Ministry was the band that helped jumpstart the industrial rock genre in the 80's and 90's... combining metal riffs w/ electronic beats. They were a huge influence on Nine Inch Nails, Rammstein, Filter, Fear Factory, Statix-X, etc. 'Alien' Al Jourgensen (vocals/ guitar/ programming) is the mastermind of Ministry, and he's still making music today.
Check out some more Minstry - 'Just one fix' ... 'Stigmata' ... 'Thieves' ... 'N.W.O.' ... 'Senor Peligro' ... 'No W' ... "Let's go" ... 'Lies lies lies' 🤘🤘🔥🔥
I had Psalm 69 back in the day.....drove my roommates crazy with it.....I was an early morning headbanger
Everyday is Hallowe'en is a full on classic, and the newer acoustic version's pretty damn epic.
Whoever’s pointing y’all to these alt rock gems is on freaking point.
This track featured Gibby Haynes, the lead singer from 'The Butthole Surfers', on vocals. I would suggest 'Just One Fix' or 'Corrosion' from this album, or 'Let's Go' from 'The Last Sucker' album.
Gibby also sings this same vocal riff in one of the Butthole Surfers' songs
'Psalm 69' was my favourite track on that Ministry album. But I preferred their previous album: 'The Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste', in particular, the first song 'Thieves'... That was peak Ministry. Lots of great stuff on that album... Burning Inside, Breathe, Cannibal Song, Faith Collapsing, So What
Speed Metal!!!! That's why Lex loves it. The way her eyes light up when a proper Metal Riff comes on. She's Metal AF.
yeah, i feel like these two dont really belong together, shes way too much of a rocker at heart
“It’s vibey!”
“Is it? What vibe?”
“I don’t know. I’ve never met this vibe!”
I am on the floor laughing.
Thank you!
One of the best shows I've ever been to was Ministry in 1990. They melted my brain. The entire room was slam dancing. It was just a big, writhing hurricane of bodies. Ministry in concert is a wall of sound that never relents. It just rips you a new one and keeps on moving. Watch the live video for Breathe to really get a feel for it.
I like Ministry, not a favourite band of mine by any means but i dig them but yeah, live they are absolutely fantastic
I saw them on the 2nd Lollapalooza tour in '92. I ended up right in front of the stage - in the biggest, muddiest, and craziest mosh pit I've ever witnessed. (Good thing I was wearing boots!) They were probably the loudest and most relentless live band I've ever seen - and I saw Slayer, so that's saying something. Great show.🤘
Same here. I saw them in San Francisco in '89. That show still is in my top 5 all-time shows! So wild and fun!!
That's a trip to me the way you worded that, because as I was watching this I was thinking that it was like a "wall of sound" 🤘🤘
Was lucky enough to see Ministry, they put on a Hella of a show, & was the loudest band I've ever heard🤘 Next from Ministry should be N.W.O. Stigmata, Psalm 69, Thieves, Just One Fix, Breathe, So What just to name a few.
I always seem to drive 30 over the speed limit when this song comes on. Can't help it lol
You absolutely have to be careful driving while listening to them. I was literally doing 100 when I spotted the cop. Luckily I was able to slow down to below arrest speed.
I literally use the cruise control or I'd be dead! And it feels like I'm driving in molasses
I once listened to nothing but Ministry on a trip home from somewhere 90 miles away. I made it in an hour.
Normally, people remind me that I can drive as fast as the speed limit.
That's the Butthole Surfers vocalist on this song. They have much better songs BTW. Thieves, Just One Fix, So what, N.W.O., etc
Obviously your So What got autocorrected to Somewhat, but that's really funny. Like a much milder and more conciliatory version of the song.
@@Lusciouslysorry trying to imagine a milder version of that song and its just not happening lol
Lex gets it.
I listened to this almost religiously when I was a teenager... I guess you have to be a child of the 80's and 90's to really love this kind of music? Gah! Now I feel OOOLLLDDD😂
@@MostlyCloudy yep ,we are ..But we arguably grew up in some of the best music times ever !
@@feedthemachine99 I would have to agree 100%!! The music from our generation, and maybe the one before (Led Zeppelin etc) was the BEST!!! I don't hear as much music today that inspires me quite as much. But, once again, we're old now 😂
This is 100% Pure Industrial Lex.
Get into more of it
Skinny Puppy, is a great starting point
Yes, Skinny Puppy! I wasn't really into them much, but a girl I went to high school with liked them a lot. I wasn't real big into industrial, but I did like Ministry, and later, LARD (with Jello Biafra from Dead Kennedys on vocals). Anyhow, some of my friends were really into this genre...this brings back memories of my high school days!
This is one of my favorite music reaction channels! Y'all really do cover a wide variety of material from my teenage years! I love seeing younger folks reacting to "Gen-X" era music!
Keep up the great content! Y'all are the best!
In this episode of Brad & Lex, the intro immediately proves to be jaw dropping and spazzmatic on the Lexometer as she displays a multitude of emotions within quite a compact timeframe. She expresses shock, along with other undiscovered "vibes". Brad seeks an explanation but has to travel further for fulfillment on this fast paced chaotic quest. Lex fights to possess her own soul while her hands try to contain the speed demons within her skull while electrifying guitar shredding and distorted, low and chilling vocals totally take her over until they eventually exit. She will voice her enjoyment of the exercism in which Brad will respond with "ding a ling?"
I remember thinking a little while ago that it was insane that we could see this song on MTV in prime time hours. Before grunge and alternative hit in the early 90s you just wouldn’t see heavy stuff like this on MTV. Metallica wasn’t played outside of things like Headbanger’s Ball. And they weren’t played on regular radio at all. And then the floodgates opened. You still wouldn’t see bands like Carcass or Death in the mainstream but Marilyn Manson, Ministry, and Danzig got played, as long as they had some sort of “alt” credibility. But things just kept changing over the years and now I see all sorts of people liking thrash and old school metal and punk. It’s weird. It just wasn’t acceptable when I was in school and college. But I like seeing people appreciate the heavy as well as pop or hip hop. It’s all good.
Some great early industrial bands to consider are Nitzer Ebb (Join in the Chant, Getting Closer, Murderous), Front 242 (Headhunter, Welcome to Paradise), and My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult (Kooler than Jesus, Sex on Wheels). So much slamming awesomeness. If you like Rob Zombie, I think you'll really like Thrill Kill Kult... absolutely influential!
Would also add to this awesome list Skinny Puppy (Warlock), Cabaret Voltaire (Sensoria), and anything by Test Department or Swans.
This is a great song tearing down the highway doing about 100 or 120 mph
It was always great to hear this performed live -- the whole crowd would scream the part, "I wanna LOVE ya!"
Just saw them last month, after not having seen them since the 90’s, and they go harder than ever. Al Jorgensen is a machine!
@@brianmckay9472 That's good to hear! Man, now I feel like watching In Case You Didn't Feel Like Showing Up....
@@OneThousandHomoDJs yeah seriously one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. They’re coming back this way in March and already grabbed my tix!
Ministry, along with KMFDM, My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, etc is part of a pretty consistent work playlist
The fable is Ministry took LSD while recording, Gibby Hayes wondered into their session and asked if he could sing. He supposedly made up the lyrics on the spot.
Wouldn't be surprised. Didn't they later spend like 90% of the budget they got for Dark Side Of The Spoon on drugs and booze?
I remember seeing scenes from one of their DVDs back in the day where Al is shooting up heroin live on camera while laughing. Wild band. Great tunes as well :)
It's a very good song to listen to while on the treadmill. It makes me go faster.
This is still one of my favorite songs. It's utter nonsense lyrically. ❤️ Two of the best guitar solos ever in one song! So glad you guys did this one.
...the story goes that Gibby the lead singer for the butthole surfers came into Ministry's recording studio stone drunk and started blabbing "ding dang dong etc and they had him sing it to this song they were working on - great job again!
The story behind that song is amazing. The singer from another band ( the buttholes surfers ) made his way in the studio where ministry were recording. He was so drunk he had to sit down. He sang Thoses lyrics, then the minstry singer mixed the rest of the song and jesus build my hotrod was born, basically by accident.
"It's like Static, X and Crack like all in one" or whatever you said at the end right there is accuracy defined, THAT'S why I love y'all so much!
Watching Lex's reactions was pretty much how I felt when I first heard this 20 years ago. She gets it.
Lex "That's fire"
Brad (side eye) "Really?"
That summed up the entire thing
The funny thing about these guys is their first album “With Sympathy” sounds like a Duran Duran record.
Yeah,... They should react to "Work for Love" right after this.
Lex would probably hate it though - it doesn't rock hard enough.
Ministry, also one of my favourite bands, remember being on a concert of them and my ears sqeaking for 3 days after it. Not music for every day but an experience everyone should make. That song is perfect for german highways or driving to work very late, it speeds you up, it's weird but fantastic. Love them, because they are pure energy, thanks for rating.
I love this song. Gots love Ministry!
This and "Just One Fix" are IMHO the best songs on this album. But my two favorite tracks have to be "Corrosion" and "Grace". They are so anti-commercial and closer to the noise genre than what could be considered radio-friendly.
"Scarecrow" never gets any love. It's my favourite, but I think this whole album was pretty great. Ministry's best.
And the b side "Fucked" is great too. There is s great fan video for that fucked song.
This band is crazy, seen them in concert a few times, long ago. They started as a synth pop type of band, then turned into this.
Much like early NIN, pretty hate machine then broken and downward spiral.
Finally...a reaction video to the brutal greatness of Ministry ..there is plenty more...From Everyday is Halloween to Flashback to So What to their version of Supernaut to their version of Lay Lady Lay...trip down the rabbit hole y'all!
one of the things I love about your channel is you are not shy to listen to anything. This isn't the first Ministry song I would have recommended you both listen too ( my favorite song is Stigmata ) but thanks so much for this reaction video!
Awesome band. Seen them live and was blown away by that wall of sound. Check out ‘NWO’’ ‘Just one fix’ and ‘Thieves’ please. Really great songs too!
I saw these guys with Helmet and Sepultara in like 91 or 2. The crowd was composed of 55% long haired metalheads, 40% neo-nazi skinheads and spattering of punkers. When Ministry took the stage, all hell broke loose for 90 minutes as metal and skinheads fought each other all over the entire place. It was bloodiest most intense show I had ever seen. It was awesome. Check out Thieves, Burning Inside, So What (live), Stigmata and N.W.O.
That sounds like an amazing line up. I’ve seen all of those bands separately, but I think my head would explode seeing all that in one night.
“ FIRE !” Indeed! Check out : “ So What? “ by Ministry . And for something chill and obscure , check out :” Minor Flaws” by WORK DRUGS
I used to have a quart of Jesus Built My Hot Rod motor oil. It was a promo item from a college radio station fundraiser. I think it ended up in my lawn mower.
During college, I jammed this album in my cd walkman all the time. Once in the cafeteria, I had set my walkman next an El Salvadorian exchange student/friend to get a drink refill. After some small talk, I told her I had to go to my next class. As I was walking, I fired up the walkman and found there was no CD inside. For two weeks I wondered where it went until I met up with her again. She had put my headphones on to see what I was listening to. When Ministry started up, she was so shocked that she took my CD to "save my immortal soul from that devil music". She ended up giving back my cd and to this day, it's still one of my favorite albums.
Never heard them before but I'm with Lex. That was 🔥
One of my favourite bands as a high school rebel... they were awesome live too... check out "Just one fix", "Stigmata" and "Dead Guy"...
Industrial Rock at its finest! Spazzy, vibey and beyond. I always liked playing this before a business meeting to get me amped up. Lol 😂
Yeah, this is fire. When I was a Dj in the nineties this tune would fill the dance floor every time. This is even the gentle version. For full effect you have to hear the 12 inch version.
The vocalist for the gibberish was Gibby Hanes of the Butthole Surfers!
Nice nice nice! Been waiting for some Ministry here. As others have already mentioned N.W.O. and Just One Fix are also great songs. I saw a few comments here about how loud their shows are. I've unfortunately never seen them but whenever a conversation turns to "the loudest concert" it's usually them in the top spot!
Banjo metal!? You are a genius of music Lex!
When you're ready for more from Ministry, check out "Just One Fix" and "N.W.O." among others.
Goddamn I love this song. I've never even knew the lyrics. It was more fun not knowing to be honest.
If there's one thing I've learned from all the lyric videos they watch here, it's how absolutely worthless the lyrics are in most rock.
Ministry Rocks! But it's fun to listen to their early 80's sound (synth-pop) as well...it is SO different to this later industrial sound.
Effigy and Work for Love were on Muzak in the early 90's when this track was in radio rotation. Massively different, but Everyday is Halloween was sang live a couple years ago. ua-cam.com/video/QorKFQ50ZK0/v-deo.html
There have been references in the past to their label Arista Records wanting With Sympathy to turn Ministry into "the Wham of the United States." I'm guessing Al wasn't too thrilled with that idea.
Ministry is sort of a weird band, but in such a good way. I listened to this album a lot back when it came out, and also "The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste".
The Redline/Whiteline version is my favorite version of this song. Featuring audio clips of an obscure Brad Dourif movie called Wise Blood. A great line from The David Lynch Classic Blue Velvet is neatly tucked into this song.
It's the energy of the song that makes it good. This is something that you jump around to or if you are driving a car, it will make you go fast.
I love how Lex was banging and Brad is just like “.. okay.”
Loving these 90s rock reactions.
Try Primus - My Name is Mud
Thieves and Liars by them is sick!
Lex had the correct take when the beat dropped. "I kept getting shocked." Yep. That's Uncle Al and crew.
Now go listen to Everyday is Halloween and have your mind totally blown
I used to street race to this song in the 90s. Lex gets it.... it's a vibe.
"That's a drug I'm not taking!" cracked me up!
Legend tells that Gibby stumbled into the studio one night drunk and said, Fuck it, hit record 😂
From Lex’s first impression-the very first facial expression-I was like, “wait, have they reacted to any Ministry yet?”
Well, if y’all haven’t I am gonna recommend checking out “Just One Fix” before moving on to any of their other songs.
Ministry, Pixes, and Primus. You have definitely started exploring new types of music.
Pure energy. Love this song. Bang my head throughout. How could you not
This was me and my girlfriends song to get ready to go out in the 90's. TURN UP!!! The only black eye I ever got was at a Ministry concert. Fighting in the girls bathroom🤘
I’m so glad you guys found this song. Reminds me of my high school days. If you ever need to outrun the cops this song will come in handy.
Remember dropping a tab with friends in highschool and taking this album home and putting headphones on in the dark and cranking it ....scared the shit outta me!😜
Psalm 69 and NWO should be your next cuts.
Oh my goodness, thank you so much for this. Best belly laugh I have had in a very long time. Love the reactions to this. If ya really want to feel the vibe of this or any Ministry song I highly suggest driving fast on a highway at night in the summer time with windows down stero cranked.
The radio would usually play this song just before or just after Primus' "Jerry Was a Racecar Driver"
Killing Joke is a band that influenced a lot of industrial, though they are very hard to pin down with a label. Keep an eye out for them! Most people will say "Eighties" because Nirvana ripped it off, or "The Wait" because Metallica covered it.
Loved those guys; same for the Wipers from Seattle. Nirvana covered their song "D7"
@@timleary9537 Will have to check out The Wipers. You familiar with Die Kreuzen?
Do more MINISTRY 🤘, they are all over the sound scape. Twitch is a older album, but pretty solid in my opinion. Not so metal, more Synth pop electro industrial.
I've NEVER known the lyrics and have always loved this song. It's more about the vocals than the lyrics
Love some Ministry!!!
Just One Fix is the other Ministry song you should react to.
Lex you were born at the wrong time - you'd have loved all the early nineties metal and industrial clubs! Guest singer here is Gibby Haynes from the Butthole Surfers - who did their own version too! As stated it's not 'one of their best' but certainly stands out and will always remain one of my faves by them. There's a few you should check out by them, but also check out The Revolting Cocks, who were much better than Ministry IMO - but share some history...
“We’ll that’s a drug I ain’t taking”….hahahahaha. So funny.
I just saw Ministry last night and now I’m watching this! Lex, you have officially met the Ministry vibe! Now catch a show if they come near you. 🤩
If you're jumping down the industrial rabbit hole
KMFDM is definitely a band you need to check out
For starters I suggest the song Krank(album version not video version)
You will not be disappointed 🤘😝🤘
Love KMFDM...gotta hand it to any band that can make the morse code version of their name into a sick beat
I love you two. Brad you always kinnda look confused by some of the song and Lex is always all in and up for anything! Love you guys!
You folks finally dived into Ministry. Rock on!!!!!
Listen to Just one Fix
Not the best track off that album, definitely listen to the rest. Ministry is loosely defined as industrial, along with Nine Inch Nails and White Zombie at that time.
I used to keep a boom box on top of our Bradley's turret back in the 90s. This and Korn's Blind CD got lots of play time..lol
Saw Ministry at Lollapalooza '92, at Irvine Meadows Amphitheater, with Lush, the Jesus and Mary Chain, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Ice Cube, and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers headlining. Tool was at one of the side stages, but in '92 they were not well known, so I didn't see them live!
LOL - I love Lex gets so electrified!!! So much energy in that song, I love that song!!! :D
Honestly, this is the first time I’ve watched one of your reactions at full volume… Ministry and Clutch on the same day? Hells yeah! Gimme some MO!
OMG. Rolling laughing. Brad like, "... gurl, WAT!?"
Meanwhile, I'm over here with Lex. That's my favorite Ministry song (followed by Just One Fix).
Hey, Lex, find yourself the Redline/Whiteline version. It's a longer cut. You'll love it.
That was absolutely amazing.
Poor Brad.
I always love watching Lex react often with surprise. Facial expressions are so cool.
You guys did another one off my list! Thanks for checking it out :)
Lex trying to catch the beat was like a puppy tasting a lemon! So funny! Tunnnee is banging!
I knew their reaction to this one was going to be priceless. 😆 Another awesome band!
Yup, this is what I grew up on. Great for skateboarding and snowboarding.
We use to listen to this full blast before motorcycle racing back in the day.
For Ministry My personal favorites from around that era is "Just One Fix", "Thieves" and the other I really like when I am driving is "So What"
Seeing them live back in the 90's was an experience.
Lex, you just experienced this song almost exactly how I did (I saw the orig. video) while watching Headbangers Ball on MTV in maybe '92 or '93. Probably 1am on another school night
Lex: "I've never met this vibe!"
This vibe: "Because you weren't ready until now. Now that we've met, prepare for a whole different experience in music."
Industrial Records was a recording label in the mid-late 70s. The bands that primarily recorded there, Throbbing Gristle, Monte Cazazza, SPK, Boyd Rice, Cabaret Voltaire, set a sort of aesthetic for the genre that became dubbed "Industrial". From that, over the course of time, bands like Ministry, KMFDM, Laibach, Front 242, Skinny Puppy and Frontilne Assembly took that aesthetic and developed it into what is now known as Industrial metal, and have been the major influence on bands like Rammstein, NIN, Static-x, Fear Factory, and even that dipshit Marylin Manson. If you are truly committed to music and it's evolution, I personally suggest going all the way back to the beginning and listening to the evolution of this genre. It's a dark, heavy, and beautiful experience. I feel very fortunate to have been on this ride since about the mid 80s.
As far as this specific song goes, Gibby Haynes, the vocalist for The Butthole Surfers is (allegedly) drunkenly performing vocals for this track. It was originally just guitarist Mike Scaccia, and drummer Bill Rieflin fuckin' around playing as fast as they could. But, Uncle Al asked Haynes to perform vocals for them. Ultimately resulting in this beast that you just experienced.
Sorry for the long-ass comment. I'm a music junkie/nerd and can't help myself.
It took me a few listens to some of their songs before I could figure out if I liked them or not. They are a very strange band, but they're also fun. Brads face during the song was priceless, I thought he'd be confused by them and I figured Lex would like them.
Gibby was wasted drunk when he did the vocals on this. And you mention drug...Well, Unkle AL (Ministry front man) was super doped on heroine in this era too (he's clean now).. Still came out pretty killer. Love Ministry RIP Guitarist Mike Scaccia
Kudos to you both for reacting to Ministry, one of the more underrated bands in alternative music. I would love to see you react to More of them and would say their earlier stuff might be easier to start with:)
Hahaha 😂😂😂 this is a perfect example of the two reactions to ministry... Brad is like wtf is this and lex is like oh hell yeah 😂😂😂! Banjo metal 😂😂😂
This song actually got decent air time in main stream radio back in the 90's. Such a great time to be a teenager.
i called teenanger
It got serious airtime in my house in Australia. Not sure about the radio.
Could've fooled me, I never, not once heard this song on any radio station at any time and I'm grateful for that. This song is annoying and ungood...
