MOL Triumph Container Ship Leaving Southampton for the First Time, Phantom 4 Pro 4K Drone

- For a short period in 2017 this was the largest container ship ever built however this has now been superseded it is currently the largest ship to ever have docked in Southampton or the UK at over 20000 container and at 400m long.
Captured as she was leaving Southampton for the first time on the 13/05/17

Thanks. Does take a bit of planning. You obviously have one shot, if you mess it up it’s gone and usually won’t be back in the UK let alone Southampton for quite a while.

Great job. I'm also going to film the ships at the Free Port of Riga. I bought a DJI Mavic 2 ZOOM yesterday. I'm a complete beginner in filming with a drone, but I know I'll learn. I work as a Vessel Traffic Operator, and I have a great opportunity regarding ships movement to schedule filming. I have a question. Whether it is necessary to inform the ships master about drone filming? Maybe any more restrictions at Southampton Port? Thank you.
Thanks. Looks like a great drone, was tempted by the zoom capabilities but shoot quite a bit in low light so the larger sensor of the pro swung my decision.
Over here the only legal restrictions is maintaining a 50m distance from any vehicle or person. So providing this distance is kept I don’t have to let anyone know I’m filming. Some of my videos have been shared by the ship operators as well so at least some of them are perfectly happy with it. Providing you don’t get too close I’m sure they will be fine.
My advise would be to get a bit of practice controlling the drone over land shooting stationary objects before you go out and shoot a ship, the moving target makes it a little harder to follow and you don’t want to crash into one especially over the water! Good luck!

The soundtrack on this video does not fit in with the footage of the ship sailing down Southampton Water, I had to turn sound off to watch, otherwise a good piece of filming.
