.
    Make the dough in a food processor. With the machine fitted with the metal blade, pulse the flour, sugar, and salt until combined. Add the butter and pulse until it resembles yellow corn meal mixed with bean size bits of butter, about 10 times. Add the egg and pulse 1 to 2 times; don't let the dough form into a ball in the machine. (If the dough is very dry add up to a tablespoon more of cold water.) Remove the bowl from the machine, remove the blade, and bring the dough together by hand.
    Form the dough into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate until thoroughly chilled, at least 1 hour.
    Make the filling. Put the lemon juice in a medium bowl. Peel, halve, and core the apples. Cut each half into 4 wedges. Toss the apple with the lemon juice. Add the sugar and toss to combine evenly.
    In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium-high heat. Add the apples, and cook, stirring, until the sugar dissolves and the mixture begins to simmer, about 2 minutes. Cover, reduce heat to medium-low, and cook until the apples soften and release most of their juices, about 7 minutes.
    Strain the apples in a colander over a medium bowl to catch all the juice. Shake the colander to get as much liquid as possible. Return the juices to the skillet, and simmer over medium heat until thickened and lightly caramelized, about 10 minutes.
    In a medium bowl, toss the apples with the reduced juice and spices. Set aside to cool completely. (This filling can be made up to 2 days ahead and refrigerated or frozen for up to 6 months.)
    Cut the dough in half. On a lightly floured surface, roll each half of dough into a disc about 11 to 12 inches wide. Layer the dough between pieces of parchment or wax paper on a baking sheet, and refrigerate for at least 10 minutes.
    Place a rack in the lower third of the oven and preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
    Line the bottom of a 9-inch pie pan with one of the discs of dough, and trim it so it lays about 1/2 inch beyond the edge of the pan. Put the apple filling in the pan and mound it slightly in the center. Brush the top edges of the dough with the egg. Place the second disc of dough over the top. Fold the top layer of dough under the edge of the bottom layer and press the edges together to form a seal. Flute the edge as desired. Brush the surface of the dough with egg and then sprinkle with sugar. Pierce the top of the dough in several places to allow steam to escape while baking. Refrigerate for at least 15 minutes.
    Bake the pie on a baking sheet until the crust is golden, about 50 minutes. Cool on a rack before serving. The pie keeps well at room temperature (covered) for 24 hours, or refrigerated for up to 4 days.
    Cook's Note: You may freeze the uncooked pie, but don't brush it with egg or dust it with sugar beforehand. Place the pie in the freezer for 30 minutes, to harden it slightly, and then double wrap it with plastic wrap. Freeze for up to 6 months. When ready to bake, unwrap the pie and brush it with egg and sprinkle with sugar. HBake, from the frozen state, until golden brown, about 1 hour and 10 minutes

    What actually happened; Presenter asks Ashwin for input- as usual Ashwin doesn't really have much to add apart from stating the obvious..he was lost for words ( something that Naas and Mallet don't experience ) mumbling and not being prepared- he then asks Naas for his opinion, hoping he takes the bait and Naas couldn't help himself..instead of Ashwin not taking himself so seriously.. he feels like a tit and pulls the race card, but in the back of his mind knowing fully well he's not a real analyst. It was a coward move! BUT he'll be praised for calling out a bunch of old white guys from the Springbok apartheid era. It is a case of feeling inferior when you're out of your depth. The clip starts with the chair asking Ashwin his opinion of the game. He responds by sarcastically trying passing the question to Naas who tries, humorously, to fend it off by saying he used up all the time before the game (Naas acknowledging by inference that he may have hogged the mike either on or off air ...)
    Nick then tries to shut the impending incident down by taking the ball away from both of them and provides - as usual - an articulate summary.
    Ashwin waits calmly - too calmly - for Nick to finish and then deliberately 'throws his toys on air. During his toy-launching fest, he infers that Nick and Naas are racist, they played their rugby during apartheid, that they called him a quota, that Nick was laughing at him but, most telling of all, that he is glad that this happened on air.
    The incident itself did not happen on air. His deliberate and racist response to whatever did happen was on air. He put it there.
    He should be fired for this abuse of his position as a presenter to hijack the LIVE platform for his own racist agenda.
    Should Nick and Naas be punished in any way, they should resign an d start their own channel or company. I would certainly support it just as I support the 1014 channel. I watch Nick and Naas because they are Nick and Naas, not because they are MNet.

      Shakiel Bapoo wow, really? You didn't perhaps notice that the sun was setting or did you just prefer to see it as players referring to blacks. You people will read racism into absolutely everything. Whites can't be confident & successful because to you that's "racist!" It really is truly pathetic, don't worry cupcake soon whites won't be allowed to play at international level so you can dry those tears. 100% black team, wouldn't that be great for you, no whites. But you black & so that isn't racism. Apparently

      He said they played during apartheid. He said that he is more than a quota and earned his respect. What is racist in his comments?

    • @HendriSchoeman
      @HendriSchoeman 6 років тому +1

      The mere fact that he had to bring up 'apartheid' and the fact they (Nick and Naas) played during that time makes it race based comment. The fact that he brought up "quota", which infers that he was labelled as playing only because of the colour of his skin, makes it a race based comment and already starts an "I'm the victim" thing. Let's say someone like Xola Ntsinga or Owen Nkomane (apologies if I spell these two *excellent* commentators' names or surnames wrong) was there, would he still have done what he did? No, he saw an ideal time to play the 'blame it on apartheid' card.
      I will be the first to condemn Nick and Naas if there was really something sinister going on (we'll have to wait and see) but regardless of what transpired 'off-screen', what happened 'on-screen' was completely unprofessional and unbecoming of someone on live TV.

    Look the sad thing is that he was (as good as he was) a quota player, just as he is a quota presenter, and I feel very sorry for those who really deserved to be in any position for that matter, and gets labeled a quota player. That is the danger of any quota system like affirmative action, and sports quota's, university quota's we will never know who really made it on their own, and who are just quota players. This also creates a false sense of achievement.
    Stop all quota's, then each one make it on their own merit. This will be fair to all.

    Hey Ranoldo, I just knew you were going to be on the ball, no pun intended, with this incident. I am subscriber because of your intellectual unbiased viewpoints which I have often said in your videos I agree with you despite us being a full generation apart. My 5cents worth - clearly Ashwin was upset, I could hear it in his voice. No we don't know what transpired before hand so nobody has the right to make any accusations regarding race or the analysts themselves whether you like their anayses or not. BUT I am here with one really overlooked aspect, the professional way the woman, should I ignite a rasist fact by adding her skin colour., handled the entire episode. Props to her, ma'am you deserve more recognition than being an anchor on Supersport Rugby. More than that it would be premature to add anything, but ensure that professional lady host gets acknowledged in her handling and defusing of such a volitile situation.

    The whole set-up was patronising: 2 white-haired white guys seated comfortably, young black guy ignored in the corner of the stage until, finally, asked for his commentary as a kind of afterthought. Even on a Supersport stage Ashwin was made to look like a 'quota' commentator.
    Ashwin. Well done for exposing the racists who are all crawling out of the woodwork with their digusting comments here. At times like this Im ashamed to be white.
    And, to the producer of this video, get your facts straight before you spin faster than Bell Pottinger: Ashwin DID NOT say he was called a quota player during this show. He said that he HAD been referred to as a quota player many times previously.

    The tree of multiculturalism is bearing fruits I see. . . Why do liberals believe that vastly different cultures and belief systems can live together in harmony? Where is multiculturalism working effectively where there are no severe problems? There are parts of Sweden - the most multicultural country in Europe - where you have the military and police patrolling the streets with automatic weapons to uphold the peace. There are frequently cases in the US where black Americans take to the streets and vandalise property and loot shops. Even on the African continent different tribes of people who look identical detest each other - ethnic cleansing is a word thrown around on way too many occasions. Multiculturalism is such a fallacy.

      The Thinker-You are presenting situations without giving context. The problem with promoting the opposite of multiculturalism is that you will have some idiot somewhere thinking they are the master race and actively oppressing people based on ridiculous assumptions. I have to agree with Peter Nel. Do you complain about other people of colour who stay around you on a daily basis? if not, then it is the media!

    First of all this has nothing to do with Naas and Nick .It's all to do with AW turning a discussion into a race issue .The hostess had no issues with Naas or Nick just with AW since she still states this discussion was going great until snowflake AW sulked like a 2 year old boy and was very unprofessional .The hostess was fine with Naas and Nick even joking with them after spoilt brat walked off like a kid on the play ground .Nothing to with race at all .Fact 1 Naas and Nick have been saying this for years about Quotas being bad for SA sport cause this is what you get from it ,insecure black players not knowing if they are in teams on merit or just to fill the quota .This has been discuss for years ,nothing new .NZ ,Aus ,Eng ,France ,Ireland ,wales ,etc have been saying this for years that it would destroy SA rugby and it has.Choose players on Merit not colour .Keep our stupid Minsters out of sport cause ANC destroys everything they touch .Now just look how AW reacts ,like a 2 year old child ,when his opinion is challenge ,he reverts to bring in race .AW was a good rugby player agree ,but this is all thanks to a terrible system create by a pathetic government party the ANC .

      mlungisi manzini agree but what has happened in SA rugby is that majority of talented players have gone overseas for better pay and quota system has forced them to do so .How many Saffas do you see in other countries national teams compared to rugby .France ,Ireland ,Wales ,etc .Doesn't matter the colour of skin this quota system seems to be failing in Rugby .How is it doing in Soccer aswell .Seems only rugby and Cricket get the neck of it yet other sports don't ,why is that ?.
