  • Beautiful scenery of San Francisco in 1958 shot in 16mm and colorized.
"Jeff Altman of Chicago discovered this beautiful old film reel of his grandfather's, entitled "Alameda 1958." Altman's grandfather, who is pictured in front of the camera and behind the scenes, had traveled to San Francisco via a navy aircraft. Altman also has a reel documenting his grandfather's voyage to SF, which he will be posting on Vimeo soon. Background music by Air -- "Alone In Kyoto.""

As big cities go, it will always be a beautiful one. But, it's gotten so over-crowded and congested and the cost of everything is through the roof, starting with the one over your head. I'll always have an affection for SF and will like to be able to visit it once in a while, but living there is just not for me anymore...

When I was just about 2 years old, my parents and younger sister stayed in SF while getting ready to board a gigantic Navy ship to go to the Phillipines for 2 years. I still have some hazy memories from that time, but the MOST redolent memory was the smell of the diner where we ate breakfast. I can still catch a whiff in my mind, and sometimes walk past a diner that smells like what I recall. Potato hash, bacon and eggs... DONE RIGHT!
I moved back to the Bay Area in 1991 and relocated in 2011 to the Pacific Northwest.
Don't miss the city that much, but it was very dear to my heart and continues to hold so many treasures.

Long hair on a women is her glory.
Our morals have deteriorated. What ever someone does is widely accepted.
Only a remnant will be saved. Come to the Spirit and the Bride, Revelation 22:17. GodBlessU much on your spiritual journey through the desert of faith.
The most precious thing in the desert of faith is, water, spiritual water.

That talks a lot about the culture when people can’t get dressed up and they look like they’re going everywhere in their pajamas. It’s one sign that were are the end of civilization😓

Cherish your luck. North Beach in toto, Chinatown,........, Charles McCabe, the Sausalito ferry (and Sausalito), Ocean Beach, the air...., the weather, the food, the people, the music. Take care.

Back in the 60s when I was teenager there, which was indeed a great time and place to be a teenager, people would talk about how much better SF was in the 20s, 30s, and 40s. There werelots of problems there in the 60s and early 70s that old timers didn't like, including hippies, drugs, and a crime wave during the early 70s that was all people seemed to talk about. Its easy to be nostalgic about a time one didn't live through, but those of us who were there remember it as it was.

I arrived in California as a one year old in 1957. California was heaven for a boy growing up there in the 50's, 60's, and 70's. As a boy I spent time in southern and northern California. I saw the slow decline after the 1990's mainly from the invasion of people from the other side of the southern border. The crime from my home town just north of San Francisco is coming mainly from one group. Dangerous gangs like MS13 run around free, illegals on street corners with stolen SSN numbers wait to get picked up for work, millions of immigrants refusing to speak English, refusing to assimilate into American culture, and millions of immigrants refusing to pledge allegiance to the nation and flag. In the past immigrants loved the USA, today's invasion hate America and the people who created it. I spent a lot of time in San Francisco mainly in the parks and saw a lot of freaky things like hundreds on hyperdermic needles on the ground, tents in the bushes, people in brood daylight pulling their pants down and taking a dump in front of other people. Homeless tent cities are everywhere in the bay area.
I moved out of California 4 months ago to another state. So glad I left, but it's sad what they did to it.

Some reflection, my parents were just engaged, two years later my sister was born Plattsburgh NY, one year later SanAntonio TX my parents saw me for the first time, five yrs later an ‘oops’ happened, little Sis joined us Glen Burnie MD. Fast Fwd to two years ago, Dad passed…Mom still with the living at 85yrs…big Sis like little Sis are Grandma’s and myself, blessed, with a wonderful wife, two daughters and a dog. And so, life has been good, with its tears and laughter, joys and sorrows, love and resentments, with much forgiveness. God has been good and always will be Good! Life is fleeting…we learn from our past, grow in wisdom, and as we take our last breath, by Gods grace, we know where our eternal soul is going, but if there’s any doubt or we just don’t know, seek Christ, He is faithful.

I was born at UC hospital over looking Keizer stadium in ‘52. My grandma was cool, she like the hippies. Haight Ashbury was something that the world was talking about in ‘69.
There was always something cool about the haight, even before the hippies.

A very atmospheric and interesting piece with a well chosen modern soundtrack. I don't believe this has been 'colorized'. It looks like genuine 16mm colour film of the period.

No crowds on Lombard disturbing the residents and no crowds trying to bike and walk along the sidewalk of the Golden Gate bridge at the same time. All changed thanks to the people having to post their image on social media. So sad.

Ah yes, that's the SF I choose to remember. Jack Kerouac's white city. When you could see Coit Tower. But where are the folks? I guess it is from a tourist point of view. Lovely film. I do believe that is the year that Kruschev got away from his handlers and went to Stonestown and SF State for a look-see.

The pyramid was built in 1972 14 years after this film. There was vocal objection to it at the time, including by me. However, I worked for a TA subsidiary at the time it opened in early 1973 and we were among the first to occupy the pyramid. I actually enjoyed working in it at the time.

Great footage! So clear and another world so many years ago! I love films like this. I saw the black man pushing the trolley around to go probably back up the hill. Blacks had jobs like that and you sure didn't see them smoking cigars and eating in probably 5 star dining... or if blacks were even allowed in such restaurants. Thanks for sharing this film!

Goes for Asian people and indigenous people as well as Jewish people and just about any race or culture on earth! Each race has certain cultures and places they tend to gather that can’t be shown in every video! But way to keep racism alive in your mind and spread it like butter.
