Something so modern-looking making such a classic sound feels oddly weird.

Thank you for your request. I no longer have the banjo. I really liked it but I came across a super deal on a Deering Midnight Special (has a tone ring) for about the same price I could sell my Deering Blackgrass for so I went for it. The Blackgrass did not have a tone ring but it was very resonant, had great volume and a sweet, mellow tone. The setup was perfect when I got it and I loved the cool look of it. The neck, frets, and tuners are all top quality, just like the higher priced Deerings. It also came with the railroad spikes which are needed if using a capo. I like that Deerings are made in the USA and the quality control is good and consistent. If interested in the Blackgrass, I would say look around for a deal because the regular price for a new one is high.
