    Underrated - one of the best sci-fi films of the 21st century - fantastic f/x and such a soul-searching odyssey; Portman hasn't been this good since BLACK SWAN

    Fun fact: all the "tropical forest" scenes were shot in a park near London. It's amazing what set dressing can do.

    My favorite thing about this film is the music. It's just so fucking good.

    NICE! This would have been on my list of “where’s my movie” picks, Now, you MUST watch Ex Machina, by the same director.

    That freaking bear remains one of the most terrifying things I've ever seen / heard. Everything in "The Shimmer"just is and it's doing more than likely what it is always doing like when a fungus proliferates and spreads its not malevolent and because the atmosphere the floor and fauna inside the Shimmer is so alien anything inside it just gets warped being forcefully adjusted to the environment

    Among the things I liked the most in the movie, my favourite is the creature/phenomenon itself.
    Its not like the typical horror movie villain, because its not evil.
    It just exists.
    And I especially like the difference between how Kane and Lena interact with it.
    With Kane it feels like he is treating it almost like a child or a recruit or something, asking it if its ever seen a phosphorus granade go off and telling it to cover its eyes.
    Lena is a lot more aggressive, probably bc Kane at this point had given up, and Lena hasnt.
    Although even despite Lena and mirror Lena fighting it out, the creature is still curious, it still seems childish almost in how trusting it is.
    It lets Lena take its hands and place the granade into them.
    Idk bottom line I felt kinda bad for the creature even, bc it doesnt seem to be doing any of this on purpose.
    Very cool film and very enjoyable reaction!

    I love this wondrously strange film. Amazing music and creative visuals. Beautiful movie. Can't wait to watch this reaction!
    A tv show recommendation; LOST (2004). I know youve talked about maybe doing it before but its hit netflix in the US and a lot people watching it for first time and loving it. I really think its right up both your alley and will love it. Amazing show

    The two possibilities I saw were:
    1) The Lena at the end was the duplicate and what she told Benedict Wong at the end was an intentional lie, either fabricated to sound like what he wanted to hear or made out of Real Lena’s memories.
    2) Lena at the end was the Real Lena, who *did* successfully kill Duplicate Lena and destroyed the Lighthouse, but in spite of that, the entire ordeal of Real Lena first penetrating the Shimmer and making it all the way to the Lighthouse has mutated her enough, and repeatedly scrambled her memories, that now she herself is mutated enough, that both she and Kane are no longer human.
    There’s a book series this is based on that I haven’t read, but I think #2 makes more sense.
    I also see an emotional and psychological metaphor between the plot and her affair, leaving their marriage/relationship “surviving” being destroyed but so irrevocably altered that neither of them could be the same again afterward.

      What they said

    • @lunacouer
      @lunacouer Місяць тому +5

      The book series is very different and won't give many answers either lol. Alex Garland said he read the first novel once, and then built this story from his memory of what he read and how it affected him, not as a faithful adaptation. I highly recommend at least the first book - it's beautifully written - but it's best to treat the movie and the book as two different stories.
      I think #2 is the closest too, but when I rewatched the movie from the lens of how the destruction of their marriage transformed both of them, it made more sense to me. It feels like Alex used the structure of the original Annihilation story to tell a story of how grief transforms people.

      Didn't Lena get infected, by having sex with the duplicate husband in the beginning?

    • @tophers3756
      @tophers3756 Місяць тому +1

      It's not the copy of Lena at the end. It's the original, or as much as she can be. It's clear that original Lena was "infected " by the shimmer and is stated repeatedly that all of them were changing.

      I see from a totally different point of view. The master of puppets behind the mission scout is Ventress because she's dying by cancer and she knows what the zone is capable and she arranges everything to lure Lena because she can shoot and she can learn..but they only find annihilation :-)

    Comparatively few reactors have watched this, and none has understood it as well as Marian. Bravo! The 2014 book of the same title, by Jeff Vandermeer, is far richer and clarifies some questions raised by the movie, while raising other questions. I recommend reading it. Most fans of the book don’t like the movie because the latter was largely simplified into a monster movie. However, I think the movie did as well as could be expected and has many outstanding qualities.

  • @graveyardkey

    The ending of your reaction, is the whole meaning of the movie. The unknown. They talk about religious and extraterrestrial in the beginning. It maybe Annihilation for them in their heads, but for the Shimmer its creation. There’s not supposed to be a distinct answer. Marion nailed it: you don’t know

  • @CaesiusX
    @CaesiusX Місяць тому +8

    I disagree with *Marian.* IMO Lena destroyed the alien with the grenade. But because of her time in that environment she was still contaminated (shown to us by the close up on her eyes at the end).
    I also don't necessarily believe this infestation is intelligent. IMO it is simply a high level organism that infects and adapts. All instinct, no predetermined thought.
    I didn't read the books, but they are some of my daughter's favorites.
    Anyway, right or wrong, those are my thoughts. 🤷🏼‍♂️

    • @tophers3756
      @tophers3756 Місяць тому +2

      That's it. It's NOT the copy at the end. There's nothing to support that it is. On the contrary, we are told and shown repeatedly that everything that comes into contact with The Shimmer changes. So of course she is different at the end, but she isn't the copy.

    I like science fiction like this because I think that if we ever really did find alien life somewhere, we probably wouldn't know what we're looking at or understand it at all. How would we know we if were looking at an alien OR an alien technology OR alien junk like a worn out space suit? In this movie everyone is believably mystified as to what is going on.

    the military person saves the world,// and her self-destruction Jean/thought helps it, The Alien adopting it/made-foolish move I guess, I like movies with multi imagination and improve morals

    17:10 to me, her connection to her husband is irrelevant. The mission was still the mission regardless of the nature or existence of the relationship.

    I give it a comic book ending. The energy is gone, having folded in on itself, but not before mutating/evovling Lena and leaving a replicant behind.
    Kinda like Vision and Wanda.
