Many thanks for this wonderful tutorial!!!! I had avoided taking this on, but after two very expensive failed attempts to fix the problem, I succeeded 100% because of this video. One minor suggestion. I tried to fit in the white clip after I screwed in the new piece. I couldn’t get it to go in but then unscrewed the piece and it easily went together. Again, thank you 🎉
Hi Nathan, love your videos fantastic job. How do you open the X5 door when it won’t open as in the it’s closed and the Doorhandle is stuck up and the interior door handle doesn’t work
Great tutorial, I really appreciate the time you took to put it together. This job sucked, I finished it and everything works so I'm thankful for that, you had such clear instructions thanks. There are some ways to make it easier but without doing it you'll never know. Now I know why my mechanic wanted $700 to fix it. I was about $100 all in after buying the part I needed and a couple of the tools I didn't have. I stripped the little bolt inside the door to remove the handle, that caused a nightmare for me. Thanks again for posting this. A+ Video.
Nathan thanks so much for taking the time to post this. No chance would I have worked out that external handle twist it pull it bop it stuff. Many thanks you saved me loads of time and money . Now I can have beers in the garden
7:57...easier to take the lock cylinder part off/out first. it's easier to get to the bolt on the longer piece if done the way I suggest. 16:35...same thing as I wrote above. easier to put the longer handle section in first and then put this smaller section in/on afterward. 16:40...nathan just made my point.
What is the "scanner" you talk about before removing the air bag. If i need to disconnect the neg. battery post. Should i discounnect from the battery in the truck or .... thanks for these how to videos, they teach me how a blue collor guy can keep his Beemer looking and driving like the Ultimate Driving Machine. Even a 2002
The right passenger outside door handle mechanism broke on my car. Also, the childproof switch was enabled, so there was no way to open the door from the inside or out. I found a youtube video with a guy that successfully removed the door panel even though the door was shut. It took me hours, but eventually I got the panel off and was able to open the door. Now working on getting all the parts and getting it back together. Thanks for all the help. The video(s) are really helpful.
Do you know if this a similar problem with E66? Right now I cannot open the drivers door from the outside. Comfort Access works fine also the inside door handle works fine. Thanks.
thanks very much was very helpful mine wasn't broke just needed lubrication on the springs and the working parts. so try that before buying a whole new latch
Nathan, thanks for making this video (and all of your videos). I busted my driver door handle yesterday morning when it was 12F here in VT after it was warm enough to sleet the night before - I immediately ordered a new carrier off of amazon for less than $40 with next day shipping. It was your video that helped me know what I needed to have on hand in order to get this done in the parking garage of my apartment building. For anyone doing this in cold weather - the vapor barrier sticky glue isn't so sticky, its hard and takes a whole lot of convincing. Thanks again man, much appreciated.
If you leave the key out of the ignition and the window is up, you can disconnected the airbag without causing the airbag light to come on. Do not put in key again till the airbag is connected
Hey Nathan, can you just unbolt the airbag and hang it up out of the way to do this? It's a pain removing the tire and everything in the rear just to unhook the battery. Thanks
Nathan, Thanks for the video. I successfully put anew part in the left front drivers door and everything worked. However, about aweek later, the right rear passenger door wouldn't open from the inside or out. It's unlocked but pulling either lever doesn't do anything. I can't take the door liner out becuase the door won't open. Any clue???
Hello Sir, I had the same issue: door handle in same position, but passenger side, and broken just like yours was. I replaced it. Made sure the ball/socket was attached, all of the screws are in place, I triple checked my work. Closed the door, tried to open it... didn't open. I looked into the door and you can see that pulling the handle is engaging the members within the door, but it's not opening. It will open from inside, but not outside. I'm at a loss and would appreciate any suggestions.
I replaced a driver side 06 X5 3.0i last year this time and a few weeks ago the cheap metal frame snapped again. I didn't buy an OE part and highly recommend that you do. So instead of waiting or buying another, I used .098" SS wire to fix the upper loaded spring area from pushing out (the cause of the limp door handle).
Good point! I did notice the angle after replacing the first OE part. I was going to machine a better assembly but talked myself out of it. lol I think the DIY wire will do the trick. It's a cheap thin wall casted part, loaded with a torsion (spring steel) spring + the constant yanking on the handle is only a matter of time in my opinion. Great job on the videos man!
Thanks! I air brained it by thinking I had to pull up on the door skin to pop the fasteners instead of pulling towards me. I broke the door skin LOL. The upper piece is glued to the panel and I broke that apart. :) Other than that, yep.. it's a complete pain in the ass but I made it happen! It actually went back together pretty well considering but one day I'll either glue that piece back on or go to the junk yard and get a whole new panel. Either way, I can now open my door with the handle instead of having to use the key to roll all the windows down / open from the inside. Thanks again!! :D
Thanks for that Nathan very instructive door handle fixed, but one thing you don’t have to take allan screw all the way out it just needs to be loosened a few turns, thanks again
@@sk4rtu925 when outside the car, hold down the unlock button until the windows go down. Might take 6 seconds. Hold the lock button for 6 seconds to close
Ha. I'm on about 6 weeks doing that exact thing. I want to give this a go but I have Parkinson's and I'm afraid to drop that screw on the side of the door that holds it in there. Am going to get price today to see how much they want to do it. If it's more than $500 I will give this a try first. Lol.
Hi Nathan - Thank you for the video, very complete. I followed it to replace the drivers side frame on a 2003 X5. Here is my currently problem. When I drive the car and it auto locks, I cannot then open the driver's side door from either the inside handle or the outside handle (all other doors work). Before driving the car the drivers door both handles work to open the driver's door. The key unlocks all doors. The inside central lock - locks and unlocks all doors. The driver's door actuator works and the stem lock moves up and down. But the door remains locked. Any recommendations?
I just change the inside part like you did. But my door still won't open from the outside..but if I go inside and push the mechanism for the outside the door will open...
Dude, you forgot to put the nut back on that secures the door handle to the mechanism. its a 8mm nut towards the rear of the door handle on the outside of the door. ( found at the rear of the handle and the actual door lock cylinder. )
I have this same vehicle with the same problem with both door handles on the driver's side. Now I know what I need to get them repaired, thanks to your video. However I'm in a bit of a dilemma. My key is useless because my battery is dead. I can't get the battery charged because I can't get in because of the broken door handles. And nobody around my neck of the woods seems to know anything about bmw's. I'm at wits end
Question for you, there are two green wires twords the top of the door that go behind or by the tweeter (small speaker). The two wires aren't connected to anything on my x5, do you know what they goto by any chance? Someone rewired the speakers for some odd reason, and I'm guessing they goto the speaker or the rear view mirror. But I can't find anything about it. Any help would be amazing Great videos too, you help out a ton. Cheers 🙂👍
Well, I had replaced the carrier on my X5 but used a different route when putting the handle back on. 1. do not put the lock cylinder in 2. lift the small holder that holds the back of the handle in so the front pops up a bit then you can put the handle in at an angle and twist up. it's much more easier then trying to fight with the lock cylinder when it's in place. so far I had to change my carrier 2x because the aftermarket one broke.
I cannot get the actual outter handle to stay in when I insert it into the hole and twist it upward into the notch and put the nut on. The handle just pops out of the one side upon tightening the nut. Any thoughts......
Push the metal frame to spring forward from the back (inside door panel), this will give you the little room needed to get those handle tabs in. Be careful they can strip easy after, keep an eye on that. Hope that helps :)

It locks and unlocks but as said will not open with either handle, the external handle feels broken, I have managed to remove the door panel with the door still closed but don't know how to proceed or open the door. Hopefully someone can suggest pulling a cable to release the door?
it seens like the cable unhook out or broke does it open from inside handle?? if it opens means outside handle is broke, if u already open the panel see if u can look inside to check if door cable its attach to actuator handle
What if you have the inner latch disconnected. The outer handle ofc is broke. You have the inner panel loose but not off & your sister pushes the door closed?
Can't place the ball into the socket, apart from that it is okay. I will give it another go tomorrow. My fingers are too sore, I probably need some pliers
I got it working by using long nose pliers from the bottom whole of the door. I didn't realise that I had to use the other hole to hold the pliers and with the other hand holding the ball pin. Also, don't turn your car on without the air bag or you will get a airbag light on your dashboard panel.
