Took my car to a slightly more expensive small local shop for my damage and made insurance pay! Best decision because the work was top notch and car looks new after a side collision. A lot of people don’t know that you can get other quotes than the big dogs in town that are in bed with the insurance companies.

      it’s a body shop/dealer not a detail shop.
the goal is to get the mess out of the car that the shop created during the repair process, and to clean it up just slightly better than that. customers aren’t paying for a detail. it’s a production shop.

I worked for a detail company that focused on detailing cars for dealerships, and it was a nightmare. Everyone at the dealership acted like they were better than you and they didn't treat you like a normal human being. They wanted everything so quick and would complain if you didn't have something to their standards. I was only a teenager at the time and that shit would get to me. Took a dealer's job because they mis-represented the work they needed. They told me they had a car they needed scratch repairs to be done. I told them it was 100$ per hour. When I got there there entire vehicle was covered in scratches, every panel and the entire panel too! They told me they had a budget of 300$. I told them I could make it better but could not fix the issue for that budget. After agreeing, I did a very quick compound on the entire vehicle, removing as much as I could in a single pass. When I was done after 3 hours, they were unhappy I had not done a full detail! I don't do dealership work, and made an exception that one time because it was supposed to be a simple scratch repair job. Never again!

I worked at a dealership after working at a professional high end detail/ceramic coating/PPF shop and you would be absolutely amazed at the terrible wash techniques and the towels and nuts they use on brand new cars. They’re just scratching the shit out of them and they don’t care because they’ll only wash the car once or twice so the customer won’t notice, but if you use those terrible techniques and towels/mits on a car over the years the paints not gunna last at all.

I worked as a service manager at a dealership and I can tell you that the detailing Department was great but it was the customers that were not. When I started working there they had several detailing packages available to the customers and of course the customer would take the cheapest one but wanted all the work done on the most expensive package. All it did was cause complaints, so I did away with all the cheap packages and we only had the top end package available. That weeded out all the Cheapskates and we were just as busy doing the top-level package because that was the only option . No complaints after that

Tesla essentially sell direct. They also don't have "scheduled service intervals", you just take it in when something is needed. At most you might need a new air filter every few years, if your 12V battery is getting old then replace that. The computer will warn when things are'nt good, such as tires. Of course, they also don't negotiate on pricing, the price is the price. I suspect this is the way things will go in the future for all car sales, once the dinosaurs are gone.

And because I was paid hourly, they would wring me out to do 6-10 cars a day, where I'd end up doing ~$5k+ of work (if I were an independent detailer) or $400+ (as a detailer under a dedicated shop). I see sales people smile at their customers and when they go in the back or to "speak to their sales manager" all they are doing are laughing about how they are about to take off your head. They are all the same. They want every single thing possible for nothing and want it now. If the dealership is doing it they will take their time and you must wait on them. They over charge like no other. If youre getting a deal it's because they are getting the money on something else. Cars never go up in value and it's the biggest scam in the world. Because I would have to start cutting corners in order to go more places and do more cars. I pride myself in doing quality work, and I don't want to sacrifice my work quality for volume, even though it'd mean more money.

My detail shop did 55,000 in sales last month just dealer work.. on track to do about the same numbers this month..
Yes, they become your customer. They’re the best customer. Yes, you might have to end up doing a little bit more volume, but you sure are not waiting for money to come in. Little small shops that can’t handle volume are good to stay where they’re at. But if you want guaranteed money coming in, go for the dealership. 98% of my business is strictly dealership they have to sell the car so they have to let you clean the car. Been doing this for 20 years and the best in the area..
No one coming off the street is going to give you the consistency that a dealership can .. I couldn’t imagine waiting for somebody to decide to get their car cleaned up for me to feed my family😅

I used to work for a dealership in Australia,
Point number 1 is 100% correct,
They expect a glass of champagne whilst only wanting to pay the price of a glass of beer....
    From what I've seen,
If you want paint protection, you would be safer finding your own detailer to apply it post delivery,
Than using the one that the dealership is trying to sell you.
    That way it will:
    A) Be applied properly in the correct environment, and be allowed the correct amount of time to cure before being exposed to the elements.
    B) Will be a better value proposition...
The dealership I worked out would charge customers circa $1000 AUD, but the actual detailer only got $340 AUD
If you are going to spend $1000 AUD, you should at least be getting your money's worth...

I was a detailer at a dealership and I learned in a trial by fire environment and not only was I able to handle it, I thrived. When I left and went to work for an independent shop I couldn’t believe how slow, inefficient, and lazy they were. I can understand if you are working on high end cars like Ferraris or if you are buffing a black car with paint issues but come on. What I learned is, not all independent shops are cut out for the stress of volume work. And remember, just because it’s a dealership doesn’t mean they rush the work. 99 percent of the time I t’s not the detailers at the dealerships, it’s management.

I just started detailing and guess what?!? My first “client” is a dealership! And I’m quickly learning what is being mentioned here. They have an onsite detail guy and he only does one car per day. Now I see why. I only charge them 100 bucks per car but I now realize I’m getting screwed royally 😂 So after this weeks rush of the dealers overflow I’m definitely going to at least double the the prices for what I do. We’ll see how it goes. Btw I do whatever the car requires ranging from extractions to ceramics. This has got to stop! I also have a full time job!

As a guy who was in the car business for almost 10 years and did it all but finance them. This is so true!!! This issue is the salesman. They know they need the car in 12 hours but wait until 1 hour prior to push the detailer. Then they will railroad you to the customer to make it seem as if they (the salesman) was on point and ready and everyone wise failed them.

This is why my last two details went so well. Both clients told me their vehicle didn’t look that good when they got it brand new. One of the clients also told me they had a dealership detail her vehicle about a year ago and they didn’t do even half as good as we did. I will do one vehicle a day if that’s what it takes to ensure the quality reflected in my work is immaculate.

Dealerships and car lots don't get stereotyped for the past 30 years because it's not true. People get bamboozled by free water and a snack at the food center. They put these new things in dealerships to keep you there longer while they try to figure out how to screw you. in the mean time youre feeling great by a sandwich that is expired and a cola. Detailing is difficult and expensive as it should be. To replace a sensor that's 20 bucks and it cost you 300 to have some goof install it in 10 mins. We had a vehicle that had rail dust (orange spots in the paint) they wanted to charge the customer 30 hours to fix it! It was a brand new denali. It should have been done before they sold it! I said I could do it all in 5 hours and the dealership said no and told the customer it would be 30 labor to wet sand and buff the ENTIRE vehicle. Unbelievable! who does that!? Anyone that details knows that is completely unnecessary and potentially could ruin the vehicles paint job if they go through. This dealer is owned by a billionaire that is clueless along with a clueless staff that is just trying to show daddy look at all the money I made you like a legal pimp. Disgusting

Dealers do look for priority in specific situations- but that doesn't mean you allow yourself to be a doormat.
Do the good work and have integrity, but also use good sense in priorities when dealing with the client that sends hundreds of cars per month.

Here’s the hack, expand slightly hiring slightly more staff and dedicate one bay per day to dealership work. This will help you grow and adjust capacity to meet demand….heres the catch…only give this one bay guarantee to one dealership in your area and they only keep it if they keep it filled 80% of the time or more. Now you have them competing for your demand vs the other way around. 🍻

Smart businessman. With a lot of that big-contract work, the business model slowly traps you into being reliant on the dealership's/big box store's high volume of business. Then, when they've displaced your other customers, they can make more demands for lower and lower cost under threat of finding a new company to contract with. Which would leave you high and dry, since they displaced all your other customers.
It's a trap. No bulk discounts on labor.

The benefit is that zero margin business can cover a lot of overhead and keep cash flow coming which can open a lot of other opportunities for you. You can advertise, we are the official detailer of X dealership...
But if you arent capitalizing then you are working for free.

So we can do some when we have free time, to help you upsell some cars.
