We don't wear Stetson in Australia, we have our very own original cowboy hat made from rabbit felt and it's called "Akubra" .
Thank you I cringe when Rob said that 😊
I didnt know there was any difference. I shall have to explore and learn about them now!
@@CharlieandRob
12 to 14 rabbits makes one Akubra.
@@CharlieandRob They have some similarities, but they are quite different.
@@xymonau2468 The Stetsons are way bigger in width and higher and look ridiculous but I suppose that’s what Americans like, everything has to be bigger to fit there huge egos.. well the ones I have encountered over the years have 😊🙄
I submitted an artwork to the Melbourne show when I was in high school and got 4th place. The school vice principal took the artwork and had it framed and hung it in her office without asking me. I had made it as a gift for my mother, so on my last day of school about a minute before I left forever I went into her office when she wasn’t there and took it back.
Good for you, that was pretty cheeky to just take your property and claim it on the Principal's behalf. At least you didn't have to get it framed for your Mum👍
And then burned the school down ?
It sounds like you missed one of the other great demonstrations or competitions at the show... the Wood Chop.... if you ever think "elite athlete" then see David Foster... then watch as he (or one of his family) swings an axe, pulls a saw, and otherwise cuts through timber... watching wood chips flying the size of back logs.
Charlie's got an angelic halo in the thumbnail! A well placed ferris wheel LOL
haha I didnt even notice
The hats are not Stetsons, they are Akubras.
Some of them were.
Some were definitely Stetson 'style'. Akubras don't have those swept up sides.
Those hats were probably Australian Akubras, not US Stetsons. At least I hope so!
Stetsons? Rob, we have Akubras!!!! Cricky!
Crikey mate!
Didnt know there was a difference
It's very similar to the Sydney Royal Easter Show it gets packed. Also Sydney Royal Easter show does have largest pumpkin display
Years ago when I lived in Sydney I used to get to the show early, grab a locker, go get the show bags I wanted for my nieces and nephews, shove them in the locker then go enjoy the rest of the day. Then just grab the show bags on the way out.
All the capital cities' Royal Shows are a fun day out, Melbourne is no exception.
now this is what i have been looking forward to your reaction to the melbourne show
More horses at Sydney Show, more cattle and handcrafts at the Hobart Show - and, I'm now starving!! 😋👍
Lots of handcrafts there, they didn't show any on the vlog. I judged the crochet this year.
@@marleemumu So glad to hear that, these country traditions should be respected and passed down, especially as the world focus is changing! I have noticed that more Ukrainians are paying more attention to their history and craft, and their resourcefulness should be a lesson to all those who need the newest and best possessions! The best possessions are the ones with memories and connections! 🤗
That show bag pavilion was an eye opener... Have never seen that many show bags for adults before.
Apart from the animals... it's becoming a bit more city centric now.
The Melb show looks like it's a lot more spacious than the new Sydney one at Homebush.
One thing I always have at the show are the CWA scones & cream. Never have it otherwise.
The woodchopping is my favourite event followed by ring events.
Good Vlog for someone who hasn't been to the Melb show.
Yes, you have to have scones from the CWA!
Bertie Beetle was a good choice, it has been a favorite for over 50 years.
You bought a Bertie Beetle show bag? You are now an honorary Australian.
Never been to the Melbourne show. But it looks pretty much the same as the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
We also have local shows in towns across Aus, that are like a smaller version of these big shows. I havn't been to one in yonks, but I know that one near where I grew up was always about a month after the Sydney Show, and they would sell the same showbags but for cheaper!
Oh wow, it doesn’t look too over crowded ….. normally it’s shoulder to shoulder and can’t breathe
That’s what I cam to say :)😊
Cowboys. Stetsons. American terms. Others have stated too - The hats would be Akubras. The animal handlers would be the farmers breeders grooms etc. The term cowboy isnt used theyre either stockmen ringers jackeroos jilleroos depending where you are and what theyre doing.
Dont mean to criticise guys. I luv your vlogs. Much better research and reactions than many. And at least you came out and saw stuff for yourself. Its easy to equate what youre looking at with American stuff - ranches stetsons cowboys etc - you'd see on TV or movies. Theyre similar but not the same thing. Be interesting to find a video that features cattle or sheep ""stations" or properties and how theyre run or managed. Or even see if you can squeeze a few days on a working cattle station while youre in the NT to see and experience the reai outback. Lots of looooong distances to travel. Just how it is. And dont travel there in the wet season ie Nov to April. Temperature 25-33° c humidity 98%. Average wet season rainfall this year 1727 mm. Dry season is May to Oct best usually June-July. Pack hats light weight long sleeved shirts sunscreen and fly repellant. To prevent that blistered bitten tourrist look 😉 Sorry bit off track for this vid. But keep up your vids.
It is a very long time since I went to the show probably pre 1979. The entire place is now different with open airy buildings wide passages. In my times there, the show bags were a very tight packed old style shed with two long ailes with the show bag booths. Usually so tight packed you had almost to fight your way through. Sadly the show bags in my time were no longer really "show bags" as originally defined. Samples provided at bare base cost, by product manufacturers at break even or even some lower cost written off under promotion/advertising cosr. My times and probably now the show bags are a profit business in it self, much beyond many families budgets, not unusual to satisfy children demands costing over $100 on bags alone. Much of over shop lolly/chocolate prices and junky plastic toys or comics. Though I do understand that there is rather strict auditing to prevent excessive rip off pricing. From what I saw in your video some bags are looking to provide value content. As a child of course the sweets chocolates and junky toys even the Magician bag with cheap playing cards, invisible ink and really crazy tricks were the main goal. Now it seems bags are adult orient no longer aimed at children only.
My sister for about 25 years showed Lhasa Apso dogs and briefly also Chihuahuas at the Royal Shows in Mrlbourne Sydney and Adelaide plus a number of country Agricultural shows, plus various Dog Club shows. Got lots of ribbons over the years and we had a male "Stud" Lhasa Apso we adopted from an elderly dog breeder/show person who passed away, the two daughters had numerous dogs already so sought others to adopt some, as the father had over 30 dogs of about 4 breeds. So too much for the daughters, who wanted them with people they knew would a) look after them b) still show and breed them. Our stud earned many tens of thousand dollars, a single mating was over $2000 from memory. He was regularly winning 1st place and Best in Show ribbons.
The probable reason you found no cats, is that in the past the dogs and cats were scheduled on different days of show week, using the same dog/cat hall. I presume that is still done.
I am glad that you had very fine weather, not too cold, sunny, but not over hot. I have been at the show on a day the temperature was over 40°C, and as the shed and halls were far more primitive and tight it got hard for the entire day shuffling around there. VERY smelly around sheep, goat and cattle/cow areas. Final day of the show always finished late evening with a big fireworks display, meaning getting home was well after 1AM. We used to have a SHOW DAY public/school holiday which I think the Labor government cancelled some years ago.
Glad that you had enjoyable fun time 👍👏👏
My biggest tip for the Melb show would be to get in and get your showbags early, then stash them in one of the lockers that are practically hidden in an underpass around the corner from the livestock pavilion. Then go back and collect them after the fireworks.
Good weather and a good day at the Show. Looks like you enjoyed it.
Growing up in the country and going to a country Aussie school, every year we raised a couple of steers at school for the show. These became so tame like pets as they were washed and groomed, and lead about. Sadly they get slaughtered right after the showing there so they can also get rated on their meat. Australian Australorp chickens are very gentle and really like humans. Mine prefer hanging out with me rather then with each other, that breed I think has the world record for a chicken laying the most eggs.
You are right, Australorps lay more eggs per year than almost all other breeds. They have become quite popular in the U.S..
Being from Sydney I go to the Sydney Royal Easter Show each year. Have never been to the Melbourne show but going off your video a lot of the same things eg the show bags, rides etc
The main arena used to be in the middle it was a 700 meters old harness racing track, they did the redeployment about 15 years ago, not for the better IMO there used to be a chairlift that went from one end of the Showgrounds to the other
Thanks for exploring for me 😊
Used to always get the Bertie Beatle Show bag 😁Annual family ritual As young children we loved it all
Good to see you had a great time at the Melbourne show 💯👍
Great watching you guys exploring the RMS. I haven't been in 30 years, now I don't need to😜. Bertie Beetle show bags were always the best along with the Magic ones!
We have basenjis, had them for 40 years as a breed we love them. Not really well known in Australia, we have always had a male and female
What an absolutely fun day 😃 👏.
Did you see the wood chopping??
SKILLS!!
We didn't actually see that
My favourite showbags are, the licorice, darrell lea and then one of the woman’s ones, just depending what was in them. So glad you had a great time. Yum on the Dutch pancakes, you’ve made my mouth water, and I would enjoy them with a nice cup of coffee.
Such lovely doggies.
If you loved this weather, next time come in November. Glad you got the Bertie Beetle showbag ❤️ Who noticed how chilled Rob got after a few nips of alcohol 😊
I was there last Christmas, it was cold. THANKS MELBOURNE for your south pole temperatures
show bags are basically your favourite thing in the world as a kid in Melbourne..
Yes, get chickens. Silkies make the best little pets & they give you cute little eggs. Love you guys. Thank you for showing us around the Melbourne Show.
6:44. THAT reminds me of the Sydney Royal Easter Show when I was a kid.
Akubra hat, you should have bought one, little boys usually go home with one from the show! And they should have had large pumpkins and other vegetables and fruit on show, plus sheep shearing, milking cows, etc!
To be fair most people had those awful cheap pink ones!
When you were testing the pineapple drink, in the background is a sign “best friends”.
Perfect
Well thats what me and Chaz are! :D
Haven’t been to the Melbourne Show since the 1990’s geez it’s changed a lot from my memories, thanks guys for the upload, very informative and particularly enjoyed the humour.
What an amazing show with soooo much going on ❤ I love all the animal bits 😊😊
I was happy that you enjoyed yourselves at some of the fun places around Melbourne. Hopefully you'll get to see lots more places in Victoria. 😊
That tan tote bag that came with yours is a good buy Charli, I got the same one a few years back in a grey colour and used it for my everyday work carry all for over a year and it’s still in good condition. That’s so funny how you didn’t get the Stella Athletica bag because they didn’t have the water bottle - exact same thing happened to me, I eventually got one another year 😆. That Conscious Store one looked gorgeous! I’ll look for them at the Sydney show next year. The Womens Weekly one always does have a lot of coupons which is why they value them so high but even if like me you never use the coupons you still get a ton of great stuff. Those bags all looked good there, I can’t wait to go to the show again, it’s been a few years.
I’m doing a 4 months with no takeaway, and these vlogs with all this good food is killing me.
We do eat a lot of food on these :D
In the 70s about 13 years old We use to go home with about 15 or 20 showbags .
Hi charlie and rob i hope you are enjoying yourselves at the melbourne show hope you grab some good showbags nice to see some english people have fun kym
Fun at the Show! Yes- the Bertie Beetle Bags are a Classic. Used to be able to buy BB's in the 'shops' - now ONLY at a Show! Lot's of people shouted about that - but actually, last I got some couldn't recall what all the fuss was about. Perhaps my Choc tastes have 'gone gourmet' with age!
Chickens - Mine are little cute Bantams [ Rhode Isl Red Mini's ]. I did get a couple of Silkie Pullets too - but was LIED to. 'Bout a month later - Yes- at Stupid O'clock > 4.25am and Looong before dawn! heard a scratchy faint 'practice' little 'Cockadoodle Doooo'! "WHAT"? Who's got a Rooster nearby!?" Next Morning - same thing - but louder. "What - Who?' Where? 'Say that again...?" >>>"YOU!" A BOY! Flippin 'ek! Donated him to the local School Farm. 3 weeks later the 2nd one also announced his gender. "Cookadoodle...' DON"T! Off to the Farm with your brother. Sigh... They were so pretty.
Bantam Egg's are about 1/2 > 1/3rd the size of standard Chooks, but with 4 -6 laying we always have plenty. They are friendly, follow me everywhere when I'm weeding to 'help' find grubs and worms. + they eat spiders and scorpions. In the pm's come up on the Deck and peck on the glass sliding door - to let me know it's time for their PM feed: NOW! (Bossy things!). Then they put themselves to bed in their Coop & we just go and shut the door. (Although, admittedly, down here in Tassie we don't have Foxes - so... Guess you'd need a fox proof Free Range area for yours. The normal size chooks now look like great thumping Monsters to my eyes! 😄
This is so much fun to see 😀 I haven't been to the show or regatta in nearly 30 years! And from memory ours is less than half the size of that 😁😃 I used to love the G whizzer though 🤗👏👏👏👍.
Love seeing you having a good time at the show. Weather looked great too. 😃
So excited you got the Bertie Beetle bag. That’s my childhood and probs the only one mum could afford 😊😊and I’m going to check out some vodka 🎉🎉 if you get your chooks young enough they can be very tame. They’ll always peck tho but not in defense. We had an australorp that thought is was a dog and sat on my knee when ever I was outside.
Thanks for taking us to the Royal Show Charlie and Rob. (love the halo) 😄
haha i just noticed that in the thumbnail!
Go for Australia vs England cricket match
In the old days show bags were free. they were used to promote their products
I must be younger than you, I remember them being 2/-. Had to be very selective - parents budget conscious.
glad you both enjoyed the show
Thanks for the vodka part just spent $185 on there product hope its as good as you say.
Oh man I am such an influencer! It was really good though!! When people say about vodka being smooth I never understood until I tried this. Make sure you let me know your thoughts!
I noticed that you didn’t get any fairy floss or corn dogs at the show, that’s the first place that I gravitate too every time I go to the royal show!
It's not just the capital cities but many country towns also have Shows.
Excellent
It has been years since I was there but the other half used to take the boys there just about every year
I went to the show this year, but I made the mistake of going at night. Literally nothing was open, no pavilions or any food outside it was basically just the rides open. So guys, if ur gonna go, go during the day.
Amateur mistake ;)
to Charlie & Rob i been to lots of shows i hope you enjoyed it
You had really good weather for it...not too crowded...knew Rob would love the doggy show lol...pity that Rob you were not brave enough to go on the rides with Charlie...anyway maybe next one lol...love the videos as always 🤗
He apologized at the end of the video to Charlie. That was a good move as he rightly felt guilty.
Pity no cat show, that would have been fun to see.
@@shaundgb7367 👍
I always feel guilty as she would really like to. Same as the Harbour Bridge climb but she didnt want to do it on her one/without me
I remember when "Show Bags" where FREE! The Freddo was popular. now it's a bussiness on it's own. The old days where better but I understand many people take advantage FREE and take more than they need for various reasons
Love your blogs..When I was a kid showbags were free as they were “sample bags “ for people to try the products we used to go home with about 20 each and they were loaded with things
I haven’t been for years, but I’m assuming they still have the woodchopping competition - it’s a shame you missed that. Glad to see you had a good time!
Show-bags were originally for free, they were full of the company’s samples.
there are cats at the show 🐈
glad you're both enjoying my city 😁
I think that would have been on a different day
hope you enjoy the Bertie Beetle bag - the best value for the last 30yrs. (Although there used to be only 1 version. Now they've upped them!)
Due to your fear off going on a crazy ride doing it would up your views massively. Do it Do it Do it for us
There is a cat show, but it is usually only on for a few days so you have to time your visit.
C'mon Rob be brave and go on the rides hahahaha
Great stuff - I loved it. As a little kid I’d go to the Ipswich (Australia) Show & have memories of begging my father to go on the rides with me & he did - poor bugger always got sick on rides. Then from 16 I’d go to the Brisbane Show known as The EKKA - short for Exhibition. Used to always be in August not sure now tho. Lived in Mackay (up north) for 10 years and went to the Mackay Show for years - was great - would see loads of people we knew wandering about so socially it was a top event as well.
The fireworks - you didn’t stay for the fireworks??
No we didnt see any fireworks
Can anyone do a comparison of the Sydney Royal Easter Show to the Royal Melbourne Show? I've only ever been to the Sydney Show.
Not sure- google says Melbourne is bigger, but the attendance is much bigger in Sydney (over 800,000 compared to 500,000 in Melbourne). Maybe Melbourne has more stuff 🤷♀️
@@Dr_KAP Yes, I reckon they would be basically very similar. 👍👍
23:12 that was me you said hello to loved meeting you.
Well it was awesome meeting you buddy! Hope you had a good time at the show!
went to the Perth one years ago, payed 10 bucks for a ride that went up and down.. Once.
Just went to theme parks after that
Hilarious! If I ever get to the show up in Perth again ( I'm in the south west ) I won't go on that ride. Or any other. They are just money down the drain.
Not many if any wear a Stetson hat here.. most Aussie farmers/stockmen where an Australian made Akubra hat
Looks like you had a fun day! Good on you guys. 🦘
Emasculated. Rob I’m impressed by your vocabulary!! We have the Royal Easter Show in Sydney and Brisbane has the Ekka. Are showbags just an Aussie thing? I know Americans don’t have them.
Once upon a time they were called sample bags and they were free.
boo
@@sammy_dog 👻
@@Dr_KAP sorry Kappy I know it looks like I'm stalking you but like I said you are all over the net every time I open up a video there you are larger than life
@@sammy_dog yep lol I’m literally lying in a hospital bed with F all to do 🤣 😂
I love the Royal Melbourne Show, i've probably been going every year (except covid lockdowns) since I was about 5 & i'm 46 now.
Back in the 80's there were more animals & less rides, but that now has changed with various animals in only a few pavilions.
It used to be alot bigger with a cable car ride (like a ski mountain lift) & a full size arena which is no longer.
Glad you enjoyed your visit.
Stetson!? They're American. I think you meant Akubra hats. Can get Stetsons here though.
Ok I’m definitely going next year. Couldn’t find anyone to come with me this time around. I’ll go solo though if i have to cause you’ve made it look like good fun.
I've been to the Melbourne show once, saw less than a 3rd, gave up & went home 😄 too much everything. But some of the regional shows were a better fit.
Great channel guys.
I only found it yesterday by mistake and I'm loving the content.
Hot jam doubts at
The Victoria Market.
The best. Cheers. 👍
Hopefully you'll be back in soon.
The best city.
Cheers buddy! I'm glad you're enjoying what we have to offer 🙂
I did forget to mention my AFL team is Collingwood. Swans won by 1 point.
Next time! Collingwood 🙂👍

the sydney royal easter show is very similar to melbourne i been there only once
That was great! Thanks for sharing - Love your reactions, love you and Charlie - I've never been to Victoria, grew up in the Western suburbs of Sydney, we were poor, could never afford the Royal Easter Show (Sydney's show) although a spoiled older brother got to go lol, moved to Brissie, and went several times to their show 'The Ekka' (the Brisbane Exhibition) several times - I don't like the germs/flu haha so haven't been in over 30 years - Thanks again Rob and Charlie - Love yaz
Well I hope my videos have either giving you a reason not to go because you've now seen it or gives you the inspiration to go to Victoria 😃
I go to the Adelaide royal show just to get the Bertie beetle show bag and a Dagwood dog lol
Bertie Beetle YES MAN! That’s the best.
My ex and I considered buying a Besengi years ago but in spite of all the positives associated with the breed, they had one trait that was kind of a deal breaker for us. On the positive side, they are a great looking dog, very loyal, don't shed fur, don't smell. The drawback for us was, they are very territorial, they're not too keen on people who they don't know very well, paying a visit. We eventually took the safe option and bought a labrardor retriever, best dog I've ever owned. We had to make the tough decision on her recently after 15 years, broke all of our hearts.
We have a couple of black labs that we home board and they are amazing! Black ones are the best as they are a lot calmer and slower. Yellow, brown and red can be a little manic. The only problem is... all the hair on the floor! :D
You always go for the “Bertie Beetle” showbag
Hi guys, hope you’re enjoying Australia. It’s unfortunate you can’t take much home, but you could probably fill up a box of stuff and ship it home
Show bags can be hit or miss. Some are rubbish, some are good value.
stupid daylight saving . im too early lol
Mum always used to get the Liquorice showbag (yuck) and I'd get a Bertie Beetle one and various other showbags
Charlie knows what she's doing, taking you to the Show, talking about rides, feeding you Dole Whip - she's preparing you for Disneyland Rob!! 😂 (Like we talked about during your live)
I'm biased but I think the Sydney Easter Show is bigger and better - it's in the area where the Olympics were held.
No, her sister can go to Disneyland with her instead 😂
The Perth Royal show was a couple of weeks ago too and it lasts for a whole week. I haven't gone in years though cause it's soooo expensive! I love seeing the animals (and yes we have a cat pavilion too) and some of the physical stuff like band marches, car stunt driving, police dog/farm dog displays are so interesting to watch! Long day though if you stay for the drone and fireworks shows at night.
Melbourne show is great, took the kids most years, better than Sydneys Easter show
Good video. You didn't go to the wood chop. I have not been for 20 years I guess but the wood chop was a must see. Maybe they do not have it anymore. Used to be a lot better in the 1970s and 80s. More an agricultural show where the country comes to the city. Now more a city show with rides and showbags and stalls selling crap.
We heard about that but couldn't find it!
Where the country meets the city.
