Lex Vance hey put on some Vids man like them man !keep rocking dude some road music man a lot of road tech warriors will buy it 👍👍👍✊ you got music not like some crap we've to put up with some other channels don't wanna hurt their feelings they good techs but music n singing they should leave it alone phew!
Yea, I Remember the 80's ( well most of it ). I was a Night club photographer for a Mega night club in the 80's , I've thought about putting up the Wet t-Shirt contest / Club bikini contests on you tube. Some good stuff. I've got a Bucket of Photographs that I've not dug through in years. Those were the days ! 35 mm in those days. I think I'll put some up as end roll footage on some vids.
Saving for later when I can hear it without background noise.... thanks for sharing and researching part numbers, just by the visuals can tell there is more to learn.
Great video I switched to making all my fittings 2 years ago saves tons of money no buying fittings. I bought Hilmore hand swage and ratchet bender wish I would've done it years ago. 👍
I can recommend the Imperial gear bender for 1 1/8". Our straight pipe most be softer, its described as half hard pipe, as I generally never anneal it unless I an tweaking it by hand. One trick I was shown back when I was learning was once you have the pipe in the bender you want to bend, take another piece of copper that has been cut square, put it in the bended in the ninety degree position (so the cut end touches the side of the pipe you want to bend) you can then line up your mark with either the inside, middle or outside of the short piece of pipe depending on what measurements you are working to so you get the bend in the right place.
Nice work Dave. I recently got the Hilmor compact bender kit. After years of bending pipe. Nice to have leverage in the palm of your hand. Especially as one gets older.
I never anneal pipe, anything up to 7/8'' will bend ok...even hard drawn. You can get 1 1/8'' gear benders, they save a lot of time and it's fewer joints. I think you should have covered pipe expanders as well, but I appreciate this was a short vid but after bending there is always joining. Expanding soft copper is no problem, but 7/8'' and above you need to anneal if it's hard drawn, again not using a fitting saves another joint. There is a trick to not splitting 3/8'' hard drawn when you expand it...that saves a leak ;) But good vid, there aren't many explaining the dark art of bending pipe!
Nobody has videos on pipe bending. Especially Hard copper. Everything in the store is tubbing or aluminum benders and even the supply houses Locke and Grainger don't have hard copper benders. You can't find advertised hard pipe benders online and nobody will explain the difference on UA-cam unless you're diligent and put stuff together. I don't want to become a plumber maybe I just wanna make some weird shit at the lowest cost. Id like to learn how to do a cross over or long bridge. good tip to anneal the pipe but annealing softens the copper is that permanent? I was just gonna throw a spring in the pipe and use the imperial 370FH to slowly bend hard copper but if 1/2 - 3/4 can be done with just the bender; no annealing, that's better.
At work I have a nice set of Swagelok benders from 1/4" to 3/4" for high pressure stainless lines. At home, I have that bender you had on the far right and the slinky slide over ones for in a pinch.
Enjoyed, funny how I have most of the same brands of tools you use..Imperial tube cutters and benders and bernzomatic mapp torch head..must be an over 50 thing..
I seen to many videos .and is the best video .. now i need lucky in my old little car brakes lines is a ford escort 93 with 495k .. and run soft and don't smoke .. jjejejeejejejeje .. cheers
Really good video ! Very well explained. I Rock a Imperial small black bender similar to your one , 7/8" same one , 1/2" imperial smaller and different than your 1/2".
In Denmark, to graduate your apprenticeship, you have pass a test in bending copper. But most guys, who do installations use fittings, because it's "faster". But i do prefer bending over fittings. Because every soldering is a potential weak spot.
That was friggin awesome Dave!!! ThANKS!! Ordered the 370 from Amazon right before I found this again! We use the YJs in class, but I'm not fond of them, I'm going to see if the Imperial does a little better for me; I think the larger size will be awesome. The 470 was an option, that looks like a real competitor for the YJ with some additional features. Thanks for taking the time to go into so much detail. I enjoyed paying close attention to the color-change and when the black came in for ready-set-done! Again; good stuff. THANKS!
I thought that if you cool the pipe with water it rehardens the metal. Appearantly not though because you bent it nicely without kinks. Thanks for the demo
The 45° mark tip didn't work. I measured and marked 100 mm then bent the pipe, I then measured to see if my bend measured to 100mm, but it didn't. It was more. Is there a way to measure and bend in a way that if you measure for 100mm, you get 100mm after the bend too?
You can't bend hard drawn acr pipe. He took the hard drawn and by heating it (annealing) under nitrogen to avoid the scale, turned it into soft drawn pipe, which you can bend. So technically, if you ask your contractor or anyone else can you bend hard drawn acr pipe, the answer is no.
Two categories of copper. Soft and hard ACR tubing. Soft tubing doesn’t require annealling with heat. Sometimes, even old soft copper that’s been in the truck a long time MAY require preheating, especially when you try to flare the copper and it wants to split.
Nor-Cal Refrigeration & H.V.A.C ask for r250 instead of the r290, we are using copper here hecho en mexico! So maybe ask an other whole saler. Saves a lot of time, i even cheat with expanding the pipe
I never bended much pipe, but I laid a lot of pipe in my rock & roll days. Sweet vid Dave!
Lex Vance I played drums in a 13 piece funk back in the 90’s it was sodom and Gomorrah every night🤘🤘🤘🕺🏼
Gene K Right on Gene! All music on my channel is me singing & playing guitar.

Great video! I wish they would have taught pipe bending this way in my HVAC/R classes!
Thank you very much, you made it easy! Just line up to 45 rather than using imperials formulas that just confused me, and I'm a tech teacher.
Nice work Dave. I recently got the Hilmor compact bender kit. After years of bending pipe. Nice to have leverage in the palm of your hand. Especially as one gets older.
George W I hear ya there
Much appreciated sir man UA-cam is fucking awesome learning some tricks free of charge while enjoying my beer 👍
Hey Dave - great video, professional "old-school" of doing the job correctly. Bending pipe is a skilled art.
Saves so much time keep the tips coming Dave
Great I never known to line up on the back side of the 90 that's cool and will help me big time thanks Dave 👍🏻
One hell of a good video there, Mr Dave. Thanks so much for all the lessons. god knows i can use them lol.
drifter436 thanks for watching
Great stuff. Newbe here, and I'm terrible at bending pipe. Thanks for the tips!
Good tips for the new guys&girls starting out Dave.
Brad Goodale I hope it helps them a bunch.
yeah great little video for them good on ya.
Awesome! Guarantee this will be youtubes #1 video on refrigeration pipe bending!
Thanks for watching 👍

I like those benders Dave! Good video!
ComfortPlus Heating and Cooling thanks Chuck👍
Great Job thx for sharing!
Great video
nice tips cal-man
I’ve got that same table on my van. Love that thing. Nice vid.
John McMaster you need that and lawn chair. And you can chill anywhere 👍👍😆
Should the new guys invest in those compact benders like the hilmor or cps?
That's manly YES ! and I like it TOO !
pretty cool...some good info shared...me personally...i would only use a bender up to 5/8 max...fittings for anything larger #justsayin
kingofthecrease30 7/8” all day long.
Awesome video!! Great Teacher
I like that tip about lining up on the 45 mark. Sweet, I'm going to go ruin some copper until I get it right, THANKS
You gotta learn some how. Just don’t put all your mistakes in one pile. 👍⚡️👍⚡️
Really good video ! Very well explained. I Rock a Imperial small black bender similar to your one , 7/8" same one , 1/2" imperial smaller and different than your 1/2".
Does that 45 degree trick go for all benders?
Great video Dave. 👍

Thanks Dave , you forgot to mention that I suggested you do the pipe bending video! Haha just kidding.
Great video!
Mike Stevenson I new someone asked. See I do listen. And it was a great idea👍👍
Very helpful thank you

Great Video Dave on How to lay the pipe the right way 😂😬😄🤗🤭 JK on how to bend hard copper or ACR copper 😎
Felipe Tafolla 😂😂😂👍👍
Nor-Cal Refrigeration & H.V.A.C this emoji looks like you with shades on Dave 😎 no kidding
Felipe Tafolla I like this one 🕺🏼
Nor-Cal Refrigeration & H.V.A.C right on 👍🏼😀
I thought that if you cool the pipe with water it rehardens the metal. Appearantly not though because you bent it nicely without kinks. Thanks for the demo
johnmiller102 I cool it down with wet rags so I can get er done👍
best tip and trick for pipe bending, have someone else do it :))
throttle bottle you sir are a Genius👍👍
Thanks for the tips!

I had a contractor tell me its impossible to bend hard drawn acr pipe. I guess he never seen it done.
K Mech that how we run pipe. At least how I was trained.
I've never seen the adjustable type bender
I miss refrigeration. If it wasn't because of the hours I'd go back. But only wine cellars; cause that's all I'm familiar with.
The Air Conditioning Guy the hours are tough I just got home. It’s 9:20 pm. 😂❄️😂❄️😂❄️👍
Can the tubing be expanded by using this method?
Dennis Noone I think so.
Yes if you are trying to avoid using a fitting you can heat the pipe up and use the tube expander. Less brazing required
So you cool the pipe after annealing, then bend ? It’s not bent hot is my question.
Andrew Thacker yes you can cool it. So you don’t burn your fingers
Greetings from Argentina, you should always warm up before bending the pipes? good video

How to bend 3inches with 3/8 tubing at a 45 degree angle
Thank you
Ryan Baik your welcome
I rock the hilmor auto Bender!! BUT IT DAVE...YOULL BE DONE WITH ALL THAT...I WAS THE SAME..UNTIL HILMOR MUUUAHAHAHAHHA
HVAC/R DUDE no I’m staying old school 👍👍
👍👍
Dave, are you the owner of Nor Cal refrigeration?
Btw love your videos, 22 years in hvac/r and always learning.
Bryan Hoffman yes.
Hey, partner, can I buy one of your nor cal decal stickers from you???
jimbola77 the plain silver ones I put on the equipment?
I've never paid enough atention to the RADIUS lenght, key in benders for condensate loops. 🤦♂️
Where's the spring benders.
At first in your other videos, I thought you said "kneeled" not "anealed" or whatever the spelling is for that word
NSNOfm78 I can’t spell it either. 👍
Annealed (that’s the English spelling)
Never anneal just bend it, semi hard copper straight lenghts from 1/4 to 1-1/8
sjef oekel no semi hard in America only hard.
Same here sjef oekel, have done 1 3/8" with a stand bender without heating.
Nor-Cal Refrigeration & H.V.A.C ask for r250 instead of the r290, we are using copper here hecho en mexico! So maybe ask an other whole saler. Saves a lot of time, i even cheat with expanding the pipe
heavydiesel interesting🤔
