This was brilliant. I really love how you honor the traditional way of making violins, instead of just carving the whole thing from one chunk of wood. If I had more patience, this would make a great project.
Yes, basswood is easy to carve, and because it has such a fine grain, you can create a lot of detail. I've never seen basswood splinter. If you want to hollow out the entire underside of the front and back, it can be done with a gouge. You'll have to be careful, but it should work almost as well as finger planes. Just be sure the chisel is razor sharp and make very shallow cuts. -Bob
Inspiring! I think it was an excellent choice to play Canon. I was so relaxed watching this, and what a magnificent piece! Truly amazing and thank you...
I am very very beginner of wood working but I really wanted to make miniature violin, when I watched this your video. I would like to say thank you for your uploading this. I finally could make it, I skipped some steps though. It was very fun to make it! Thank you.
That was really awesome Bob I enjoyed that very much I like woodworking but never tried building something so small - and you've given such attention to details. It looks amazing when done.
Man, this is art! I saw an other video (actually with far more views) but that's just "for a doll-house." I wanted something as close to perfection as possible. And I found that here. Thank you, sir, for sharing. Please keep up.
I didn't actually hollow out the front and back as with a real violin. I used a small gouge (curved chisel) to thin out the underside of the f-hole area of the top so that it would appear to be the proper thickness when viewed from the outside, but that's all. If you watch the video again, you'll see me creating two fat, f-shaped hollows on the underside of the top. Thanks! -Bob
+BobSeg Hi! I have an assignment at school and really want to get top marks at it. Our assignment is to make a very detailed miniature on an object. Since I love to play the violin, I would love to replicate it. So I really want to know on what kind of wood are you using and where u bought it ?,how to bend the ribs of the violin on a bending iron and how to make the arching on the top and bottom plates of the body of the violin. sorry for asking so many questions thanks
Sweet! Bit big as i work in 1/12 scale too, non the less... very sweet! Great to watch how you solve the scaling down by tweaking building here and there with the way the original size is build.
The wood I use for all my carvings is basswood. It is fine-grained, easy to carve, and is available in any hobby or art supply store. If you don't mind trimming it to size, it can be purchased for much less at lumber yards. The tools I use you can see in my videos. Most of my carving is done with an X-Acto knife, and occasionally, chisels. I also use a Dremel tool (available at most hardware stores that sell power tools for around $60). The pieces are finished with sandpaper. Good luck! -Bob
The wood I use is basswood, available at most hobby and art stores. I can't send you a "stencil" since I worked from photographs I got from Google/Yahoo images. I sized them on my computer, then printed them out and traced them (see video). Sorry I can't be of more help. -Bob
Great attention to detail, it looks beautiful. I’ve built some full scale violins in the past, so I really appreciate your craftsmanship. Have you considered inserting a sound post in through the f hole to make it playable?
I am totally amazed. i have a homemade log cabin i made years ago. it has lil fake fireplace, i made bunk beds sofa and chairs out of twigs. lil pcs real wool for blankets etc. i even have lil blue enamel coffe pot/mugs. but now im a stroke survivor only use in 1 hand other is paralyzed. may i pls ask if u would b so kind to make me lill violin 4 in the log cabin? btw im in nova scotia. u can b sure it would b treasured thx karen
Great idea, but I'm afraid carving all those tiny white and black keys would be my undoing. Plus if the top were open (as it should be) that means I'd have to do all the interior detail. I shudder just thinking about it. You do one! :-)
+rayaline markez I work from photographs which I size on my computer and then print out and trace. There are lots of photos available on Google/Yahoo images. Sorry I can't be of more help.-Bob
lol - no, it doesn't. I suppose if I were to use gut instead of thread for the strings, it might, but I doubt if it would sound very good. Maybe the next one. -Bob
Sorry, I don't know of any. I just work from photographs and figure it out as I go along. There are plenty of books and things on wood carving, so maybe there are some projects in those that you might be interested in trying. Sorry I can't be of more help -- good luck! -Bob
no bass bar, purfling, or sound post? jeeeeesh. jk, it looks really nice. i bet it took a while. you've got some patience for something that's not even gonna make music
That is amazing. Could you please send me a message telling me what was the exact wood u used. Would it be possible for you to some how send me the stensill you used through email i really want to try craft that. You are amazing
+Black Knight Never have, but I looked at a lot of pictures and videos of how they are made. I figured I would get the greatest amount of authenticity if I followed the same methods.-Bob
Finally someone who works well with eye for details.
Fantastically amazing. Now that’s a labor of love. I love this video I almost forgot to breathe.

I like to start carving with wood, but i don't know what wood is the best for carving and what for basic tools you need. Could you help me?

Hello great job can u or have u done a guitar
I was wondering if it's possible to do this with other wood....we don't have basswood here in brazil!
Great attention to detail, it looks beautiful. I’ve built some full scale violins in the past, so I really appreciate your craftsmanship.

That was impressive to watch, but quite the bummer at the end when we didn't get to hear it play.
