I am so excited to receive my Polar Night pen! Thanks to Goldspot for the opportunity! Also, my daughter ordered a Polar Night for herself; her first Nahvalur pen, AND her first Goldspot purchase.
Since we have years of experience selling various editions, we use our data to make an informed forecast about how many pens to order. Sometimes, such is the case with Kaweco, there is a minimum order to make an exclusive. So, even though we may want a lower number, we still have to adhere to the minimum.
I adore my BENU Hot Toddy! It is such a stunning design and has such a fun gold shimmer flake in it. Edit: As for my question, which is your favourite collab pen that Goldspot has done?
Thanks for continuing to provide us with informative and interesting content. I'm curious, if one were interested in having a nib custom ground at a future date, what type of nib (material and size) would be best to start with?
I liked today’s topic. You mentioned Johnathan Brooks acrylic. How are different materials made into rods for pens? Also, what do the rods look like, and how are their designs reproduced? Thanks. 👍
That's a great question and Figboot On Pens has a video, in which he goes to visit Jonathan Brooks and learns firsthand about the process. It's a very entertaining and informative video.
I think this is the excellent video Teresa mentioned that gives you a behind-the-scenes look at how Jonathon makes the resin - ua-cam.com/video/uRuuY9tm3AA/v-deo.html
Love these! My question is: What big additions in the fountain pen world should we keep an eye out for in 2025…any groundbreaking designs or mechanics?
Fascinating, Tom. Thanks. I have and really enjoy the Baby Beluga and own a couple more pens from this brand. How might a penmaking brand adhere to some element that is consistent over time, like the way Benu has those wonderful shapes, even when there was not any handpainting and little glitter their designs are easily recognizable? Or the way high-end Pelikans have the birds on the finial and the identifiable clip? Is it important or even desirable? The Opus minis don't even resemble the Flora much at all. Just curious.(choose me! choose me please!)
I bought the Opus 88 mini fall leaves fountain pen from you guys. I fell in love with the design and color of the pen. It was an impulse buy for me. The only thing I feel bummed about is that the cap doesn’t quite post well on the back of the pen but I guess Opus will have to work on fine tuning that issue I suppose. Also, I realize that you guys are an authorized retailer of Sensa Pens as well but have been eyeing the Steamboat Willie one for a while.
I love all of your exclusive pens, especially the opus 88 ones. Given how much ink those pens can hold, how do you decide how much ink to fill your pens with? I sometimes find that I get tired of some inks but cant bring myself to "waste" the ink already loaded up in the pen.
Loved hearing the behind the scenes of how Exclusives happen. My question is what influences the cap sealing quality of a fountain pen? Is it purely the inner cap, or is it also the cap mechanism (e.g. screw vs slip on vs click)? Are there ways to improve the seal in an already owned favourite pen?
While we don't have a showroom like a traditional brick and mortar pen shop, we do allow folks to come in and pick up their order or look at a few pens we can pull from the warehouse beforehand.
So sorry I missed that Pendemic pen. It’s gorgeous. I am a bit surprised that you give away the prototype. Does Goldspot keep one of every Goldspot exclusive in a display somewhere?
We do have some of the pens on display in our office. But, for the majority of the exclusives, they're all gone except for the ones our team buys for their personal collections.
Really cool process! I do have a question, that might be a bit related... I have noticed that Pilot only sends medium, fine and extra fine nibs to USA.. as a retailer, do you have any saying of the type of nibs that you can get from them? Because here in North America we might have different needs and having and extra fine nib for our writing (not like Japanese) doesn't really require that much precision and we might be more oriented (at least me) on experiencing more characteristics from different inks, so broad nibs are more suited (again at least for me)
Which Pilot Pen are you looking for? There are some that have broad nib options. The Pilot Custom 912, Falcon, Custom 743, and Vanishing Points come to mind.
@GoldspotPens nothing in particular, but I noticed, and I did ask them at the DC Pen Show, and they said that it doesn't sell well in the US, which i think is odd 😊
Love it! Don’t know if this has been asked before, but I’m an artist and illustrator, and I would love some pen/ink recommendations for artists! I feel like the criteria for writing changes a bit for drawing, so I’m curious to see an experts recommendation
Love the Opus 88 Minis! My question is if you have any ideas for introducing friends/loved ones to fountain pens. I'd love to share my love of fountain pens with my husband and friends, but have so far been unsuccessful in creating converts lol. 😢
This Opus 88 mini is perfect for the fall! My question: Do you believe the Tariff Act will pass, and how will it impact Goldspot Pens? I heard it could mean an increase of 25%! Thanks
My question is: Are there recommendations for nib size and material for a fountain pen based on writing style? For example, according to size and pressure, frequency and purpose, stroke style, and writing speed?
If I set up a display in my home office for my pens, are there an precautions I should take to ensure I don't damage them? Wood oil from woodens displays, bright/hot lights, UV, etc.... Thank You!
I have always been interested in special editions. I know other manufacturers make special edition pens with lower production amounts. Delta will do it. Nettuno does. Have you thought of other manufacturers? Is there any model pen you want to make a special edition?
When making exclusives, or even just stocking regular pens, how do you determine what sizes to order? Do you make sure it's 80% Medium and Fine, or are Broad, Extra-fine, and stub more popular than I expect?
Yes, a majority of people opt for either Medium or Fine, so we usually order the most in those sizes. We often use sales data from other, similar pens we've sold in the past to inform the nib allocation for future releases.
Will you recommend pens with larger grip sections for people like me with large hands? I live in a town without fountain pen stores and have ordered many pens online, only to be disappointed by how narrow and uncomfortable they are to use during my long journaling sessions.
What makes a good sealing cap on a fountain pen? In other words, what should I look for when buying a pen as a gift for someone who wants a fountain pen but is an occasional user (runs the risk of drying out the pen)?
As someone who love's fountain pens, but has never used one, what pen/set up (cartridge vs. ink well, etc) would you suggest for beginners to "get their nibs wet" before delving too far down the rabbit hole on expensive models?
Fun video, Tom! Question: Which pen that Goldspot has stocked has been the biggest success? For example, by total volume sold, if not a limited edition/exclusive. Or, alternatively, which have been some stand-out sellouts, where, no matter how much you stocked, you just couldn't keep up with demand? (Of course, I'm biased to knowing about my beloved fountain pens, but I'd be interested in hearing about Ballpoints/Rollerballs, too, if there were an interesting story among 'em!)
I have been collecting fountain pens for 2 years now, I only use standard inks, but I would really love to use shimmer inks, too. I know shimmer inks can be a little more higher maintenance. Is there anything a newbie to shimmer inks should do differently about pen maintenance??
Keeping on the topic of retailer exclusive items, is there items outside of fountain pens that you feel would make good retail exclusives or areas that could be explored more to help expand the world of fountain pens?
Here's my question! How do you stop yourself from going crazy and impulse buying, especially just starting out and wanting to try everything new, be it ink, pens, or even paper?
Call of Cthulhu is such a dramatic looking pen and the Pendemic Minty is lovely. Any chances of doing a second run for the Minty? 💜 My question: any tips on how to keep our pens and inks in tiptop shape now that winter is coming?
I am so excited to receive my Polar Night pen! Thanks to Goldspot for the opportunity! Also, my daughter ordered a Polar Night for herself; her first Nahvalur pen, AND her first Goldspot purchase.
You’re amazing :)
Thank you for the excellent name! Thanks to your daughter for also ordering one for herself. The love of fountain pens must run in the family.
Fascinating episode!. I just ordered the Opus 88 fall leaves mini and can't wait! Thanks for all your great videos, Tom!
Yay! Thank you!
Yes! Love the new Narwhal too! 😊
My favorite gold spot pen exclusives, are definitely the Kaweco collabs!
How do you decide how much stock to purchase?
Since we have years of experience selling various editions, we use our data to make an informed forecast about how many pens to order. Sometimes, such is the case with Kaweco, there is a minimum order to make an exclusive. So, even though we may want a lower number, we still have to adhere to the minimum.
I adore my BENU Hot Toddy! It is such a stunning design and has such a fun gold shimmer flake in it.
Edit: As for my question, which is your favourite collab pen that Goldspot has done?
What does it mean when you call a pen “bespoke”? Thanks
"Made to order." The pen is tailored to its owner in some meaningful way.
Tom IF you had a choice of creating your own fountain pen, what type of filling mechanism/nib size would you like to have?
I imagined a "Franken pen" that combined all the elements of various pens I love so much in this video here - ua-cam.com/video/Eo6FkAzEXNA/v-deo.html

Have you ever made a pen design based on quilt designs, and has the look of fabric?

Hi! Great vid!
How do you see the reduction of nib sizes offered by brands?

Tom, would you ever consider a collaboration with a nib maker to put fun designs(not just a logo) on a nib. Maybe a seasonal nib, like holiday nibs?
My question is: Are there recommendations for nib size and material for a fountain pen based on writing style? For example, according to size and pressure, frequency and purpose, stroke style, and writing speed?

What is the most difficult pen to match the ink with? Very interesting video. Thank you.
Is there a special silicone grease for fountain pens or will any food grade silicone grease work?
100% silicone grease.
I have always been interested in special editions. I know other manufacturers make special edition pens with lower production amounts. Delta will do it. Nettuno does. Have you thought of other manufacturers?

Keeping on the topic of retailer exclusive items, is there items outside of fountain pens that you feel would make good retail exclusives or areas that could be explored more to help expand the world of fountain pens?
Absolutely, we've also made an exclusive notebook design and an exclusive fountain pen ink. We will do more of this next year.
So, when are you going to have Tracy on the show? Her artwork is amazing!
That would be fun. Maybe we'll do a live stream and we'll brainstorm a pen design together.
How did you get interested in fountain pens, and what was your first experience like?
Best way to store way too many pens?
Happy Thanksgiving
Happy Thanksgiving to you too!

How do you recommend pen lovers ring in the new year?
Are you doing a Mystery Box in December? How do you decide what will be in a Mystery Box or a Weekly Dip?
The next Mystery box will be in January. We're working on figuring out what will go in the box now. ;-)
@@GoldspotPens Thanks! I was thinking of getting myself a mystery Christmas present but I may make it a mystery birthday present instead.
