    The show drove probably a few million people who never ever would have read A Song of Ice and Fire to do so. I know I myself am one of them. I had zero interest in fantasy until I was convinced to watch GOT. The show didn’t end well but it was the best thing that ever happened to George R. R. Martin

      Tbf season one did get me into the books. It's possible I wouldn't have run across them if HBO hadn't picked it up. The season one crew really brought the story to life.

      I had not read a fantasy series since I was young and read LOTR. Until GOT. After watching 3 season of Thrones I read the books. Then I read his novellas. Then I read his history of books. And the book series is so much deeper and overall just better. And yeah I definitely wouldn’t have found my love for ASOIAF without the HBO series. Which I also love…except for seasons 6 and 7 lol.

    Season 5 had "thronesy" moments as Carmine says, but the nonsensical story writing and just spinning on wheels kill any enjoyment that could be taken from those scenes.
    Season 5 is the beginning of the end, and an awful season. It's full of pointless chewing the scenery where the plot doesn't move at all and then some shock moments forcefully move the story along.
    Cersei's walk of shame didn't change her character, she already hated everybody and didn't learn anything from giving power to the Faith.
    Jon's death changed nothing, he remained the same dummy after getting killed and resurrected.
    Stannis died because they made the greatest general in Westeros forget about basic tactics.
    Littlefinger has no plan, he just does random shit and stares at people menacingly. He should have at least been involved in the Olyvar plot against Loras to get into Cersei's good graces.
    I forget what happens in Essos, because it's so boring and nonsensical. Oh, right, the people turn to the Sons of the Harpy and start to hate Dany because she killed someone who killed a member of the Harpies. Great logic there.

    • @Ims51
      @Ims51 Рік тому +8

      You are 100% right about all of the above. To me , littlefinger having no plan is the worst thing they did. Probably because of how obvious they made it seem very early on that petyr and varys both have nothing but carefully thought out game PLANS.

      @@Ims51 Exactly. I kind of hate Littlefinger, because he's obviously self-serving, and no-one would tolerate a guy like him. However, in the first seasons he was interesting and clearly had a plan.

    I've had a hard time rewatching. For me the quality of the first few seasons still holds up, but the quality of the last few seasons really takes the wind out of the sails of some previously exciting arcs. It's hard to get excited about Arya or Dany crossing the narrow sea when I know it doesn't lead to anything interesting, for example. Bran's story was never my favourite, but now that I know that all of his scenes after season 2 are just a slow march towards disappointment, he's borderline unwatchable. There are still many enjoyable aspects of the show, but I find it hard to care about anything once the characters are on the way to their respective "late game" arcs.

    • @crazygemini82
      @crazygemini82 9 місяців тому +5

      I'm currently re-watching the series and just finished S7 E4 and I can't tell you how many times I've burst out laughing hysterically in the last few episodes simply bc of the things Dany says. For example when Olenna, Yara and Ellaria want her to attack Kings Landing right away but she preceded to tell them she won't kill innocent people in Kings Landing. There are many other instances in those first few episodes of S7 with Dany that were so cringe when knowing in just a few more episodes she torched the city out of nowhere. I honestly feel like I'm torturing myself watching it all over again or maybe I'm in some weird delusion that the Old God's are going to intervene somewhere and rewrite the ending and make it 4 more seasons long.

    It speaks to how unrealistically low Game of Thrones is perceived today, that a random dude feels comfortable going on youtube saying season 1 was great and the rest was OK or shit. This statement can only age embarrassingly. Because sooner or later the genjutsu of recency bias will wear off and the world will go “what?? Did this dude say?”.I can’t even begin to explain how many levels of wrong this is.

      As much as s5-End sucked, the Jaime regression hate I actually don't really agree with. It was a horrible line, him saying he "never" cared about the innocent, but otherwise, yeah he just went back to his true love, it overtook his positive growth, it was a little gray, he cared about doing the right thing and he still wanted his girl. They should have tossed that Innocents line, but he basically showed that compared to being with Cersei when it counted, the Innocents didn't matter as much in the end

    • @faegotte

The reason we hate that line is that he literally ruined his entire reputation and destroyed his image in the minds-eye of possibly hundreds or thousands of people in order to save half a million random civilians from being burned alive by the mad king. He demonstrated for multiple seasons that he cared about human life over his sister, then did a complete 180 for no discernable reason and went back to Cersei.

Like the guy pays “good money” and gets this beautiful woman on the surface he thinks he’s getting something really good but we the viewers see the grossness underneath. And on another level it shows the vileness and depravity of the lords of Westeros. That even the minor characters off screen are just as bad as the main characters we actually follow. It sets a tone.

      She was a prostitute. The guy was paying for a prostitute. Littlefinger sold him exactly what he paid for.
      And no prostitute would ever walk up to a John and just start making out with him. The girl knows better than to do that and the guy would never let her do that. You pay to have sex with them, not have a make out session like you're back in high school. It was just gross shock value/HBO nudity and sex quota that D and D loved to give them because they were hacks even from the start. They just got lucky that the story and characters were so good that it was very hard to ruin if they use the source material. And the minute they stopped the show became a generic cringe fest like every other film and TV show that these clowns have ever had their hands on.,

    The point the article was trying to make regarding the prequels having a negative effect on the main show was that they dropped the ball with the White Walker storyline because they thought they were going to expand on them in the Blood Moon series. And it’s completely correct. House of the Dragon was not their priority, they wanted to capitalize on Stark popularity thought that prequel would be the next massive show for HBO. But the way they ended the series came back to bite them and the prequel got canned which made their lack of tying up the WW story even worse.

    George RR Martin at least has a legacy of starting a new thread of fantasy writers. At the time he released it was kinda JR Tolkien or probably Robert Jordan. Like JV Jones.
    Also at least it hasn’t been as long as Melanie Rawn. I’m still waiting 20+ years on for the finale to her Exlies series.
    I hate the wheel of time series. The Morraine casting was inspired and makes me wish it was better. However the Perrin storyline pissed me off entirely and I refuse to watch further than episode 4.

    Okay, I feel compelled to respond. When they stalk about the Wheel of Time show and say no one absolutely hates it, that's not true. I hate it. I mean I HATE IT! It is an absolute piece of steaming toxified garbage! I LOVE the Wheel! It is in my top three fantasies of all time. But the show absolutely destroyed it. They absolutely massacred book 1 in what they cut., the cuts they made were completely unnecessary. They changed the lore. And the world feels AWEFUL! It feels like a set in a cheap one man play being shown above a meth lab. The whole setting feels fake and completely depopulated! So no. I also know people who hate the show as well. So no, they are wrong.

    • @AN-jz3kf
      @AN-jz3kf 7 місяців тому

      There's three main plots going on: the war for the throne, Daenerys/stuff across the sea, and the Wall (literally just Jon). So the Mother of Dragons and the bastard on the wall naturally get more attention than the first larger major plot simply because he's THE character for all the walker stuff in the books so far (and in the show until the plots converge in the last seasons). The war for the throne has literally all the other POV characters minus Arya committed to it. Technically Dany is indeed part of the war for the throne, but in the books she's stuck across the sea having her own completely unrelated stuff happening.

    I loved Season 1 but Season 2-5 made me want to punch out mirrors. Though in Season 5, I loved seeing Doran Martell get killed, it was wonderful. I enjoyed seeing his face as his legacy was ruined. I loved seeing the Martells get cut down one by one.
    This show was overhyped, disappointment was inevitable. The show should have been cancelled after Season 1, everyone would have been happy.
    Season 2-5 was Drive to Survive not Game of Thrones. S6-7 was a nice revival of the show’s form and a return to the podium was nice then S8 came and ruined everything again. But the fact that the show was so awful from S2-5.

You avoid those scene and it will be just a sadistic charactere who mutilate another one. And for that im greatful to HBO about Theon. But it's true taugh.
