He told me he would NEVER have predicted back in 1950s that India would triple/quadruple its population AND be self-sufficient in food production. Goes to show you that all the famines and underdevelopment were the result of the British colonizers, and not because of scarcity or population or any such nonsense.

India's growth has dropped from an average of 8% during 2004-2010 to an average of 4% now. Ranking will improve of course because closely above us were nations that are already developed, and by definition do not need or have this kind of growth. Don't forget that China still adds an entire India to its economy every 3-5 years.

Хотя я бы пошел дальше и считаю, что в реальности экономика Китая крупнее экономики США в 3-4 раза. Население Китая больше в 4 раза, средний китаец производит продукции больше, чем средний американец. Соответственно в 3-4 раза это ещё скромно. Номинально, экономика США больше, но больше она за счёт дутого фондового рынка(80% всего объема американской экономики), раздутых зарплат, цен, стоимости услуг. Если уравнять эти стоимости, Китай окажется в 3-5 раз крупнее.

The US population is 3rd highest in the world, so there is a double hurdle for all but 2 countries to overcome.

I was always under the impression if a country's economy was doing very well, the people of that country is also doing well financially and inflation is also low. So if America has got the best gdp, why are there so many homeless people there and why is their inflation so high that people can't even afford to pay rent.
because of dumb political decisions.. we have nearly quit manufacturing, importing most of our goods from China (causing their income to skyrocket) the lack of exports also drives costs up.. crooked lending practices, artificial inflation through forced wage increases and housing bubbles all cause snowball effects too.. most of our homelessness is in a small handful of mismanaged cities that cater to the wealthy and ignore the needy. LA, NYC, Chicago and a few others make up over half the homelessness in the country

China began opening up their economy in late 70s, 1978 to be exact, so it took them over 40 years to get where they are today, stunning performance nonetheless, kudos to hard working people of China. India on the other hand started late, 1991 is when India started to open up its economy.

@@seanthe100 It probably needs to be repeated again - the PPP methodology is not cheap and was developed specifically for comparing the results of national economies closer to comparing in universal physical units: tons of ore and cement, barrels of diesel, pieces of cakes, umbrellas, cars, bulldozers, ships, etc. - all of the same quality. GDP(PPP) shows the real strength/production capacity of the national economies. The USA is the only country for which the PPP adjustment to the amount of GDP in current $$ is equal to 1 by default. I hope I don't need to return to this issue again.
PPP adjustment has some political consequencies. The opinions of politicians representing larger economies (PPP) are naturally taken with greater weight by others than those of "lesser" politicians (although the sense of what they say ought to be at the first place, imo).
You are right that international financial flows that are serviced at international exchange rates make sense to be measured in current dollars or other reserve currencies (and no one has questioned this). However, external debt is only one aspect of economic development. There are countries with very little external debt, for example, Saudi Arabia and Russia. The size of external debt is a very sensitive aspect specifically for the group of countries of the global North (Japan, Italy, as well as the United States), which had relatively easier access to international loans in previous decades, and in recent years have borrowed at such a speed like there is no tomorrow and the time to pay the debt will never come.

Хотя я бы пошел дальше и считаю, что в реальности экономика Китая крупнее экономики США в 3-4 раза. Население Китая больше в 4 раза, средний китаец производит продукции больше, чем средний американец. Соответственно в 3-4 раза это ещё скромно.
Номинально, экономика США больше, но больше она за счёт дутого фондового рынка(80% всего объема американской экономики), раздутых зарплат, цен, стоимости услуг. Если уравнять эти стоимости, Китай окажется в 3-5 раз крупнее.

There is no "conspiracy" to keep some country on top. The per capita GDP and population size is just far greater than so many countries that to pass the USA required not just economic growth but population growth. Japan has had less than 1/2 the US population since the 1970s and is too crowded to increase population much. The USSR had a economy that invested too much in the military to grow their economic capacity. The US population is 3rd highest in the world, so there is a double hurdle for all but 2 countries to overcome.

So if America has got the best gdp, why are there so many homeless people there and why is their inflation so high that people can't even afford to pay rent.
because of dumb political decisions.. we have nearly quit manufacturing, importing most of our goods from China (causing their income to skyrocket) the lack of exports also drives costs up.. crooked lending practices, artificial inflation through forced wage increases and housing bubbles all cause snowball effects too.. most of our homelessness is in a small handful of mismanaged cities that cater to the wealthy and ignore the needy. LA, NYC, Chicago and a few others make up over half the homelessness in the country

No sé... Me parece un índice algo discrecional el de "economía más poderosa"... Sobre todo porque quien lídera ese ranking tiene una deuda de 32.000.000 billones de dólares y ya no saben cómo hacer para fabricar guerras y se siga sosteniendo la.... "economía más poderosa del mundo"
