I drive a 2018 Chevy Bolt. It’s fast, reliable and fun to drive. No range anxiety. Easy to park. Very low maintenance cost. One pedal driving. I rarely use the car’s brake. Good handling and quiet driving. Best car GM has built in the US. A bit overpriced, but prices will come down. I drive without guilt for the environment. No battery degradation after 10,000 miles. No regrets. Get one!
Got the 2020 model. Put in a 220 plug at garage and purchased charging system with new gun. Car now fully charges in 5 hours instead of 14 hrs plus with the factory 110 plug. A few days ago after a heavy rain we decided to drive thru the neighborhood. The car got stuck in the mud. Buried it up to the hubs. The little tow hook we installed and pulled it out of mud with a 4 wheel drive truck. We drive car 125 miles daily. Love it at 31,000.
Good review Zack. Something I’m interested in when looking into electric cars is the charging capabilities. It seems every car has different charge rates. It would Ben nice to get your opinion on it. We all know Tesla has their super charger but it would be nice to get some comments on the charging differences in the cars you brought up like the Kia Niro, Nissan Leaf, etc. Keep up the great work!
I’m so glad they come with 17” wheels. I’m so over cars coming standard with 18” wheels so it increases my tire costs for the life of the car along with a harsher ride.
Agree with Nick R, great review! The "leather" seats and plastic everywhere would be great for folks with young kids. Read: easy to clean and hard to destroy. We currently have a Nisan Leaf (2012). Since it is an older car, the payments equal the monthly gas costs in our larger car. The range on it though is bearly enough to use it as a daily computer and the cloth seats are hard to keep clean (we have two young kids). I'm still trying to get some melted crayon out of the back seat :/ Given your review and the mention of the seats and plastic everywhere the Bolt might be our next car. Thanks much Zack!
Wait for the 2021 if you want to buy new. Lots of changes, same power & range. Those seats were mainly due to "supplier issues". '21 gets a power driver seat.
With the 2021 units out and the 2022 models (including the new EUV!), right around the corner, 2020's have major incentives (if you can find one). I got a 2020 Cayenne Orange, nicely equipped, for around $23,000, less with the trade in of my Volt!
I've owned cars with LED headlights. Because they create virtually no heat, they tend to ice over in the winter. The Bolt EV has HID Lamps, which do create heat. I haven't had my Bolt EV through the winter yet, but I'm anticipating the lease will not ice over like the LED headlights did. Another thing to note is the the On-Demand Regen will bring the car to a stop, but unlike "L" mode (one-pedal driving) the brake lights to not light up when using the On-Demand.
The brake lights come on when you use any or the regen deceleration, “L” mode or paddle. Either or using both will bring the Bolt to a full stop. However, the brake lights don’t stay on when stopped. Using regen braking saves the brake pads meaning you will not need a brake job for a much longer time than using brakes as usual in an ICE car.
@@eweuflesu23 You are correct. I discovered that the brake lights come on with the On Demand paddle. I still don't like the idea that the brake lights go off when I'm at a complete stop. It was always a pet peeve of mine that people with a manual transmission would take their foot off the brake at a stop light. They could get rear ended and, worse yet, pushed out into traffic. I don't know if the Bolt could get pushed when it is stopped in L mode.
Hi Guys, Hope "WALMART" soon sees the advantage of having say 6x EV Charge Stations near front door of every USA Store! It is perfect blend~ Shopper now has a hour or more to shop inside!
EV range can be so misleading. Buyers look for a large number to alleviate range anxiety, but pay a penalty in weight and cost. The Bolt seems to have a very limited audience. In any case, nice review Zack.
This car certainly is stylish. I don’t mind it at all. But discussing electric cars this week with friends (at a cottage), nobody seems to make the leap into pure and electric. Many people are finally willing to consider a hybrid, but will not leap into pure electric. Except for one of my friends .... who bought a Leaf, but would never do it again (Winter travel between Ottawa & Peterborough is NOT an option). EV’s are coming and at least they’re finally looking sharp (Mitsubishi i-MiEV!). Thanks for the video.
great review...I like the blue color...it's my one gripe with electric cars..I am sure tesla owners love their car...but where is the exciting color option? just plain old black/white/blue/red...Same with the upcoming Polestar 2...
Nice review, Zack. It's only a spread-sheet review if you treat it like that. How about some discussion of driving dynamics, maybe have some fun with it? The pure enthusiasm of those guys with a million subscribers is palpable.
Someone in another comment mentioned, the Bolt can be had for around $32000 USD. Is that expensive? And what do the average American consumers spend on a new vehicle? Here in Canada, I believe it Is around $40000 CAD. So that is about what the Bolt costs after federal rebate. And I am sure, Canada being a much smaller market have something do to with vehicles being more expensive here. I personally would pick to live in a country with way less popular, than one with more population, but cheaper vehicles 😂
Funnycat there definitely a lot of factors. You mentioned 2008, that reminds me having a trade agreement also make a difference. After Canada and South Korea signed an agreement, the Korean cars were thousands cheaper. Back to the small market issue, I think it still plays a part, perhaps a small part. I remember listening to Thomas Tetzlaff from VW, explaining why VW won’t send some of its vehicles to North America. If I didn’t misunderstand him, he said they take how much it would cost them to bring the vehicle here, divide by how many they think they can sell, = the MSRP of the vehicle. In a nut shell.
@Funnycat Bolts in Canada come with standard heated front seats and standard DC Fast charging. I purchased my 2020 Bolt Premier in New Jersey last March and paid extra for the DC fast charging. ( I cannot imagine anyone purchasing a Bolt without DC Fast charging ).Heated leather seats are standard on the Premier. I also got the Oasis Blue color, which I love. Planning a trip to upstate New York at the end of September. I will extend the trip to Montreal - if the border reopens - i can dream.
Buying an EV in Canada don’t really seem to make much financial sense right now, unless you live in BC or QC. The Model 3 is probably the only exception, since it is actually priced to compete more closely with the vehicles in its class. But you’d spend all those money on a luxury car, that isn’t luxurious, so there is that trade off 😂
If people would stop thinking that range is everything in an EV that'd be great. The best car isn't the one to have the most range, it should be the best car period. The E-Golf is a much better car overall, and being 10k cheaper is a solid incentive. More confortable, higher quality, good tech and features, and all for 37k (or 24k if you deduct the 13 000$ incentive in QC).
$45,000 for a car this size. That's why the "electric car revolution" isn't happening any time soon. The "electric car revolution" will end up being a few percentage points (
$45K is MSRP. Not sure about Canada, but in the US, Chevrolet heavily discounts the Bolt. I can pickup a fully loaded 2020 Bolt Premier for USD $32000. When you figure in that this car needs no maintenance other than tire rotations and cabin filters, it is a bargain.
I would not hesitate to buy a hybrid. Electric on the other hand would not work for me. I live in the middle of nowhere Canada, there are no charging stations anywhere around me.
Mowcowbell surely, there are other vehicles in that class you can buy at a much cheaper price in the US? Let’s use the Kia Niro for example, so it is apples to apples. Here in Canada, the price difference between the 2020 Niro EX hybrid, and 2020 Niro EX EV is about $10000 CAD ($15000 CAD for SX Touring), after federal rebate (only two provinces offer further provincial rebate). The Niro Hybrid being so fuel efficient, it will take such a long time to just “break even”. I wouldn’t say that’s a good deal. The only EV that make financial sense, i think, is the Model 3 (maybe the Model Y, depends on how other similarly sized EV’s pricing), because it is actually priced to compete with the vehicles in its class.
Leasing this car is where the real deals come into play. You can easily lease this for around $200 or less per month. If you stack your incentives right, it can be under $100 per month. I've done it.
Nice seeing your wife Andrea!! I liked hearing her review. She’s beautiful! I am kinda glad I got the 2019 Bolt EV Premier for my birthday in February as I like the rear door openers! I wish the 2020 had them with the HD screens. I don’t know if I mind the cameras on my car but could be better. Maybe all included on the 2021 Bolt EUV?
I love the design. I test drove this car weeks ago and I’m trying to decide to pull the trigger on one. I got my eye on an orange Cheyenne color premier model. I keep watching reviews like this one lol. The size is perfect for me. I wish I can rent one for a day to try it out but none are available to rent. I value bolt owners review and comments if anyone has one of these. I’m also considering a Prius. I wish toyota had better looking smaller hybrids. The regular Prius I would consider. The PHEV Prius is even uglier and I really really want to go full EV instead of hybrid. I worry GM will stop making these smaller bolts in favor for the upcoming suv version. I love these compact cars. I don’t need such a big one. And it seems everyone is going towards bigger vehicles now. The bolt size is my kind of ride. The base model is an affordable choice but why not just get the premier. If I get a base model I’m gonna missing all the extra stuff the premier has lol. Too bad they don’t have sun roofs. And no a model 3 is not the kind of vehicle I need. I need a small hatchback. I think they should have made the front seats a bench seat like the back. Use a knob for the gear shifter and put it on the dash like ram trucks.
I just bought a 2020 Premier yesterday. I loved the test drive and the front seat was comfy for me. The problem I had, after driving over 200 miles to pick up the car, was being told that there was a recall on the rear hatch latch and I couldn't drive it home. Somehow the salesperson didn't know about the recall although other salespeople on the floor when I arrived knew about it. They finally agreed to transport it to my house when the car is repaired so it could have been worse.
chuck3565 I don’t know. I can’t stop thinking about the car lol. I’m just worried it won’t last past the loan term of 6 years which is what I usually get. These cars are still on the experimental stage. I just wish I had some assurance. If I get a Toyota Prius I know I got a great proven car but then again it’s still using gas and oil. Which I made a pledge I’m done with gas vehicles
The one thing that bothers me about the Bolt, and all other 2WD EVs is that it's FWD. I think all 2WD EVs really should be RWD. RWD would improve the handling, improve acceleration, and maybe even give it the ability to tow. The Bolt is an all-new platform. It really should've been designed with that in mind. All Tesla's are like that. The Volkswagen ID is like that. C'me on, Chevrolet.
We have a bunch of brand new 2020 Chevy Bolts! Check em out. We're gonna do a video tomorrow on them! We're getting about 10-12 of them total. Game changer for commuters?
yur post 'bout yur Bolt cars 9 months ago. presently June 2021 - i'm in tha market 4 a new or used Bolt where r yu & what is tha cheapest out tha door price ? & du yu hav any slightly used Bolt ??
no mention of the fact it doesnt have adaptive cruise control. to me this is a deal breaker, a 45k vehicle should have that. The Ioniq does. The base Ioniq has quite a few safety features as standard that this does not. Extra range is great, as is active liquid temp control for the battery that this has though. The decision is awful tough for me. The Ioniq has a very very nice seat though.
I love the Bolt. I would love to by a electric car but there or to much price$$$$. My budget for a car is 22 000$ with tax. So i got my self a 2020 Chevrolet Spark.
You can get them for WAY cheaper here in the US now. People have been getting Premier trims for like $30k out the door, and the LTs of course are even cheaper. So much so, I’m actually looking to get a Bolt now. The prices before were cost prohibitive, but if it costs the same as a new entry level CR-V or something, I’ll take the electric car.
417km yeah right. I own a 40 kw Leaf and it was said to drive 378km in the start, then they changed it to 270 when it came out. Then the local car magazine made it go 200km. I can only make it go 150km driving like a normal human being that is 80% highway and 20% city and country roads. The same with the Kona that has a circa 24kw bigger battery. I could only make it go about 200-250km depending on my driving pattern and temperature. And then we are just talking about it being new. Not in 5 years time when it will have lost at least 10% range. And still we are talking about 20 degree celsius temperatures. Going from 20 degrees to 0 then you have to remove another 10-20% range.
@John Edwards I had nothing in the car, AC was not even on, and I always have it on drive mode B which is max regen. All of the number these car manufactors come up with, is based on you as a driver going 60 km/h with ac on normal on the country roads keeping a steady speed. But normal people go 5-130 km/t, and change speed all the time, which is the legal speed limit. And normal people use the freeway at least 50% of the time. (I use the freeway about 80% of the time) My numbers I came up with, was when the car was new, it was the same with my model and the others, nothing was bad with my version. And when it is winter, I lose about 50km driving about the same speed. In 5 years time, it will realistically be about 20% less. So for normal people to use them, that don't want to end in a situation driving like an 90 year old behind a truck all the way. They should only consider getting a EV when the standard is at least 100kw. Unless it is a Tesla, then it is much eaier to find a place to recharge and do it like 2-3x faster. I only recommend normal people considering an EV, if they live in the city and max do 100-150km a day. I only got mine because of the gigantic TAX break I could get at the time. And I realized that the Leaf was going to be the last EV that was going to last for many years without breaking down. So I did it as an investment, and that turned out to be a pretty good thing, because I can see the standard of EV's being pushed out now, are very fragile/light/small batteries plus lots of features, so most of them won't last long compared to the Leaf, because people are too focused on features.
@@allankoivu3263 Yes, but is also that in most other EV's, you just only notice it when you start breaking your regular driving pattern and the weather starts turnng nasty.
@@allankoivu3263 I also don't have battery degradation in mine that I can feel. But I am just stating that most EV ranges that are adverticed are not to be trusted.
250 miles of range is good ? On any significant road trip you are going to be sitting around charging it. I'll stick with my gas powered civic which cost 19,000, gets 400 miles and recharges in 2 minutes
You really have to drive an EV for a few weeks to really appreciate how superior they are. It's all the things that are not on a spec sheet. The joy of having your own home filling station and no longer needing to go to a gas station ever again unless you want to buy some food. The instant torque that will absolutely blow your civic away. The smooth and quiet ride, that especially under acceleration, is much nicer than any gas car. The peace of mind knowing that you are not spewing out exhaust every mile. The joy of actually getting energy back on braking instead of just wearing down your brake pads. I could go on....
Unfortunately until they get fast charging that is like gas or make hydrogen cheaper I think cars will be just a city thing. It’s just not practical right now
@John Edwards nope...gas up take a pee hit a fast food eat on the road... I’d hate to think of adding that much time to 30 hr trip when we go to Cali or Idaho
I just wish the styling was nicer. All the mainstream EV’s look like doorstops. I’d love to see a S3XYer shape going on. An EV commuter with some MR2, Fiero, CRX inspiration would be awesome.
John Edwards lol you thought you did something 🙃 when did we say we wouldn’t spend that just bc of the badge it carries?? It’s the quality and space we are talking about; I wouldn’t mind buying a $50k chevy, if it has good quality; the tahoe for example, I’d rather get a tahoe for that money instead of a bolt, it has better quality and more space...read before you go off 😌
John Edwards yes but a corvette is a special vehicle and the value you get with a 50k gm truck is far more than a 50k gm electric vehicle. Gm isn’t a market leader in the electric vehicle segment nor are their products very reliable.
Vicki Liberato yes I shopped for my daughter, we loved it. We got her one, $24,790+1,670 freight($26,460+tax), or 2k more for the Premium package (heated seats everywhere, heated steering wheel, softex leather, led lights, power seats with lumbar. She’s getting 4.4L/100km (53.5 mpg), with no deliberate efficiency driving. Drives so nice, fantastic car!
Did you really say: “It’s always nice to get a woman’s point of view”?!?! And she only commented on the comfort and aesthetics. Please consider joining the 21st century!!
@John Edwards I agree but in term of a consumer standpoint having a electric car with a price of 25k usd is where it will become more mainstream. I want an electric but I'm not gonna fork out 50k cad for a bolt or Kona or any electric car for that matter once a company will make it under 30k without the tax credit then you'll see ev becoming more mainstream. As for tesla model yes there's are plenty on the road but people forget this is a luxury brand and you're true cost to own will be significantly higher or somewhat the same as their counterparts (Lexus BMW Mercedes) that why it's not becoming mainstream do to my point.
I have my 2020 bolt for about a month now and I love it. love the rear veiw mirror camera when backseat is full

Hyundai ioniq ev is awesome
My Account __ yeah I thought about that one too but still a gas engine to deal with.
Joel Martinez what ? There’s a full EV version dude.
Great Review, not holding back on being honest.
I drive 100 miles a day with no where to charge between work and home. So would this be a buy for me
Should be no problem.
It depends. If you live in a cold climate and you’re driving 75mph, your range will be cut in half. Cutting it close!
65 mph in the Midwest 70 mph when on interstate
Michael Personally, I wouldn’t do it. Driving through snow and using the heat will drain your range in a hurry!
John Edwards Fast charging in the Bolt is SLOW. 55kw/hr max and usually less.
I would rather have AWD. In fact, the Bolt is now off my list. Thanks for reminding me.
Great comparo breakdown
We have a bunch of brand new 2020 Chevy Bolts! Check em out. We're gonna do a video tomorrow on them! We're getting about 10-12 of them total. Game changer for commuters?
yur post 'bout yur Bolt cars 9 months ago.
presently June 2021 - i'm in tha market 4 a new or used Bolt where r yu & what is tha cheapest out tha door price ? & du yu hav any slightly used Bolt ??
They need to bring the price down to that of a Ford Fiesta or the GM equivalent.
Lol
@@samme-ds7ib If you want maximum marketshare do what Henry Ford did. Make sure your car is well within reach of the average factory worker.
Fresh video. Thanks!
I guess you didn't know about the L on your shifter? When you put it in drive down shift to the L and you don't have to use the hand padle.
no mention of the fact it doesnt have adaptive cruise control. to me this is a deal breaker, a 45k vehicle should have that. The Ioniq does. The base Ioniq has quite a few safety features as standard that this does not. Extra range is great, as is active liquid temp control for the battery that this has though. The decision is awful tough for me. The Ioniq has a very very nice seat though.
I have that same color
What would you Zach have the Niro EV or this?
Bolt
Motormouth did you explain why in your up coming Niro video?
An EV at the price of a Corolla with 417km of range...now we are really talking and shopping.
Hopefully soon, when battery technology improves.
They are likely losing money on the car so playing the features game is going to keep happening until batteries get cheaper.
Nice review. It’s a car I would consider.
Are the seats any softer yet? Wait to answer until you drive it for 4 hours!
How often are you driving for four hours?
@@eweuflesu23 - Every time I drive to Los Angeles from the San Francisco Bay area. Or to the Sierras.
I love the Bolt. I would love to by a electric car but there or to much price$$$$. My budget for a car is 22 000$ with tax. So i got my self a 2020 Chevrolet Spark.
I just bought a Premier for $29990 U.S.
Like the color
That's alot of money for the little you get
You can get them for WAY cheaper here in the US now. People have been getting Premier trims for like $30k out the door, and the LTs of course are even cheaper. So much so, I’m actually looking to get a Bolt now. The prices before were cost prohibitive, but if it costs the same as a new entry level CR-V or something, I’ll take the electric car.
7:37 You should see my rearview camera on my Lexus GX 470. No comparison. Russian dashcam quality.
Is this awd?
FWD
@@Motormouth... thank you zack!
(I use the freeway about 80% of the time)
My numbers I came up with, was when the car was new, it was the same with my model and the others, nothing was bad with my version.
Not surprising battery management on the Leaf is very poor...
@@allankoivu3263 Yes, but is also that in most other EV's, you just only notice it when you start breaking your regular driving pattern and the weather starts turnng nasty.
I have a Volt with proper battery management......4 years old and still no noticeable battery degradation.
Sorry but if im paying $50k for a car, im not buying a chevy volt
Chiron Christi still, imagine you get a $10k discount, it is still a 40k car, that is a lot for a small car
Bolt. The Volt was discontinued.
John Edwards lol you thought you did something 🙃 when did we say we wouldn’t spend that just bc of the badge it carries?? It’s the quality and space we are talking about; I wouldn’t mind buying a $50k chevy, if it has good quality; the tahoe for example, I’d rather get a tahoe for that money instead of a bolt, it has better quality and more space...read before you go off 😌
John Edwards uh yea i would buy a lexus for $50k cuz that’s the epitome of quality. Who in their right mind buys a 50k electric gm product?
John Edwards yes but a corvette is a special vehicle and the value you get with a 50k gm truck is far more than a 50k gm electric vehicle. Gm isn’t a market leader in the electric vehicle segment nor are their products very reliable.
GET THE TOYOTA COROLLA HYBRID ,$ 30,000 ,52 MPG .
OKAY 👌
😬🤢
Vicki Liberato yes I shopped for my daughter, we loved it. We got her one, $24,790+1,670 freight($26,460+tax), or 2k more for the Premium package (heated seats everywhere, heated steering wheel, softex leather, led lights, power seats with lumbar. She’s getting 4.4L/100km (53.5 mpg), with no deliberate efficiency driving. Drives so nice, fantastic car!
Oh my God, what the hell is this color.
Great video, however.
Looks great in person, kind of like Porsche Miami Blue
Agreed, not for me. I'd probably go with their other blue.
Did you really say: “It’s always nice to get a woman’s point of view”?!?! And she only commented on the comfort and aesthetics. Please consider joining the 21st century!!
I suggest you watch a few more videos from the channel before you comment.
Love the price, but still going with a tesla. All other EVs just look so so ugly.
$50k with gas prices way down due to COVID. Hmm.
Gas prices are creeping up again and will eventually be back to high normal within a year I suspect.
These electric cars are a crock. Until they offer better value and range than a gas powered car, they will won't become mainstream vehicles
@John Edwards thank you for you're great response
Hopefully this can effect Canada as well if Biden get elected
This and the BMW i3 is just ugly 😅
Tommy Olsen nah, the Beemer is way uglier
Artagain yeah !😅
Nope not impressed.
It looks like a shoebox
