Time for Truth: Living Free in a World of Lies, Hype, and Spin | Os Guinness at Stanford

- Author and social critic Os Guinness describes why there are "thoughts that can be thought but not lived," asserting that the West has witnessed the end of the "heroic stand on truth" that was seen in events during the 20th century. | Stanford, 2002 | Explore more at www.veritas.org.
Guinness argues that truth is something which confronts us, causing us either to shape our desires according to truth, or to (try to) shape truth according to our desires, engaging in a thoughtful discussion that is relevant for seekers, avoiders, and even opponents of the notion of truth in our world today.

I first read the "Dust of Death" in 1976 and since then the message has not changed. "TRUTH" and TRUTH does set us free. "Well done good and faithful servant".
Wish I had had access to this sort of material when I was younger growing up in the church.
I likely would never have gone through many years of useless atheistic nihilism otherwise, before coming to my senses and eventually returning.
What prompted the journey back?
WOW! This is great! God Bless Os Guniess!!!
I read the book Time for Truth and highly recommend it!
I, as well, Gustave. "Time for Truth" by (the wizard of) Os Guinness is powerful. So is "A Christian Manifesto" by the brilliant (late great) Francis Schaeffer, a leader in the Operation Rescue Movement, Bryan Brown, referred me to years ago at a Pro-life seminar gathering years ago. The struggle continues.
So appropriate for today, especially what's going on in Washington. Truth no longer seems to be a make or break deal in this country. It's all about power and manipulation.
A profound lecture. Really applicable to our problems in Washington and the world.
Excellent- oh that we would all be passionate about truth.
"Character = who a person is when no one sees, except God" this quote made my heart leap for joy!
Voluntary confession is actually an act of extraordinary moral rarity. When a human being confesses, "I was wrong, I did wrong" we are going on public record against ourselves.
"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" So, if one: refuses to confess, rebels against confession, or rejects being accountable to confess because it makes him feel uncomfortable/threatened - can he be truly saved?
Actually, you can see character in a person's actions. I can see that you have none. ;-)
@@schmetterling4477 I suspect you are revealing a character flaw of your own in your baseless judgement of WK. Not to mention poor communication skills, apparently expecting us to be able to read your mind.
oops, where did you fly off to little butterfly?
@@donblosser8720 Anybody who wants me to sell a Nigerian Prince scam does not have character. Clear enough for you? ;-)
excellent talk
Os has always been a person of integrity since I first met him at Tayvallich,Argyll when I was a young boy having just been converted and he was then a student at L'abri with Francis Schaeffer. This video then is yet another display of his grasp of the importance of truth and his intellectual and panoramic vision God has granted him.
Wonderful presentation ! Thank you for posting !
"Blessed are those who search for truth for they are searching for God in Jesus Christ - and they shall find him, for those who search with all their heart shall find."
this would never happen now, which basically makes his point
Amazing!
Lovely! This started my morning out wonderfully!
Living in the world of lies can't trust nobody but myself
Look at America now. 11 years on. How does it look now?
The problem with the old brick campus is it lies on the terrible San Andreas fault.
Yes - that's true!
Truth is processed... before it's professed.
Truth is man's greatest possession.
Truth can hold its own, and stand alone.
You can lead a heart to Truth, but you can't make it beat.
Truth is a "crisis" of guilt, a "tear"
of contrition.. and a CURE for both
Wonderful word!! So very good to hear in a time where even my brothers and sisters in Christ seem to be willing to accept less than truth in politics. I say “love them but ask for truth”
The last time I have seen an honest Christian was... never. ;-)
Terrific
Lol. Nice 1 Joshua. Agreed!
Everybody believes in something, ...but not everybody's "belief" is something.
Truth is the first right answer.. and the last say.
That was great about how sometimes believers are followers in the dark, that somes up my faith.I don't have all the answers, there is a lot I am not sure about,But because I believe in Jesus,I trust God does know, and does have all of the answers.I am not good at putting thoughts into words, but that puts my thoughts into words that I have wanted to for a long time. Thank You Mr.Os Guinness.
Signals of Transcendence - the wish itself. Embodied in movies like Brigadoon.
Too a sane person that makes no sense.
Love is anything worth having that's RIGHT... and anything worth giving that makes a difference.
'Without truth there is only manipulation'. What are the options for those seeking and living truth, if truth Is not alive? Picasso's friends seems to have had no sense of self love. They were as mentally deranged as Picasso having had the freedom to walk away from him. Thank you . We must read the bible and choose what is right. There are no intellectual counsels against God.
(16:40) _Today it is worse to judge evil than to do evil_
-Os Guinness
(29:12) _Without truth there is literally no freedom_
(30:15) _The negative approach to the radical skeptic is as Peter Berger says, "to relativize the relativize-ers". People glory in relativism but if you look at their relativism there's usually a hidden double standard. They'll be skeptical about the past but not the present. Or be skeptical about everyone else but not themselves. In other words they don't apply the relativism to their own position_
(36:21) There was no cultural standard to judge evil so when presented the people failed the test.
@58:37, the question of the guy has to do w/ Jesus' claim:"truth will set us free" w/c is a biblical reference. Os should have explained it contextually fr. d Bible. John 8: 31-32" So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Meaning TRUTH is found in Jesus' words that we must abide. Ergo our philosophy & our interpretation of reality must yield to Christ's teachings. It is only w/ much difficulty to mean it other than what Jesus said.
thank you for traching us biblical truth and its application to life which is InChristJesus

Rod Sarmiento
Exactly Rod. Abide in ME and I in you. It's His WORD.
Simple really
Carry on Sis, u are on the right track. God bless...
In 95 I dedicated titanic to the queen and sixth sense to the members of parliament when I wrote them. I wrote 5 letters to people describing movies like miracle and saving private Ryan Eric etc.I talked to my friend Dave Lange who was assignment chairman for the no a and dedicated a football movie I wrote called any given Sunday and told him to write it down.I haven't owned a tv in over 20 years but I can't help but think now in chicago radio they are saying were a bunch of liars.
Truth rules when gravity wins.
I don't think I've ever seen a christian presenter make so much sense before. Not one mention of the resurrection.
It's a lecture, not a sermon.
It's implied. As when he mentions the false execution story from Guatemala and his subsequent description of widespread journalistic lack of integrity.
BTW, Atheists might gain a more respectful audience if they just weren't so annoyingly snarky.
What do you think I mean?
Why the lack of intellectuality these days in evangelism?
Selfishness and pride. How many people do you meet that genuinely want to use their precious time to investigate and do intense research on how to reach the world Maybe we do have intellectual Christians. But possibly their intellectual side is out weighing the “Love and compassion for the person who is questioning Christianity or raising objections. I know I was challenged when Ravi Zacharias said in the book “The logic of God”
He said, and I’m kinda of paraphrasing here, these aren’t the exact words. “There is a person behind the question”
We twist the definitions of things. Why? Because of pride and power, and ignorance too. I’d say those are the too. Ignorance and pride.
Why these days? People who believe in talking donkeys and dudes walking on water were never very smart.
And yet, here you are enjoying the benefits of a culture and society that such people built.
If he did his jacket up, he'd look like a pint of Guiness
Name calling what you do not know yet. Is not the truth. And because of the fact you don't know, how can tell the difference between thinking and knowing. Listen Louder is the action in to the power of prayer is words.
all truth is relative = an absolute truth claim. The end relativism is stupid, anyone who pushes it believes it objectively. Video has been shortened to 2 sentences.
Joshua Hults Your assertion is a truth claim and I relativize it to obscurity...
Brent Hendricks Is it objectively true that you relativized my truth claim ? LOL
+Joshua Hults Incorrect, else words have no meaning. The existence of truth is not part of a curricular argument: listen again.
Josh, your sentence proves your sentence invalid. I reject your assertion of absolute truth
Truth is an absolute, not part of a circular argument. There is no such thing as a 'relative truth' because that is an oxymoron.
Live free from lies: stop believing the utter nonsense of religion
Relativize the relativizers
?
Lol truth
You do not think? What the hell. Did you screw up your sentance I can't seem to follow.
Humbly ask Jesus he will respond
I asked him. He said that he is still dead and that you need to stop behaving like an abused woman who has been walked out on by her abusers in addition. ;-)
