    These are excellent photographic fundamentals for all genres Justin. Not just street. As an environmental portrait photog and storyteller, I'd say everyone needs to hear your thoughts. Thanks for sharing. Couldn't agree more on small prime lenses. I LOVE my Sigma 35mm f/2.8 DG DN on the Leica SL. I'm sure the Leica SL lenses are technically superior, but at over $5K each...

    Great video! Awesome advice. Been shooting photos for 20 years but never took it on a serious level, But always felt like my photos were mediocre but now I understand it’s because I never took it seriously. Starting a photography project sounds like a really fun idea.

    I have one zoom lens, which also is my only autofocus lens, a 24-70mm f4, which I mostly use for portraits and as a flexible workhorse lens when I'm not sure of the conditions I'll be shooting in. Otherwise I only use Voigtlander manual focus prime lenses. I prefer how they make me work, and I love their way of rendering images.

    • @AskMOTT
      @AskMOTT  Рік тому +1

      I always found that 24-70mm made me lazy as a shooter , but yes it’s very versatile. I found it very helpful for filming actually .

    • @shmuelaryehkoltov241
      @shmuelaryehkoltov241 Рік тому

      @@AskMOTT it can make anyone a lazy photographer if he/she doesn't know how to or why they are using this specific lens and at the specific focal lens they're using. For example, whenever I'm doing a portrait I know what I want to create, I've already imagined it visually. The focal length I'm choosing is dependent on that visualization. The same when I shoot architecture, I know what affect the 24mm end will give me compared to the 70mm and what I want to achieve with it. I never use it avoid getting close to the subject or something like that :)
      That said, with my lens collection soon to be finished, with a 15mm, 21mm, 28mm, 50mm and a 105mm prime lens (three of them Voigtlander lenses, two Nikkor vintage lenses, all of them nice and compact) I'll soon won't need the 24-70mm lens that much anymore. I'm typically using only the 21mm and 50mm, unless I need to get a ultra-wide shot or some details I can't get close to, where I'd use the 15mm and 105mm. And the 28mm is mostly for documentary stuff. The only use I'll have for the 24-70mm is for my portrait stuff and situations where the weather demands it.

    Good tips! I had been thinking about buying a zoom lens and now after your video I think I will wait and work more with the lens I have and then consider a prime! Thanks Justin....nice haircut 🙂

      Thanks Sue, you’ll love going full primes:).

    • @LuziBeerbaum

      Seriously, street photography is not about picture quality. It's about the stories you tell. Very often you find yourself in a position where you can't get any closer. This moments will come and you will bitterly regret not having higher focus lengths. Sometimes you also just need more compression to make the picture work.
      ... and believe me.... there's nothing more satisfying then taking a picture of a praying nun with pigeons fucking right behind her back.
      The big benefit of a primelens is just the huge aperture width wich is only beneficial for low light or really fast action.
      Everyone should have a nifty fifty but more is pointless in street photography cause when you changed the lens the right moment has already passed and will never come back again..
      Sure, sometimes the picture may look technically imperfect first, but it can be fixed in Darktable, Lightroom, Snapseed, PS or whatever else you got in your toolbox.

    When first starting out with digital, my camera had a kit zoom on it and of course used it. As it turned out, at least 90% of my photos were within a very tight focal length range around 35mm. As such, I usually just run with that prime and call it good. On occasion I’ll toss the zoom back on to do a self check of focal length to see if I’ve migrated to 28 or 50, but so far, no.
    Trivia: One advantage the Pacific Northwest has for monochrome photographers is the relentless overcast giving us one huge softbox. Maybe that’s why the predominant paint color is gray. Ha!
    Thanks again Justin for your time and thoughts.
