when people say "it was too slow", I ask "Do you mean it dragged?" If they aanser "no" then it wasn't slow. There's a difference between MM tempo and pulse. It takes a great musician, like Celibidache , to play at slow MMs as he does but to keep the music going forward. What he gains, is in the textures, the inner parts have time to phrase, you hear so much more of what is happening in the orchestra. The inner parts have space to breathe.
There is a 1982 Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart performance also on YT. The tempos are very similar. This is the way Celibidache conceived the piece.
Magnifique !
Magnificent. Pardon the travesty of the beer advert, but Celi get to parts other conductors can't reach. Without comparison. Love his music. Thank you for the post.
Interesting performance. I swear I hear a dog bark at 1:07 ??? The orchestra itself is not top quality, but there is something very heartfelt about this performance that others lack. I love the slow tempo. Thank you for posting this video.
The 'dog bark' makes me laugh! It was a very new orchestra when this was recorded and in a country where Franco was still supreme. Educational opportunities were few and far between. I worked with many of the musicians seen here and there was quite rightly a sense of great pride that something special had been created. The last founding member of the orchestra retired only relatively recently.
In 984 he shocked the New York audience including those movers and shakers of the American classical music industry with a student orchestra - The Curtis.

So beautiful you said! The music flows... Love Celibidache and I am so proud he is romanian ❤

Platon Buddha and Celibidache are something for me.

Simply magic . When you think that he was an invited conductor, it is amazing what he got from these musicians.

Celibidache gets you to listen to parts which you simply do not hear in other interpretations! Just magic.
Parcă auzi vocea compozitorului in interpretarea maestrului Celibidache.
Magnific!
Grande el Maestro...
Celibidache is truly amazing.
Celibidache =GENIU
Sublime.
This is one of my favorite symphony .
good. But, quale non è favorita ?

Karajan? Dem fehlt doch jeder Funken Geist. Wie sollte der Beethoven verstehen können?
SIEMPRE CON SENSIBILIDAD Y CLASE DON SERGIU.
Grande Máximo Muñoz!!! ¡Qué bien fraseado!
Great Conductor undoubtedly, this was always his style, conducting practically all works very slow, for this symphony in particular i think it is OK.
marcelouz1 Always these complaints about his tempos. His interpretations are inspiring to me.
@@genevoce8548These complaints are right. Listen to the great Costantin Silvestri
It's quite interesting to watch Celi's rehearsals on the net.

It is correct. It seems that a dog is barking at 1.07: Carsten Schjørring
Second rate orchestra? Not a problem Celibidache to the rescue!

Slow,deep,charming performance.
I like the hornist with sunglasses !
29:04 oboe is one bar too early... But that rather funny lapse doesn't ruin that great rendition at all!

1:07
very nervous oboe player, wrong entry at bar n. 344 in the 3rd mv. and horn very insecure before that
