Such an iconic player… He even toured one time with the soft rock band Bread, and was introduced as “the Guitar Man” before they launched into the song of the same name. He was extremely restrained and the ultimate gentleman during the show. He played for the song😊.
It is crazy how...as a teenager, when tracks from Steely Dan, and other fantastic musicians of the 60's, 70's, and early 80's, were being blasted all over the radio and TV...just how much our generation just took it for "granted' how good music truly was in that era. I always loved Steely Dan, (and others from that era), but I can today...APPRECIATE, such high quality muscianship, much more today. We didn't truly realize back then...our musical generation was the best that ever existed, and it would NEVER become topped in the future. We really didn't know what we had, at the time. We kind of took it for granted. I now realize...the absolute GENIUS of our generations music....because todays music...flat out, straight out...suxxxx. Steely Dan...is a legend.
I absolutely cannot agree more with your comment. I started learning guitar later in life and I can definitely appreciate the talent and incredible genius that was put into music back then. Today most of the pop music is computer generated with people rapping over the beats, so sad, talentless and soulless.
It's because radio used to play stuff like this. This kind of stuff still exists today, and probably in greater numbers than back then. It's just not "pop" music anymore. The whole industry is dead, music is a grassroots thing now. Go listen to Geordie Greep
@kwyatt261 Generation X literally grew up with the best music ever, or at least the best rock and pop music ever. By my estimation, the best music was produced from 1965 to 1985. The year before I was born til the year I became an adult. And it wasn't hidden, either. They played it on the radio all the time and then came MTV.
My first concert in 1974 at 12 years old with my 16 yr old twin sisters was Steely Dan. I was blown away and hooked to music to this day and Steely Dan is still one of my favorite bands. Grateful I saw them live back in the day😊👍
You're so lucky, in 1974 I heard can't buy a thrill at a party in New Zealand! I was 21 and sold for life but no opportunities to see them live, though we have a pretty good covers band here in Australia that I recently discovered, I won't knock that chance to at least get a taste.
This was the first Steely Dan song I ever heard in middle school in the late 70s and to this day whenever I hear that riff life feels great, never fails.
I remember as a kid trying to learn steely dan songs. There were no tabs or online stuff to show you, it was listen, try to find the chord, pick the needle back up of the album and tey again. Rinse and repeat til you get as close as you can. Made me a much better player and developed a good ear for music. Has served me well in my music journey.
Those two guys plus their ear for the right guy for what part with no compromise apparently still blows my mind how Water, Rip and Donald could hear what didn't exist until they pulled it out of thin air and made incredible art and history. It was a piece of time that's gone for good, and don't think that amount of stars will ever align again.
I play Steely Dan music whenever I'm on the road at night. Almost every, single time! Starts off with, Babylon Sisters. It's amazing what these 2 guys created (though I know one has passed on).
Aja is one of the greatest masterpieces in musical history ranking with any Beethoven or Mozart symphony or Verdi opera or Coltrane jazz. And all the musicians that played on that album are legendary
My biggest regret is not seeing Steely Dan play at chastain park in atlanta prior to Walter dying. It made me promise myself I will go see every band I love since you never know when they’ll pass
The drum part just fills in the rest in your head. What a classic song intro if there ever was one. The Beatles I Feel Fine, Stones Satisfaction it's up there with those great intros.
Not only phenomenal musicians and creators of incredible music, but the sound engineers were always way ahead of the curve! Whenever I'm putting together a vintage soundstage in my home or installing some new car audio gear, I always test things out with some Steely Dan!
So many great guitar players from The Fort. Cornell Dupree, Stephen and Sumter Bruton, James McMurtry, Clint Strong and the list goes on....Aint It Fun Being From Texas!
Looking back to them days the number of absolute genius musicians and the music they would build 😮 So i suppose because they set the bar pretty high it's a tough road these days I'll never forget going to see YES, Steve Hows accoustic guitar solo at Seattle's Coloseum 1976 he was jumping throughout the solo and ripping it, he was finger style, rock , jazz and country, but yeah things have changed.😢
This riff is ominous. It tells you to sit up and get ready.
Legit sounds like a Slayer intro.
@@thisismypickle5164 I'll have to take your word on that 😏
all guitar players will be practicing that passage
Steely Dan chord progressions make me very happy!
Until I try to play them
Yes. The chords period.
They give me goosebumps 😊
Love the dirty work progression
Such an iconic intro.
I agree!❤ my favorite intro out of most my faves from this era ❤
Yes, I wish we were able to see him play it...shitty camera work.

Aja is one of the greatest albums ever made. Still sounds fresh today . I first bought it on 8 track tape. Thats how old it is.
Holy moly!!! You still got your fuzzy dice and feathered roach clips? 😂😂😂
I bought it on cassette at Howard Johnson's on the PA Turnpike in 78. In the next few hours my taste in music was massively improved.
I still have my original aja LP, turntable, amp and speakers from college during the ‘70’s and still blast it!
AJA - Top 10 Albums last 50 years .
Absolute masterpiece !
🤗🎷🏆👍
I bought it in '77

100% Agree!

@baberoot1998 We were spoiled. Surrounded by great music. Even the bad music from the time is better than today's

I remember listening to Steely Dan as a kid knowing it was something more special than anything else on the radio at that time.
God damn that gives me chills hearing that in isolation

Dean Parks is the man!
One of the best bands ever.❤❤❤❤❤❤
Yes ❤
Hmmm. 🤔
Well, no doubt about the greatness of Becker and Fagan, but they certainly had a unique idea of what a band is Nd isn't
Just more evidence that Dean Parks is one of the most eloquent and brilliant guitar players of our age.
Thank you. I'm thinking Skunk Baxter.

Wow, lucky
That’s where I play it first position I saw Rick Beato playing it up around the 5th fret Dean Parks and Larry Carlton can’t get any better 🎸🎸🎸
Love Steely Dan because they play the weirdest chords ever! I would need a book to tell you what chords they play!
This is one of my favorites to play. It never gets old or tired.
I’ve spent the last 10 learning it and indeed as fun as it gets!
@@markkindermannart4028
Yrs?
@@SuperSedingAngeL-yr0 days lol
I heard Fagan describe that as "a sort of swampy, Gregorian chant kinda thing." Whatever, it's awesome.
The untouchable jazz pop album of all time. Timeless…and will always be. That guitar part is a microcosm of it.
And I’ll put the drum fill in right after that intro. That into gives me the chills, incredible playing.
Wow! That’s quite a production move!
Dang, that semi-hollow JTG looks so rad
Let's not forget how equally good the lead run is on this track just exceptional!
Gives me goosebumps ❤
That is one of the greatest songs ever.
Gold star example of music composition. Creativity over technical ability.
Aja, my favorite album of all time !!!!!
True Steely Dan Fan !!!!! 😘👏😘
Thanks to the DP who felt his cinematic camera move was more important than showing us the chord fingerings. 😂
If you see the full video (which this is clipped from) you can see the entire right and left hands.
Cry more. Or use your ears.
@@commontater8630I am fine with using my ears ...but this is video, not radio smart ass
Such an iconic song and musician.
So clean 🤩
Even a die hard metal and hard rock fan such as myself can appreciate and love this riff 🎸🎶😁🥰
That's badass. 🤟 And the tracking, only they would've done that. Nutty. Love it.
Who else heard the chimy bell sounds after that 1st part?
So good. Brilliant guitar composition. Love it!
Look how delicate and beautiful he plays!

No words to express how much this song moves me - SD is one of the greatest …

Brilliant guitar master level
One of my favorites of all times 2thumbs up..
What a damn great band! One of my all time favorite groups! They had some serious hits in the 70's and 80's.
EXCELLENT. WALTER BECKER
Steely Dan was a ritual for me. Sunday noon time, Crack a beer and put SD on for the day 😊
Beautiful !!!
I love that track! Just hearing that lick has the chorus rolling through my head.
And the camera cuts to his face perfect
It’s the unwritten rule for camera people shooting musicians. If there is guitar solo - focus in the bass player lol

That's one of cleanest, smudge free guitars I've ever seen!
Nice guitar work. Great song.
SD were such incredible musicians - each really stands out when ya isolate the instruments!
ICONIC
I love the playing and the tune!
One of the best intros
Dean’s incredible.
Absolutely a Landmark (even if "oddest" :-) intro - and rhythm part!
Imo the intro isn't even that odd when compared to bands like King Crimson
So original!
So unique!
Ringing the guitar is awesome

Just a fantastic hit....hits every age...
1980’s bump music for the Audio Labs stereo store commercials in Des Moines. So cool!
I grew up with that song and that intro! The feelings that intro and other songs like that stir for me are undescribable! Thank you for that! 😊

Beautiful
So beautiful 😍. Reminds me of a time with a travel agent, and "Countdown to Ecstasy".
Dean Parks is one of the most talented multi-instrumentalists I have met in the music business and is a genuinely nice person.
