Using S Video mixed with composite was giving me a video image that was good but faulty with a scaler, so I got the original S video wire made by Nintendo for the N64, and the image is better than the Mix s/composite cable without being faulty using the scaler, using it with my snes, and the video image looks perfect, with beautiful colors.
@RetroGameCouch 3:12 - Why does she have red body color on the right side (your S-Video cable)? It is a kind of bug in game or something wrong with this cable? Do you use S-Video socket in your TV or do you use SCART socket insterting SCART Connector with S-Video socket in it?(I mean - do you have "direct" S-Video input in your TV or do you have to use S-Video through SCART connector?). My analog Sony TV has 2 Euro - SCART sockets in the back. The first one supports RGB (not S-video) and the second one supports S-video (not RGB). So if anyone of you want to use S-video without having S-Video socket in your tv: you have to make sure, that your SCART socket supports S-video signal (check your TV manual). ALSO 0:45 - composite cable CAN TRANSMIT 576i resolution (PAL standard). The same goes with S-Video. This comparison lacks RGB SCART cable. Gamecube and Wii - PAL versions - have composite, RGB, component (not S-Video) and GC and Wii - NTSC versions - have composite, S-Video, component (not RGB).
If you can get the GameCube S-Video cables from Monster Cable the quality gets another little bump. It's not mind blowing, but it is a little clearer than those S-Video cables shown.
Does scart use S video? I noticed a massive difference going from rf to scart with my n64. I couldn't make out any enemies in goldeneye even with a 32" trinitron 😂. Still contemplating an rgb mod though
@@RetroGameCouch well I already have the insurrection industries SCART cable (US manufacturer) the console and what costed more was the USPS shipping from AZ to NY
While this looks pretty legit, the real question is how? Is it like with NTSC SNESs and SCART, or PS1 and RGB, where it just needs extra capacitors and cable circuitry?
technically if you're in europe, can't you just go for a N64 Scart cable and get a scart to hdmi converter, which overall ends up being the same quality than S-video and cheaper?
because Scart is better than S-video, also cheaper to get, and to record footage for example you'll always need to convert the signal to HDMI. So Scart to hdmi ends up being cheaper and better than s-video to hdmi
The best the pal console can do is a cheaty s-video. Scart can do composite, s-video and rgb. It won't all of a sudden make your pal N64 output rgb. It will be s-video (but more probable composite) over scart.
What about 21 pin SCART connections (without mods)? I'm sure I used a 21 pin SCART connection on my N64 back in the day and it gave the best image of all the regular options at that time (it's possible I had to plug that three cable connector thing into the back of the SCART connector first and then plug the SCART connector into my TV), even better than S-Video as I recall.
I need to inform you that using the SCART-adapter makes no difference, it's still composite. The SCART-adapter works as a pass-through, and if you plug composite-cables into it, that's what you're going to get, it doesn't enhance the video.
Yes, my Sony TV has S-video, Component, Composite and HDMI ports. It's a beast! If you want to upscale s-video to HDMI I highly recommend the RetroTink2x. Check my review on my channel.

Hello! Do you think it is possible to scale the signal up to HD but with the correct ratio? This means black on both sides of the screen, but i really prefer the original and correct ratios.
I don't think most TV's have s-video, so you will need an upscaler. I also used a cheap upscaler to capture the footage for this video, but it still looks a lot better than using composite.
did consolegoods reply yet? i hit him up on ebay and asked him to respond to my email. his name is Rob and he says he has been struggling with the lockdown. anyway got my cable in a few days after sending him £10 on paypal. so i can vouch for his business.
I just purchased the N64 again with the normal cables but I think the graphics are a lot worse than what I can remember from playing back in the day. I am assuming this is because of the new(er) smart TV. I noticed that there are also HDTV HDMI Cables that directly link the N64 to the TV. Would that also be a good option or does it still make a big difference by using the S cable as mentioned in your video? I have also been thinking about buying the expansion pak but I mostly play mario kart and I dont think it will make a difference for that game? Any insights would be appreciated, thanks!
If you get this svideo cable you also need an upscaler like the Retrotink2x. But you could also get the eon. This plugs into the back of your n64 and gives it hdmi.
@@RetroGameCouch much appreciated, have bought the RetroTink 2x mini just now :-) Quite expensive including overseas shipping so I hope this will improve the visuals 😁
When I was doing research into the PAL N64's output, I read on several sites that S-video will not work properly with a PAL N64. Nintendo removed some component somewhere and the result is that S-video is oversaturated and produces too bright an image. Is this cable you're showing a cable that actually adjusts for this?
Usually if you use a composite cable or S-Video cable for a UK/PAL N64 the picture would be to bright, however, I bought a re-wired S-Video cable from ConsoleGoods.co.uk that tackles this & gives a great picture over composite video.
Gran vídeo! , hay muchísima diferencia entre los dos cables me gustaría poder volver al 1996 y poder tener una Nintendo 64 con el cable s vídeo y disfrutar de todo otra vez. 😍
Cool video, hi, so what if my TV doesn't have an S-Video option? I bought a AV to HDMI converter for my N64 console, so I can hook it up to my Hisense Roku Smart TV to play the N64. Im trying to play Goldeneye 007, & its extremely dark in the background, & almost impossible to see certain aspects of levels during game play? Im looking for a solution to this please, thanks man 👍🙏😎 The AV to HDMI converter has both 720p, & 1080p setting switch on the converter. Which setting is best for my situation? Should the switch on the converter be on 1080p, or on 720p setting? Also, whats the next option after that, for adjusting the darkness setting for the TV picture, ,& for the ingame picture settings? Thanks a bunch 👍🙏😎
Make sure the TV is on the Game setting if it has one to reduce lag. To convert Composite, svideo or component to hdmi I recommend the Retrotink2x. I did a review on that.
@@RetroGameCouch My US N64 wasn't modded since we are talking about back in the 90's so sure it was just composite over scart, but since it was over scart, it gave a notable improvement in picture quality compared to s-video. Don't ask me why but it was a well known fact back in the N64 days that Scart was the way to go.
I live in Sweden we have PAL here but i have imported a NTSC consoles because PAL games are so damn slow. Who even wants to play PAL when you can get the games NTSC for the same price often cheaper?
Wow, my pal N64 is just dumb. I bought generic S-Video cable from Ebay, soldered required resistors and capacitors, and dot crawl is still present... :v Anyone had this problem before? I simply don't want to waste my money on another S-Video cable :/
Dizapku There’ll still be some dot-crawl, as the S-Video combines all chroma information into one cable. However, much of the rainbowing and some of the dot crawl will be reduced with S-Video.
No, NTSC N64s doesn't suffer from this issue. S Video doesn't produce any dot crawl Funny thing is that I have dot crawl on s video on every TV, but when I used scart connector on my other display, dots turned into rainbows (visible on edges). It's still not correct S-Video signal, Nintendo just f*cked it. If I were you, I'd check on other TV if you have dot crawl effect. From my experience, rainbow effect = somehow filtered dot crawl.
I'm here cuz I've been fighting with issue since 2016 or 17 and I finally found solution: • First, you need to dissasembly your N64 and verify the motherboard's revision. Only early N64's can output S-Video (except the french ones). Supported revisions: (P)-01 and (P)-02. Later ones requires modding (quite hard), RGB will be much better option in that case. • Then you need to open up the cable's connector and reseat the ground pin. For some reason, N64 has two ground pins. Ground pin number 6 is for audio and composite, pin 5 is for S-Video (or just for chroma, this needs to be verified). • Component's order matters! 75 Ohm resistors first, then capacitors. • Rainbow effects: check if your TV supports S-Video over scart, your adapter might require rewiring. S-Video over scart is not a standard thing and many TV's don't support that, look for alternative wirings. Also, don't bridge pins 15 and 20 on the SCART! S-Video wires cannot be bridged! • Bonus tip: you can use some insulating tape inside the AV plug to cover the composite pin. Or just ground the composite pin for safety. • 2nd bonus tip: clean the entire N64 motherboard. • Needs to be verified: capacitor's voltage. I used 6.3v caps. S-Video does NOT introduce any artifacts like dot crawl. You should get a good quality, perfectly stable picture. Also, S-Video leads with additional composite connnectors are fine as long as they have a separate wires. Don't waste your money on overpriced PAL N64 S-Video cables, It's just milking people who cannot solder themselves. Making custom cable is easy and cheap. If you seriously want to spend so much money, get RGB mod instead. Nowdays every N64 can be RGB modded, It's cheaper and better.
@@RetroGameCouch what about those SCART adapters that have S-Video input? Would you reccomend it? I'm thinking of doing it since I don't wanna shell the price of a console on an adapter

The Body Harvest result was most likely due to the developers targeting assets for composite. You can't polish a turd....s-video ain't gonna do shit if your textures are low-res to begin with.

Hello! Do you think it is possible to scale the signal up to HD but with the correct ratio? This means black on both sides of the screen, but i really prefer the original and correct ratios.
Yes, check my video on the retrotink2x. ua-cam.com/video/q4091D5RJA4/v-deo.html
Hey, whats that beat in the background? Sounds really cool :D
Found it! ua-cam.com/video/ekpKe0t-MOI/v-deo.html
Is this for use on today’s HD TVs? Or should I get a hdmi converter?
I don't think most TV's have s-video, so you will need an upscaler. I also used a cheap upscaler to capture the footage for this video, but it still looks a lot better than using composite.
It's been two days and had no reply yet from the seller from that site. What kind of business is he running man
Same here, been five days and no reply?
did consolegoods reply yet? i hit him up on ebay and asked him to respond to my email. his name is Rob and he says he has been struggling with the lockdown. anyway got my cable in a few days after sending him £10 on paypal. so i can vouch for his business.
Hi there , you played on a crt tv right?
Yes. But regardsless of the type of screen, s-video will look better than composit.
@@RetroGameCouch
Of course .
I have a pal one too and but i wanted to know how would a modded rgb compare to S video on a Crt
@@RetroGameCouch much appreciated, have bought the RetroTink 2x mini just now :-)
Quite expensive including overseas shipping so I hope this will improve the visuals 😁
@@JAYSYNTATIC Trust me, it will. I just got mine and its crisp on my LCD tv =)
When I was doing research into the PAL N64's output, I read on several sites that S-video will not work properly with a PAL N64. Nintendo removed some component somewhere and the result is that S-video is oversaturated and produces too bright an image. Is this cable you're showing a cable that actually adjusts for this?
Exactly.
Usually if you use a composite cable or S-Video cable for a UK/PAL N64 the picture would be to bright, however, I bought a re-wired S-Video cable from ConsoleGoods.co.uk that tackles this & gives a great picture over composite video.
@@RetroGameCouch
Have you looked on ConsoleGoods.co.uk?
I always used my GameCube video adapter
What does that have to do with an N64?
I meant i used my gamecube adaptor in my n64 since its the same connection but the gamecube one is better
It doesn't do component. So for an unmodified pal, s-video is the best we get.
How old is chaozz?
Hahaha..
Gran vídeo! , hay muchísima diferencia entre los dos cables me gustaría poder volver al 1996 y poder tener una Nintendo 64 con el cable s vídeo y disfrutar de todo otra vez.
Im looking for a solution to this please, thanks man 👍🙏😎
The AV to HDMI converter has both 720p, & 1080p setting switch on the converter.
Finally a new video :D
Yes!!
PAL units also had S-Video output
Scart gave the best video output back in the day - for my US N64 anyway. Way better quality than S-Video
Only if you n64 was modded to output rgb. Else it was just composite over scart.
@@RetroGameCouch do you connect all except the yellow?
I live in Sweden we have PAL here but i have imported a NTSC consoles because PAL games are so damn slow. Who even wants to play PAL when you can get the games NTSC for the same price often cheaper?
Composite at 2.52 she looks fine. Then the s video at 3.02 she's all red what's going on there.
Wow, my pal N64 is just dumb. I bought generic S-Video cable from Ebay, soldered required resistors and capacitors, and dot crawl is still present... :v
Anyone had this problem before? I simply don't want to waste my money on another S-Video cable :/
Dizapku There’ll still be some dot-crawl, as the S-Video combines all chroma information into one cable. However, much of the rainbowing and some of the dot crawl will be reduced with S-Video.
No, NTSC N64s doesn't suffer from this issue. S Video doesn't produce any dot crawl
Funny thing is that I have dot crawl on s video on every TV, but when I used scart connector on my other display, dots turned into rainbows (visible on edges). It's still not correct S-Video signal, Nintendo just f*cked it.
If I were you, I'd check on other TV if you have dot crawl effect. From my experience, rainbow effect = somehow filtered dot crawl.
I'm here cuz I've been fighting with issue since 2016 or 17 and I finally found solution:
• First, you need to dissasembly your N64 and verify the motherboard's revision.
Im so glad youre not shouting
shit, my tv doesn't have S-video in.... :(
Then get a Retrotink2x ua-cam.com/video/q4091D5RJA4/v-deo.html
@@RetroGameCouch what about those SCART adapters that have S-Video input? Would you reccomend it? I'm thinking of doing it since I don't wanna shell the price of a console on an adapter
These work too, at least on my setup.
The Body Harvest result was most likely due to the developers targeting assets for composite. You can't polish a turd....s-video ain't gonna do shit if your textures are low-res to begin with.
Are you dutch?
Misschien. 😀
Yes, about the GBA sp

Dont buy a S-Video cable from consolegoods, cheap bad cable that give you jailbar interference!
