Good show Tom, I first experienced drag from a movie starring Divine at the St. Mark's Theater in the 70s. The movie was Pink Flamingos
She was by far your happiest interviewee you've ever had! Riveting...
Kabuki! Female roles are played by men in Kabuki theatre. I was gifted two beautifully costumed Japanese dolls. Realized they're female impersonator dolls! Drag! 😁
Thanks again John in Chicago
Thank you Tom ❤
Another great subject
The first time I saw drag was on Run Paul's drag race season 3. I already knew I was queer, but I was deeply closeted. Seeing the Queens on TV at an accesible time of the day, on VH1 in Spanish, was like a little fist bump to my queerness. Like hey, they are out there, outside, and existing in their bodies.
I think the first time I saw something Drag! Was from the movie Birdcage but it Never Comes Up!
Birdcage came out when I was in High School. It wasn’t exactly my typical fare, but I loved it!
An idea for the next interview:
Michael J. Weinstein
Ten Times Chai: 180 Orthodox Synagogues of New York City
This is a good tip from the book "five years...". I collect books that address this topic about punk in NYC. Of course I have Please Kill Me and all the Ramones biographies. But I must highlight others that I have read. One called "Punk Avenue" by Phil Marcade and another "From Velvets to Voidoids" by Clinton Heylin.
Thanks
Hey Tom! How's it going? Another great show !!!
My drag name would be Lady Schick 😊

Good stuff... when your voice is suppressed the provocative (pro-voice-active) emerges.
Blah blah blah... I miss your tours.
😂🤦🏻♂️
