Madhurashtakam, is a Sanskrit ashtakam in devotion of Krishna, composed by the Hindu Bhakti saint Vallabha. Vallabha was a Telugu Brahmin who propagated Pushtimarg, which emphasizes on the unconditional bhakti and seva of Krishna. According to legend, when Krishna himself appeared in front of Vallabha, on the midnight of Shravana Shukla Ekadashi, the philosopher composed the Madhurashtakam in praise of the deity.

My daughter was very hyper active tonight and by the grace of Krishna, this appeared in my recommendation list. I played it after Maithili Thakur's Mahishasurmardini strotam and Kali Kavach. My baby calmed down and now sleeping in my lap.. I heard these three stotras in my pregnancy time also I recited these everyday during those days so I think she understands and is familiar with music and lyrics by that time. I did know from childhood that Panditji is a legend of Indian Classical musical...but seldom did I bother to listen to him or know what he sang....NOW, after having listened this Heavenly Composition a few days back.... I can only regret what I had missed in my life..Life can be more beautiful if you start your day with listening to legends like Pandjit Jasraj ji or Bhismsen Joshi ji .......We are blessed to be born in their era...Trying to catching up fast what I missed...

Vallabhacharya ji, apko anek pranam. This madhurashtakam that you composed is sweeter than Krishna Himself, because it describes Him in a way how I imagine Radha Rani to describe Him. It's not just a beautiful composition but gives a picturesque description of a little, black boy dancing with his fair, white brother amidst their cowherd friends, jumping and frolicking and stealing butter milk. This composition depicts a tall, big, strong, dark and handsome man - who became the husband of all the pure gopikas and all the women who were kidnapped by demons and protected their chastity. The beautiful, wise man who showed Arjuna His Vishwa Roopa on the field during the Kurukshetra War, the beautiful man who played so many divine Leelas, the divine man who spreads the nectar of love, pleasure and bliss through our beautiful Radha Rani sundari to us. A composition so unique, a rendition so beautifully presented by Pandit ji, thank you so much for making me happy and making my soul blessed, for I could see Shree Shyamsundar smiling back at me when I heard this.

His smile, his voice, his spirit fills this universe of mine. He is now everywhere, in such capacity as he was not before. May his awakening be shared through his music to all of you. Pandit Jasraj has very beautifully sung selected (choicest) verses from a literature of more than 300 sanskrit sholaks by the learned devotee of Govind. Bilva Mangal Thakur, the scholar devotee (poet) has put the taste of transcendental sweetness in the childhood pastimes of Lord Mukundam, when His Holiness has been revealing the glories and all attractiveness, of Supreme Madhava. Shri Krishna! Govinda! Hari! Murari! O Lord, Narayana, Vasudeva! O tongue, please drink only this nectar-”Govinda, Damodara, Madhava!” (3) विक्रेतु कामा किल् गोपकन्या, मुरारि पादार्पित चित्त वृतिः। दधि आदिकं मोह वशाद् अवोचद्, गोविन्द दामोदर माधवेति॥ vikretukama kil gop-kanya murari-padarpit-citt-vrittih dadhyadikam mohavashad avochad govind damodar madhaveti Though desiring (supposedly) to sell milk, dahi, butter, etc., the mind of the young gopis was so absorbed in the lotus feet of Krishna that instead of calling out “Milk etc. for sale,” they bewilderedly said, “Govinda!”, Damodara!”, and “Madhava!” (4) गृहे-गृहे गोपवधू कदम्बा:, सर्वे मिलित्वा समवाप्य योगम्। पुण्यानि नामानि पठन्ति नित्यं, गोविन्द दामोदर माधवेति॥ grihe grihe gopa-vadhu-kadambah sarve militva samavaya-yoge punyani namani pathanti nityam govinda damodara madhaveti In house after house, groups of cowherd ladies gather on various occasions, and together they always chant the transcendental names of Krishna-”Govinda, Damodara, and Madhava.” (5) सुखं शयाना निलये निजेऽपि, नामानि विष्णोः प्रवदन्ति मर्त्याः। ते निश्चितं तन्मयतमां व्रजन्ति, गोविन्द दामोदर माधवेति॥ sukham shayana nilaye nije ‘pi namani vishnoh pravadanti martyah te nishcitam tanmayatam vrajanti govinda damodara madhaveti Even the ordinary mortals comfortably restingbat home who chant the names of Vishnu, “Govinda, Damodara,” and “Madhava,” certainly attain (not the apex donain, i.e. Golokam, but at least they get higher celestial position in Vaikunthas) the liberation of having a form of domain similar to that of the Lord. (6) जिह्वे सदैवं भज सुन्दराणि, नामानि कृष्णस्य मनोहराणि। समस्त भक्ताःअति विनाशनानि, गोविन्द दामोदर माधवेति॥ jihve sadaivam bhaja sundarani namani krishnasya manoharani samasta-bhaktarti-vinashanani govinda damodara madhaveti O my tongue, just always worship these beautiful, enchanting names of Krishna, “Govinda, Damodara,” and “Madhava,” which destroy all the obstacles of the devotees. (7) सुख अवसाने इदमेव सारं, दुःखावसाने इदमेव ज्ञेयम्। देह अवसाने इदमेव जाप्यं, गोविन्द दामोदर माधवेति॥ sukhavasane tu idam eva saram duhkhavasane tu idam eva geyam dehavasane tu idam eva japyam govinda damodara madhaveti This indeed is the essence (found) upon ceasing the affairs of mundane happiness. And this too is to be sung after the cessation of all sufferings. I did know from childhood that Panditji is a legend of Indian Classical musical...but seldom did I bother to listen to him or know what he sang....NOW, after having listened this Heavenly Composition a few days back.... I can only regret what I had missed in my life..Life can be more beautiful if you start your day with listening to legends like Pandjit Jasraj ji or Bhismsen Joshi ji .......We are blessed to be born in their era...Trying to catching up fast what I missed...

It's not just a beautiful composition but gives a picturesque description of a little, black boy dancing with his fair, white brother amidst their cowherd friends, jumping and frolicking and stealing butter milk. This composition depicts a tall, big, strong, dark and handsome man - who became the husband of all the pure gopikas and all the women who were kidnapped by demons and protected their chastity. This Sanskrit Bhajan (devotinal poetry) has been composed almost 800-years ago, in the beginning of Bhakti era, by Shril Lilashuka Bilva Mangal Thakur Maharaj.
Pandit Jasraj has very beautifully sung selected (choicest) verses from a literature of more than 300 sanskrit sholaks by the learned devotee of Govind. Pandit Jasraj has set a benchmark for the world of music and devotion in this work. The legendary singing is beyond compare!!!
Bilva Mangal Thakur, the scholar devotee (poet) has put the taste of transcendental sweetness in the childhood pastimes of Lord Mukundam, when His Holiness has been revealing the glories and all attractiveness, of Supreme Madhava.
Yes, the mangalcharan (the starting first verse) Pandit ji has taken from "ashtakam", one of the eight verses by the same learned scholar of Bhakti Rasa (divine love, ecstasy) in the Sanskit.❤

I remember the infant Mukunda, Who sleeps on Banyan leaf and Who by His lotus-hands, is putting His lotus-feet in His lotus-mouth.

Shri Krishna govinda hare murare hey natha narayana vasudeva jihve pibasvamritam etad eva govinda damodara madhaveti.
Shri Krishna! Govinda! Hari! Murari! O Lord, Narayana, Vasudeva! O tongue, please drink only this nectar-”Govinda, Damodara, Madhava!”

विक्रेतु कामा किल् गोपकन्या, मुरारि पादार्पित चित्त वृतिः। दधि आदिकं मोह वशाद् अवोचद्, गोविन्द दामोदर माधवेति॥
vikretukama kil gop-kanya murari-padarpit-citt-vrittih dadhyadikam mohavashad avochad govind damodar madhaveti
Though desiring (supposedly) to sell milk, dahi, butter, etc., the mind of the young gopis was so absorbed in the lotus feet of Krishna that instead of calling out “Milk etc. for sale,” they bewilderedly said, “Govinda!”, Damodara!”, and “Madhava!”

गृहे-गृहे गोपवधू कदम्बा:, सर्वे मिलित्वा समवाप्य योगम्। पुण्यानि नामानि पठन्ति नित्यं, गोविन्द दामोदर माधवेति॥
grihe grihe gopa-vadhu-kadambah sarve militva samavaya-yoge punyani namani pathanti nityam govinda damodara madhaveti
In house after house, groups of cowherd ladies gather on various occasions, and together they always chant the transcendental names of Krishna-”Govinda, Damodara, and Madhava.”

सुखं शयाना निलये निजेऽपि, नामानि विष्णोः प्रवदन्ति मर्त्याः। ते निश्चितं तन्मयतमां व्रजन्ति, गोविन्द दामोदर माधवेति॥
sukham shayana nilaye nije ‘pi namani vishnoh pravadanti martyah te nishcitam tanmayatam vrajanti govinda damodara madhaveti
Even the ordinary mortals comfortably restingbat home who chant the names of Vishnu, “Govinda, Damodara,” and “Madhava,” certainly attain (not the apex donain, i.e. Golokam, but at least they get higher celestial position in Vaikunthas) the liberation of having a form of domain similar to that of the Lord.

जिह्वे सदैवं भज सुन्दराणि, नामानि कृष्णस्य मनोहराणि। समस्त भक्ताःअति विनाशनानि, गोविन्द दामोदर माधवेति॥
jihve sadaivam bhaja sundarani namani krishnasya manoharani samasta-bhaktarti-vinashanani govinda damodara madhaveti
O my tongue, just always worship these beautiful, enchanting names of Krishna, “Govinda, Damodara,” and “Madhava,” which destroy all the obstacles of the devotees.

सुख अवसाने इदमेव सारं, दुःखावसाने इदमेव ज्ञेयम्। देह अवसाने इदमेव जाप्यं, गोविन्द दामोदर माधवेति॥
sukhavasane tu idam eva saram duhkhavasane tu idam eva geyam dehavasane tu idam eva japyam govinda damodara madhaveti
This indeed is the essence (found) upon ceasing the affairs of mundane happiness. And this too is to be sung after the cessation of all sufferings. This alone is to be chanted at the time of death of one’s material body-”Govinda, Damodara, Madhava!”

O tongue, drink only this nectar (of the names), “Shri Krishna, dearmost of Shrimati Radharani, Lord of Gokula, Gopala, Lord of Govardhana, Vishnu, Govinda, Damodara,” and “Madhava.”

O my tongue, I ask only this of you, that at my meeting the bearer of the sceptre of chastisement (Yamaraja), you will utter this sweet phrase with great devotion: “Govinda, Damodara, Madhava!”

Raaga = Nat-Bhairav; Thaat (music notes scale type); Taal = Kaharva (Bhajani Theka); Time : Morning (6am-9am); Season : all seasons.❤
N.B. Nat Bhairav is basically a morning raaga. NAT-BHAIRAV is one of the few raagas which could be sung in all the seasons. The raaga reflects the mood of slight pathos with heroic exuberance in devotional love. The Raag Nat-Bhairav has been revealed by Pt. Ravi Shankar (the great Sitarist) in his earlier manifestation of Indian music from the vedic scriptures.

Sri Jas Raj ji recitation of this hymn about Lord Krishna melts hearts and he intones every word being lost in such a celestial bliss that as if he is preparing a sacred ornament of Krishna's glory! The literal meaning of "Madhuram" in English "Sweetness" does not do justice to it. Jas Raj Ji, undoubtedly feels the inner meaning as what the poet VallabhAchArya meant these lyrics. Every time I listen my eyes well up with tears and Jas Raj Ji was fortunate to receive Krishna's grace. I am just a tiny ordinary mortal, who knows nothing about music, but lucky enough to listen to his music and feel the joy! Jas Raj Ji Aatma Ko Sadgati Prapt Ho!
