VW Golf Mk7 GTD - Interior and Exterior lighting at night

- I now have a 2016 Volkswagen Golf Mk7 GTD (Right hand drive british version) In this video I go through the interior and exterior lighting to give you a sense of what the car looks like in reality at night. I am about to upgrade the halogen cornering bulbs to white ones to match the rest of the all white lighting of this high end Golf, so look for a video of that soon.
All the lighting, interior and exterior, besides the headlights (HID), and the cornering bulbs (halogen) are LED on the car, besides the glove box which for some reason is a normal yellow halogen light.

So much better than the 'standard' golf models. Prefer these rear lights but the front lights on the newer mk7.5.

Thanks! You'll be very happy with it I'm sure. Loads of gadgets and the drive is amazing for a hatchback, the chassis is wonderful and the grip and traction is amazing for a car of its category. I understand why the say the GTI is the best all round car in the world, when this is effectively the same but with a slightly different engine setup.

You won't be disappointed. 4 months and 2500 miles into ownership I'm still very much enjoying it!
+Danlat Picked it up today, I was advised by the dealer that they do not recommend any running in period any more so it's good to go straight out of the box. Were you told the same?
They didn't really say much about that. I drove it fairly easy for the first few hundred miles, more just for the fact I was getting used to the feel of the car and gearbox coming from something completely different.
There's sure a lot of lights, very nice indeed.

On the rear bench in the doors it doesen’t have ambient lighting?

I'll see what I can do! You wouldn't be disappointed, the drive is amazing, extremely responsive and once you're in the power band it pulls very well. Average 35-40mpg round town and 45-55mpg motorway. The level of traction is unreal, you can launch it round roundabouts at incredible speeds and the traction/stability control keeps the whole car in check. theres not much in the way of body roll either, the whole setup is very nice. And at low speeds, the steering is so light that its a doddle to park and maneuver. The manual is very nice and direct, but I think out of laziness and speed I will go DSG for my next car. The beauty of the GTD is that it looks very upmarket compared to most golfs you see on the road. If you see a GTD, GTI or R you always give it a second look, whereas lower spec golfs are just another car. I'll do a few more videos soon!

picked mine up few days ago. very pleased. its a mini rocket for the price, and helps identify all the muppets on the road as they either tailgate you or encourage you to race..duh!
.. has yours got a headlight level adjuster knob to the side of the steering wheel? mine doesnt have one and am trying to figure out how its possible to adjust them.
Definitely. Mine is stage 2 mapped and it wipes most boy racers off the planet unless they have a serious setup. I don't think there is any manual headlight adjustment, as I show in the video they self calibrate and level when you start the car, I guess that has something to do with the fact that they are adaptive and turn with the wheels. Never looked it up in the manual but I've been through all the settings and cant see anything about it. They seem to be becoming more common with the low prices and I've noticed they are very bright in the rear view when one is following me but not dazzling thankfully.

I have a 2015 Goof GTD, I never understood why VW didn’t make the sill trim, interior handle and door panel strip light up like it does in the front sill and doors . They could have made it an option if you wanted to switch those lights off if you didn’t want them illuminated
Mine has stopped doing the little light dance when i turn it on now ? Is this maybe because my cornering lights are blown at the minute ? Somebody help me out.
Just bought one of these. Tried foglights tonight and the passenger side fogs aren't working. Any idea how much they cost to replace and if it's easy to do? I know there's a panel in the wheel arch. No warning has come up though on the display...
Am looking to buy a GTD 64 plate, do they have standard sat nav, or is it just 65 plate onwards.
Sat nav was only standard as of 16 plate. Same goes for keyless entry and the winter pack. Both 64 and 65 plate these will have been options, so may be harder to find. A lot of the second hand ones I have seen for sale have these options though.
hey i have the exact same car but 2015 but when i unlock the car the lights don't come on only the interior ones how can I programme it so lights come on when I unlock it also only the driver side red lighting on the door works do you think the other door lights are broken or do I have to programme something

Nope, this is only on the golf R. The GTi and GTD don't have any lights behind the inner U.
I was thinking my 2016 inner lights were broken too, is there anyway to turn them on ? Maybe through obd 11?

Nice ! The lights on your car should be the same - the only mod I actually did was change the cornering bulbs to white ones after this video. Aside from that I have a DTUK tuning box which takes it up to roughly 240bhp and 400lb-ft torque. Really transforms the drive. I really wanted to do a front splitter and rear diffuser, but not got round to it so far.
Ah, where did you get the tuning box fitted? - haven't even had a chance to actually drive my gtd yet haha but I know that there tuning and remaps do a lot of good.
I fitted it myself, its a simple installation plugging a few things in the engine bay. Purchased directly from DTUK website. The beauty is I can sell it on when I get a new car next year. You'll like it a lot when you get it out on the open road. Its not quite got the dynamics of the petrol GTI but its not far off!
haven't event picked my GTD up yet, hopefully I won't be disappointed with the performance:( once I've adjusted I was thinking of fitting something similar
What car do you have currently ? I came from a 1.6 astra and it was night and day. Obviously you dont get the high end rev range but the torque is amazing. Mine can spin up in 2nd in a straight line in the dry no problem. The only things its missing is punch before the turbo kicks in and high rev action, but that is a characteristic of all diesels. For straight up brute force its excellent, and steering feel and dynamics are very good.
Hi Dan, you know the ambient lighting in the car, can you change the colour of the door lights and stuff. Or do they stay white?
In the GTI and GTD it is white, and blue in the R. You cannot change the colour unfortunately. I can in my new Seat Cupra 300.
Interesting video cheers. Is there an "headlights on" indicator light on the dash? My VW CC doesn't have one and when the auto lights are selected you cant see if they are on or not during daylight dull bad conditions. Most annoying!
Thanks! Nope, the Golf is the same. You can only see via the dial you turn when the dipped comes on as green, but even then you cant really see it in daylight so its the exact same problem. Doesn't bother me too much but would be nice maybe to see an overview of the lights on the computer under 'car' a bit like how the climate control menus are set up.
do all these lights come as standard?
Yes, on a UK spec Mk7 GTD this is all standard. This is a factory spec car with no options.
Will you be customising it?
No, I'm extremely happy with the car how it is. The only things I've done is change the halogen cornering bulbs for white ones (upcoming video), and apply a Stage 2 remap taking it to roughly 240bhp / 400 lb-ft torque. I also added a gold rear window sticker showing off my friends company, as he was kind enough to sort the map for me. Besides that, its staying this way till I upgrade again.

Dan Weatherley Personally I’d be looking for pan roof, love it on my cupra. You’ll find a lot of them are probably base spec from ex lease but thats not bad at all. From 2016 they got winter pack standard also. The cupra has been a blast but it goes back in December!
@@ItsDanLatham Ah yeah I've also seen that the 2016 models get a slightly upgraded base infotainment system (a clearer 6.5 inch display as opposed to the base 5.8" on the older models). I would love a 16 plate or newer but budget doesn't quite allow! I'm not too bothered about a sunroof personally - it would be a bonus but audio is more important to me and I usually just use air con :). Any ideas on what you're gonna get after the Cupra?
@@dweatherley Standard audio system is pretty decent to be fair! I have a fully loaded Mercedes E300 coupe on order for March next year, not sure if I'm going to stick to it yet due to changing work circumstances, but I need to seek a temporary car for the mean time anyway so expect to see some random shed on the channel!

I have purchased this gtd . 17 plate . The headlights are terrible . I had a golf years ago and had sand issue . Can the headlights be adjusted in anyway in the car computer settings . Thanks
Hey. I know it's been a while since you've had this but all vids are on gti's and American. Do you know if the mk7 led tail lights be coded to have sweeping indicators or do you need the mk7.5 lights?
bodz217 You cant no, you need mk7.5 for a proper sweep. You can set them the alternate between the two sections like pace lights, and there are modules that make this look a bit better, but its not the same effect. If you search ‘golf mk7 dynamic indicators’ you’ll see a few videos on the topic.
See how your mirrors unfold when unlocked, my gtd only unfolds once ignition is on, is there some way to change that or??
Its in the settings for the car on the touchscreen. Maybe it only works on models with keyless entry which was standard from 2016 on. Have a look it might be in there!
mines a 2013 with keyless too but only fold on lock, nothing in settings either smh, must be programmed that way

I just ordered mine. I wasnt sure about adding the sport and sound pack. Apparently, a speaker is fitted to the exhaust to give fake sound. Since I couldn't find out if the sound from that speaker was controllable, ie volume or on/off etc I decided to leave it incase it became a nuisance. Waiting for a build date now.
I know a guy local who has the sport and sound pack. It does sound a bit more throaty and good for what it is but being a diesel its not a hugely impressive sound - nice if your car has it but not worth the extra money in my opinion. The only other difference is red brake calipers. Diesels aren't meant to sound wonderful. I just make do with the rather loud turbo induction sound from this engine!
+Danlat yes, I was considering it mainly for the red calipers, which does look nice on carbon grey, as mine will be. But even without it, I love the look and feel of the car as it is. The turbo does indeed sound very nice when you put your foot down!
You could always paint them yourself. I was thinking of yellow for mine, which I think would suit carbon grey really well ! The look of the car is much better than any standard golf, really looks like an upmarket car. I prefer the front end to both the R and the GTI as well.
+Danlat definitely, the front end sets the car apart, and the standard wheels go so well with it,too, which is rare. Thanks for the tip, Im going to paint the calipers myself!
Definitely. I prefer the wheels to the ones on the R and GTI too. Although if I could have any, I'd have have the optional 19" pretoria ones from the R! No worries. I'm sure you'll love it when it arrives.
Does the MK7.5 come with pulsating taillight indicators?

there is no footwell light in a Golf?
the GTD, GTi and R all have footwell lighting (in the UK at least)
Are the footwell lighting for both front and back seats? They must be so dim that i cant see them in the video.
The camera doesnt really pick them up but you can see them IRL. Its just the front seats.
Golf mk7 has the sexiest meanest rear but lacks the front part, looks like any other car when up front
There was no lightning for the feet areas??
AKLF DB1982 there is in the front, it just doesn’t show up on camera very well as its deep in the footwell.

I'm pretty sure most things will be the same. I see a 64 plate one around my way often and the lighting is very much the same. The 2016 model has extras such as keyless entry, sat nav and winter pack as standard though which I think was all options before.

Thanks! Its very quick for what it is, the torque is impressive. I bought a DTUK Tuning box for it (stage 2 remap) to take it to about 240bhp and 400lb-ft of torque, and now its even better. 0-60 comes in around 6.5 seconds or less, You can still feel the torque when you put your foot down in 6th at 70. I'm in two minds about my next car though, either something a bit quicker and petrol for the longer powerband and sound like a Leon Cupra 290 DSG, or something like an A6 Black Edition to just cruise in. Always a difficult choice.

Lease deal was through Central Vehicle Leasing UK. £256 a month with no deposit. These deals are rare and only last a few months at most, and this one expired shortly after I got the car in 2016. I'm in the middle of editing a video on where to source the best lease deals, so look out for that !

As far as I know, the manual is not currently available, VW are only producing the DSG version. (although this will be the facelift mk7.5 model which has different lighting to mine in the video)
