I know a girl from highschool who had a similar situation like this once they were best friends for year's! And she started to like him so much when we got to 9th grade. But sadly the confession did not go as planned and they started to hate each other and joined different friend groups and he got with some not so great people they just were not nice. He didn't straight up bully her but him and his friend group were not he nicest people in school. They made up years later when we got into freshmen year of college and they were cool with each other. They ended up in the same college. And now they are married with twins on the way lolll

After reading the comments, I have to agree. Beyond that, why does he beat her to get her attention? All he had to do was tell her, how he felt. I think it’s really strange and a bit sick to write a character that thinks it makes sense to beat a person who they love if the person ignores them. Abuse is never necessary if you truly love someone.
