For some reason I just watched the 57th GCN how to clean your bike video. Interestingly each one uses slightly different stuff.
Suggestion: Why dont you guys make a video about bike wash??
If you use wax on your paint, definitely use the car wash soap! Dish soap will strip wax off of the bike.
Another huge reason to use car wash soap is that it contains lubricants which will help prevent any dirt or grime grinding across your paint wearing it down.
As for drying, I use the same method that I use on the motorbike. Leaf blower. 30 seconds and jobs done
So many things I can do toward bike maintenance now,
that I would not have touched before I started watching all of you.
These videos make life a lot easier. Thank you for the work
you folks put into these episodes. It's appreciated.
Jon, you will not be disappointed.. my bike is shiny clean after the winter... thanks to a winter bike
Good man
I really enjoy how this video doesn’t use branded bike cleaning supplies and is all stuff you can get from a DIY or auto store. Great knowing we can get a sparkling clean with commonplace items.
Good to know I’am not the only one who gets quite excited when washing his bike. Thanks for the clean spirit tip, still a bit sceptic to damage my paintwork. #lifeasabikegeek #gcntech
"Budget Conscious" - Cleans Dura-Ace components.... 😂😂😂
yeah with super cheap pedals haha
and the "budget" Park Tool stand
Yea the stand is sort of my problem when cleaning cant really remove my wheels
Budget conscious Di2! Just imagine how much he's saved on gear cables over the last year or so, it's the groupset that just keeps giving.
Great item to have in our weekender horse trailer!
It amazes me that no bike cleaning video mentions a pressure garden spray. I live in an apartment building and it's my only option. It's ideal if you can't run hose and they are dirt cheap :-D
A tip if you don't have a hose: Buy a cheap pressure sprayer (normally sold at garden stores for spraying pesticides and whatnot) and fill it with warm(ish) water and soap, it works brilliantly
Can't believe I watched the whole thing. Not disappointed.. thumbs up.
5:55 when for dirty water you can also just use the 2 bucket method, 1 bucket of soapy and 1 bucket that you use to clean off the sponge, so that the soapy doesn't get too dirty
I just finished washing my chain and cassette for the first time ever. FeelsGoodMan. :D
I use degreaser, old toothbrush, hose with adjustable pressure, and paper towels. Bike looks like new too! nice video. I'm gonna start doing the lube in the cables from now on!
Nice tag heuer f1! Ideal beater watch for this job
I love his cleaning/maintenance/repeair expertise!
Cheers Ivan!
Thanks Jon. Winter is coming soon to the southern hemisphere, but my chain needed it.
This might only work on a bike with a gloss finish, but A light coat of GT85 (or similar Teflon-containing spray) on the frame makes road grime a little easier to wash away after a wet ride.
Got to be careful not to get it on the brakes or the times though
Proud of using environmental friendly clean spirit but get rid of the little sponge after every wash - nice logic :D
Still cool video!
Love the watering can as a alternative of hose
Good tip about the rear dummy hub, nice work!
Little hack instead of a hose pipe is using a large bidon. Granted it takes a couple refills but you can control the force and does the job well for me.
I judge others cleaning abilities solely on the rear cassette. Sparkling clean cassette and you know the rest is clean!
eh man some of us are new to the game and not really familiar with how to open the rear casette and wash it clean. Cut us some lack we try our best.
Now is the time to embrace it!
Also I find taking your watch off helps, I have scratches on old frames because of that.
I have scratches on old watches because of that.. ;-)
New to your channel, wish I had discovered it earlier, about 20 years earlier! A great channel. All the best from NZ😷
How many bike wash videos are you going to make haha. I'll still watch them all either way...
How would Teresa May go about cleaning a bike Boris? 🤔
If you keep watching GCN no wonder Brexit still isn't anywhere near sorted.
@@simonguard5087 It's not my responsibility for sorting out Brexit. That's down to the old hag called Theresa...
"Fuck bike washing!" - Boris Johnson
@@treyquattro Makes a change from him fucking someone else's missus.
The stand makes things SO much easier and WD40 is fine if you soap and rinse off properly.
Portable garden pressure spray will work much better than a watering can :) (they're super cheap too) for those who do not have access to a hose
Not a big fan for lubing cables. It'll just be a dirt magnet. Best way to go about it is to clean and dry them. Cable housing is lined with PTFE, lubing them will attract dirt and grit which defeats the purpose of actually lubing them.
Anyone else get the hunch that Jon has really wicked dance skills (beginning at 9.47)?
I used to teach people how to Moonwalk and Foxtrot
GCN Tech I can see the Foxtrot here for sure! Upcoming feature, you teaching the riders OR presenters how to moonwalk!
Love your vid. You make washing look so much fun.
Jon's word of the year: elbow grease!
I have to clean my bicycles and motorcycles, so always looking for tips...so in return I have a tip for you :-) I do not have any affiliation with any company, so I'm not paid to say this lol.
Use Dawn Ultra Powerwash spray dish soap...cleans easy-peasy...EVERYthing...including chains, cogs/cassettes/grime and dirt (and baby ducklings covered in oil) so very fast and easy. IT even cleans the chain grease off the brushes lol. Just start from the top down. Spray wipe/scrub rinse...oh ya..dishes too ;-)
I don't even have a bike but I still watch these videos 😂😂😂
Saheeb Yusuf you should get a bike
@@stirfry3069 Yup.
TwiSteR I should ride my bike more
Neil is going to be so angry when he finds out where his water bottle ended up... 🤭
With a high-end car wash soap that had a wax in it, the disc brakes accumulated a coating that promoted slight squealing.
what's the GCN Tech take on waxing your carbon bike? I was told that waxing with car polish every few months is a good idea. Haven't done it yet, but wipe it down after every ride.
I miss this kind of videos
How do you clean the things you use to clean.. ie. the brushes and rags and buckets?
How long 'til Jon mentions elbow grease?
5:30 apparently
Hi john, I got some queries
Question:
1. Do you usually wear ur rolex watch while cleaning the bike?
2. Is there no treatment for the cockpit area?
3. How long do you wait for lubricate the chain, after using the water displacement?
4. How often should you clean the bike, if it's used for commuting 40 KM (roundtrip)?
Thanks in advance
#gcntech
1. Its a Tag, not a Rolex.
Jon Cannings i was wondering if it was a Chris Ward.
Hi, how come you didn't use any "water displacement fluid" before adding lube to the chain? Can you show that part of the process please? Thank you!
Sponges are not advised to be used to wash cars. You need to use a microfiber wash mitt.
The same goes for your bike paint.
If any debris gets stuck in that sponge, it doesn't disappear into the sponge but just gets stuck on the outer layer where it then scratches your paintwork.
@GCN Tech We need some guest videos by Jon Cannings at some point, feel like he caters to a slightly more mature / experienced audience (which I appreciate)
Have a BMC Granfondo GF01, with Campagnolo Athena 11 Electronic Power Shift. Any special instructions you can recommend on how to wash this particular bicycle. Thanks
I need bike repair stand and that yard.
Great wind testing video. I can’t believe you didn’t test the cycling cap, flap up or down 🤦🏻♂️🤣
Please consider biodegradable sponges if you intend to use them once and then dispose of them. Clean bike and clean planet.
Bello sfondo per video e spiegazione, ben fatto, per me e molto simpatico; solo un tavolino e metti sopra un fiore di vaso; è di bella cornice e sempre colore ben accostato
Cleaning bike with tag heuer on :D
Ring the BELL! That's a SUPER NICE!!!!
Question.. isn't it easier and better to clean the bike deeply by removing the chain and crankset? The problem is that my new bike has a different more "modern" bottom bracket rather than the usual threaded bb.. and my crank axle is different too. And i guess I'm wondering if the parts are going to last longer if i don't remove them when doing deeper cleaning
I have internal cable routing? Won't the water sit still and make the cables be in the water for a long time?
Arent there two videos already on GCN about washing your bike? There are...but hey...lets make another one which was never necessary in the first place. You guys have been running out of ideas for a while now....i would never have thought about using a substitute for a 'hose pipe' woaow!! The suggestion of using a 'watering can'....how about a jug? Or a bucket? Or a large cup????
I read many comments in cycling boards to never use degreaser on the chain, because you not only wash out the dirt but also the grease that sits deep in the chain that you can never get back and that degreasing therefore would ultimately ruin your chain quite quickly. They suggested to clean it with diesel instead and to relube it with only a thin oil film by putting oil on a piece of cloth and pulling the chain throughh the cloth
As I am pretty new to the entire cycling stuff - I only had a lowly maintained trekking bike (with fenders and light and luggage carrier and other forbidden items), so I am a bit confused. Can I degrease my chain and then relube it with oil without problems or not?
new series of capron, Jon? I never saw this grey band on the right side.
My Alloy frame (Palace:R) has a hole in the seat tube, right above the BB, for electronic groups, which I am not using. Won't it rust from the inside if I hose the frame like you do in this vid and the water forms a lake and sits there ? I haven't found an exit hole yet so I assume any water that goes in through that one hole will have to evaporate from there
What do you suggest for those that don’t have a £200+ bike stand when washing your bike?
I use Palmolive peach for the smell Apple is also a good smell gotta scrub a bit harder but peachy flavoured bike give myself a thumbs up
Mmm, bears like the fruity smells too.
@@newttella1043 lol
Someone dropped a jar of that on the bike path hahah💩💩💩
Why did you use a gmbn cup as a degreaser tub
What are you using as a spacer to hold your chain?
What’s the best way to get the bit of the frame behind the chainset? I normally work the sponge in the gap and spin the cranks but wondered if there’s a more finger friendly way lol
Would you use a wax shampoo on a matt frame? I thought that would be exactly what not to do
Same as for the car, use 2 bucket system!;)
Have you noticed that over cleaning your bike with water may cause issues ? Ie a dear friend running a Cannondale super six washes his bike twice a week and as a result in 3-4 months he manged to destroy his wheel bearings and his bottom bracket as well . This was not caused by rain water . It was caused by him '' over washing '' his bike
Wait really?
So what's the recommendation amount of wash?
Once per month? Or even twice per year?
@@hackerhacker3667 personaly I stopped washing the bike with water . I use a combo of wet and dry cloths and lot of labour lol . And I just bought a cheap but reliable '' winter bike '' which I will use for the rainy days and my indoor trainer
@@theodoros1126 for a comment that stands for over 1 month, you actually do reply after a long time.
Thanks for the tip👍👍👍👍👍
Buat yeah, how often do you wash your bike?
@@hackerhacker3667 sorry it just came up on my pc . I never saw your comment . mate I never wash my bike . I love it too much to risk my bearings .
@@theodoros1126
Ok no problems 🥰
Sorry for a late comment, but I also have a matt finish Orbea (carbon fibre), is it safe to use wd40 on that to clean up those oily/fingerpeint type marks? I don't want to go stripping the matt paint lol.
Now how do u clean a disc bike? Not that I have one or anything... I’m just curious
which bike stand are you using?
Hello, if I wax my chain, what changes to instruction in video on cleaning your bike would you suggest I make?
Apply Ballistol-Oil afterwards (everywhere except braking area, tires, etc) and your bike will be shiny like never before
Can you get the bar tape wet?
Did Simon Richardson lend you the chain keeper?
Hey GCN! Instead of the same video all over, how about a bike wash video in weird places, like a bathtub.
Same rules just in a bath tub 🤔
Is it really okay applying degreaser in the cogs without removing it? Does it affect the freehub or not?
It's nice to see you are environmentally friendly with your clean spirit. But the disposable sponges you used on the chain contain a lot of plastic. You could instead use an "unsponge" made of something else. Probably more expensive though. :(
Jon, how can I make sure I get all the water out of the insides of my deep section wheels??? I hear water sloshing about after cleaning them!
You don't remove the "water dispersion liquid" (WD40?) before applying lube to the chain?
Asking because I have to clean my bike in temperatures well below freezing during winter, have used the WD40 for that purpose...but thought that /also/ needed to be off the chain before lubing.
Should I remove my power meter and my speed censor before I do this?
I need help. I cleaned my bike today and accidentally got some bike protect on my brake disc's. I tryed wiping it of but there is still a big difference in braking. Will it just use off over some time riding carefully or is there a other way?
Hey GCN tech!!!
Does the spirit remove the grease as good as bike specific degreaser?
Is car shampoo waxy for rim brakes?
What bike stand is that? Never seen one like that before, looks very handy.
Park Tool PRS 22 I think
hi, it is this www.parktool.com/product/team-issue-repair-stand-prs-22-2?category=Portable from Park Tool. Thanks Jon
Great, thanks for the info!
If you use WD40 on the chain to get rid of water, how long do you have to wait before applying your regular chain lubricant?
Thanks.
Not too long, the solvent in wd40 evaporates in minutes. Just run chain through a rag to get the dirt that the wd40 would've pushed out and you can lube after that.
If you apply *paraffin wax lube* to your chain instead of oil, your bike will need less chain and cassette cleaning. Oil gets the chain and cassette so cruddy and messy.
how do you clean the brushes?
Hi GCN, what bike stand is this?
www.parktool.com/product/team-issue-repair-stand-prs-22-2?category=Portable cheers, Jon
I never wash the bike this way, and never leave the cassette on the wheel when cleaning it. Mind you, wax works wonders. No more greasy drivetrain!
Wow...we need 11 minute videos on how to wash videos...wow.
Ok...let me get this sequence right... 1) put on degreaser 2) wash your bike and wheel rims (and potentially disc brake rotors) 3) use a brush that spatters degreaser/oil mix all over the rims/brake tracks/discs/clean bike, (and in SImon's old videos do this then spray everything including the braking surfaces with a Muc off Teflon containing water displacing spray) 4) start over to get the spatter off the finish and disks/brake tracks etc.
On my disc wheel bike I wrap the discs in household cling wrap and do them after the oil spray/wax/wd 40 whatever is out of the picture... and ill let the degreaser sit for a while then do the chain and cassette...then wash the bike and any spatter that may have happened during the drivetrain cleaning is a non issue. also a chain clearer or just using a wax lube like paraffin or squirt changes the amount of drivetrain cleaning by a lot.
PS... love the channel
5 minute bike wash...
1. Buy a pressure washer
2. Use the pressure washer
No scrubbing
No scratching
No fuss
It's what the pros use in EWS, World Cup Downhill, Pro motocross and nearly every other form of dirt racing.
No, it won't hurt your seals unless you hold the nozzle directly on the seal.
How could it be possible to damage paint with a sponge or water spray? I can't see this as remotely possible.
whats the name of that bike-stand?
Hi, it's this www.parktool.com/product/team-issue-repair-stand-prs-22-2?category=Portable Thanks, Jon
I usually remove all the drive train and wash it everything
Where are you guys based?
Man, I need a good stand. I use my bike rack on the car or my bike holder to clean.
Bike rack on car is a good idea😀. If your car is old,or it’s a “quick thing”
Forget to put it in the highest gear to remove the wheel? 😝 glad I’m not the only one 🤣
