Honestly it would completely depend on the gimmick he was given. I could see a scenario where if he was given a lame gimmick, or lack of faith by Vince, he could be just another guy today. If you need an example, think Bobby (Robert) Roode. Great look, good worker, they do nothing with him.
Also, don't underestimate Bobby Heenan's impact on Rude's career.

    • @rawsko0316
      @rawsko0316 3 роки тому +10

He had a womanizing gimmick for awhile, the heat on that alone these days would definitely get some attention if done correctly. But if it was WWE writing it would probably go over like a lead ballon.

Re: the Rat Pack; I think Corny was confused, at first, with Mr Olympia, Jerry Stubbs, who turned heel in Mid-South and teamed with DiBiase. Jerry and Arn looked a lot alike and Arn teamed with Stubbs as Super Olympia, at one point.
Rood came into Georgia, under his birth name (Rood) sometime around the debut of the Road Warriors and was skinny as all hell and was being sold as a champion arm wrestler. Rude was green as hell and not great shakes in the ring; but, by the time he was working Memphis, against Lawler and Idol, he had really grown as a worker. By the time he had left the WWF and was working in WCW, he was one of the best in the business.
Ed Sharkey's guys were all great weightlifters; but, they never learned to wrestle until they got into the territories.

If you listen to Arn's Podcast, Bill Watts was sending Matt Bourne to GCW and Junkyard Dog pointed out that Marty Lunde looked like he was an Anderson so Watts sent them as a tag team. When they arrived Ole came up with Arn.
It wasn't Continental and Ron Fuller - Arn was in Pensacola working for Bullet Bob Armstrong.

I'm always skeptical when Brian says "We have had a lot of people sending in messages about this" as it's more likely it is something he thinks will get a lot of hits on youtube. I have sent loads of great questions but they never get replies and certainly not shout outs.

@@hattorihanzo2275 Certainly my questions may not be as good as I think. Here was one I did recently- Subject: Did Yokozuna do a Banzai Drop on Vince McMahon's voice box? (I always try to put a good subject header in to catch Brian's attention and to have him immediately understand the content of the question.
      My email then went:
      Dear Jim
Do you have any idea why Vince McMahon's voice has a rasping almost muted tone now? He sounds like he has had surgery on his throat but I have not read anywhere about this. He sounds like Yokozuna once did the Banzai drop on his voice box! It may also account for the permanently watery eyes he seems to have now too. Any reason's for Mr McMahon's dodgy larynx would be most welcome.
      Keep up the great work
What do you think? I think that would have had a very entertaining answer by Mr Cornette. Thanks for the reply Hattori

The more I look back at NWA stuff (Stampede Wrestling was the closest thing I experienced as a kid in the 80s in Canada), the more mixed my response is. Sure, there was a lot of great stuff that went on in JCP. But the promotion that was supposed to be about serious, reality based wrestling had a number of guys with facepaint who walked out to the ring like real life cartoon characters, which I thought the NWA was completely against. Obviously, things changed after Ted Turner bought the company and you saw a lot of cartoony stuff because Turner owned a lot of classic movies and some idiots decided that creating wrestling characters based on some of the characters in some of those movies was a good idea. But even before that, the Road Warriors/LOD, Sting and others all became popular in NWA/WCW wearing facepaint. To be successful as a wrestling promotion, you need a booker who understands psychology and someone who understands the culture and can deliver that booking and psychology in a modern, contemporary way. The early 90s were a terrible time business-wise for wrestling because the world was changing and wrestling barely noticed. They saw that hip hop was popular, and without actually understanding why that was, they just brought in bad wrestlers because they could say yo baby yo in a way that convinced southern kids under the age of 10. Wrestling at its best is believable. Even though you know it's a work, you don't want to see something obviously fake. It's same reason rational adults don't typically watch animated films. Even though you know it's a movie, it should at least be somewhat believable.

Totally understandable for Rude not to be able to follow Dennis Condry. Sharkey never taught the Minnesota crew shit, he was no trainer. And there was no mat in the basement of that church they worked out in. ( or ring ropes)
Rick had the body and the charisma and could talk. He just needed the reps in the ring working with professionals like Bobby Eaton and Dennis Condry. Two of the greatest wrestlers ever and a well-oiled machine of a tag team.
But once Rude got to WCCW in Texas he had those reps in the ring and nobody could touch him.
Rick Rude and Razor Ramone were my two favorite wrestlers of all time.
