@@gwhizz44 I'm happy that Lou chose our car for everyone to enjoy ! We wanted to try and keep it as original as possible with having the "modern" parts in case something should break on a tour. Oh, my! A station wagon! What a beauty! What is it about station wagons that makes them so special to some of us? Is it because many of us grew up riding in one and it brings back a memory of our youth? I know I appreciate them now because of their practicality and how these contrast to the current SUV craze that are just blobs and boxes that you cannot see through at a stop light. My great grandmothers one request was that the car had to be garage kept. I think that’s what saved it all these years from the salt in NJ during the winters. That and the fact that my moms cousin blew the trans when he had the car and it sat since 1985 really helped too.

Due to the planned obsolescence invented at GM, all manufacturers wanted people to use, throw away, buy other cars. That's why cars built at the time never had any rust proofing untill the year of 2000.
Non garaged vehicles rusted to the point of no return.

That car is a real treasure. It is good to see the cars people actually drove in my youth preserved. The 300 letter cars are cool, same for Max-wedge cars from the early 60's, but these are the cars real people drove to the supermarket back in the day. Thanks for posting this video.

Love this wonderful Forward Look Suburban wagon - iconic Virgil Exner design - and Love the original owning family enjoying cruising in it 67 years from new. Least expensive and the sole 2-door of Dodge’s three wagon lines at $2,826 base price, followed up the scale by the 6- and 9-passenger Sierra wagons and then the 6- and 9-passenger Custom Sierra wagons. Loved the family’s continuing celebration of this beauty!

very impressive knowledge on the Dodge wagons. We love our "White Whale". Its such a fun vehicle to drive and the I loved the whole learning of this new era for me. My forte is the muscle car era so I was completely blind going into this. To say I've learned a lot is an understatement for this era of car. The simplicity of everything and the fact that there really was no safety in things back then. I think the only fuse in the car was for the radio which was an optional item for the wagon. Anything I have added definitely has fuses in it now for safety. I also learned that this was the first year for the torsional suspension for Mopar. I also recall that 57 is when they started switching the wiring insulation over from cloth to the rubber/plastic

I love the fins on the late fifties cars. It's a rare treat to see a car never leave the hands of the original family! I hope they keep passing it down thru the generations! The gas cap was in a really odd spot; it looks like you would have to be careful filling up, because the gas hose would bump into the rear brake lights!

Yes, it is an odd place for the fuel cap but they couldn't put the tank underneath the car like on the sedans due to the spare tire being there or having the third row optional rear seat. Yes, the tail lights are very brittle as well and with the way they stick out can be broken very easily. The upper lens was the brake and turn signals while the lower one was the back up light.

Thank you. We had my friend Tom only take care of the areas that were rotted out to save as much of the original stuff on the car as possible. Areas that had to then be repainted, I distressed that area to make it look like the rest of the cars look and then I clear coated the whole car to preserve the patina. I only did upgrades for comfort like adding the AC and other safety upgrades like the steering and the brakes since my parents use this as a touring car for the clubs they belong to.

I was born and raised on the Texas Gulf Coast, where heat and humidity always combine to make life miserable. I was born in 1955 and my parents already owned the first Pontiac with factory air, the 1954 Star Chief. Have you ever noticed that MOPAR cars from the fifties and into the late sixties seem to have far fewer a/c-equipped cars than their competitors? Other than the Imperial it can be almost impossible to find a regular Plymouth or Dodge, for instance, from the era of your car with a/c. Your car makes the Chevy of that vintage look positively dumpy!

The other stuff like brakes and steering I upgraded for safety and ease of driving. Trying to stop and turn this boat with manual steering and manual drum brakes was not easy for myself in my 40’s. The differences the Plymouth had a speedometer that the needle went up and around and then his 57 Dodge had the same speedometer your wagon has in it, that was one of the first cars I drove without a drivers license of course dad was always with me and I love the look of the 57 eight and nine Custom Royal Lancer my dad‘s friends 59 Custom Royal Lancer had a record player in the floor. I always thought that was rather unique and not your Chrysler product got it I think it was just the De Soto and Dodge.

We had a 59 Dodge station wagon was called Sierra Leone 4 door, almost identical to Granny's. Dad paid 450oo dollars for "Betsy" in the early 70s it could easily cruise at 100 mph with 6 adult and loaded with luggage. The eyebrows rusted out and dad patched it up, then painted it with a brush, black wings and battleship gray, actually looked pretty good. The push button tranny finally died after one to many burn outs. And she was scraped, but the engine was still good. Probably in some kids hot rod today.

It actually has the cast iron torq-flite 3 speed transmission in it. Yes, you are correct, that it has the 325 Polyspherical V-8, aka the Semi-Hemi as some referred to it as. They built just over 7000 of the 2 door version and personally I have seen about two dozen of them still around (in varying conditions). Whats funny is that they called the wagons Suburbans and the 4 doors were called Sierra's, both are known GM names now.
