A huge thank-you Abe. You were spot on, you nailed it for me Abe. 👍
After 9months of scratching my head and trying to work out what was going on with my corals (six-year-old mixed reef), despite my ICPs always coming back within range. After so much researching and trying everything I could think of, I happened to stumble across your video and everything you were saying made sense, so I decided to go down the carbon dosing path.
Now, 4months later, and my tank problem has been solved!!! 🙏
It's no longer a mystery to me - carbon was the missing link in my tank. Your theory regarding carbon becoming deficient and the most basic forms of life being unable to grow is exactly what was happening in my tank. In hindsight, it makes so much sense.

Your results are very interesting to me, given the fact I have a now 5 year old tank where I was noticing similar coral heath changes. I have been dosing vinegar for 3 years and decided to pull that doser to replace it with Kalkwasser. SPS coral color and growth have come back strong, since making the change. That said, I have also returned to dosing MB7 in conjunction with weekly coral snow. Regardless, our systems keep us on our toes, which is half the fun / frustration of this hobby. Great video.

I’m still working on getting it dialed in. Thanks for the videos

As usual, great intelligent content. I do carbon dosing with the Red Sea product and I learned the hard way to back off on dosing levels, so I wasn't zeroing out, but just holding NO & PO at good levels and now I no longer have bacterial or algae outbreaks and everything is very happy. It is definately good to hear your experience and how you approach these issues and then share great info, which helps all of us. THANK YOU!!

    Fantastic looking corals Abe!
I remember follwing SunnyX on RC back in carbon dosing peak. My tank ran woderfully on that system. Over time I went away from it and recently got back to carbon dosing 6-8 months ago. I can share the same experience that growth has exploded the last couple months. My tank is still new but I believe that my carbon was limited or the corals really like their bacteria

Makes sense! I dosed carbon with Brightwell Reef BioFuel several months to a year ago to reduce nutrients and stopped after nitrates zeroed out. Tank did look healthier though during that process with better polyp extension, color (at first), etc. Will begin using again since I do now dose Brightwell NeoNitro nitrate source as needed (5-10 ppm). My tank is approaching 2.5 years in age so maturity is theoretically there. Thanks for the analysis! 😃

I carbon-dosed back in the early 2ks it worked well for me but I found it was something I added when I needed it, and I stopped once things got where I wanted. I've done Zeo, Bipoellets, and Vodka. My current system is about 3 years old now, I was dosing ZeoBak, Flatworm stop w/coral booster. It worked well enough but weened off it due to the cost. My corals are not as vibrant as they were, nor is PE as nice but everything looks "good" and tbh is growing to a point where it's becoming problematic; and I don't have a large enough community to distribute frags to locally. I'll most likely go back to Vodka it's cheap and easy to setup on a doser, but I also found my tank responded really well to AB+ (I've never been a fan of Red Sea products, but someone gave it to me) so I may go that route as it's much cheaper then Zeo. - For Ref: I had a reefkeeping totm back in the day.

This makes so much sense. I am just getting into Acropora. I don’t have the best lights in the world but I could grow montis just fine. I picked up a could frags / colonies, even got a frag of Walt Disney from my brothers tank.
None of the Acro in my tank has shown any lose or change in color and grown was great from day one.
My tank is 3 years old and I carbon dose for a year now

My Frogspawn for month or two was retracting and never "perk up" then last week and half I started dosing vodka . Within a week polyps extension came back. So, I'm true believer of Carbon dosing. Btw Awesome Tank you have!!

  • @Cgraseck

Great vid! The problem that I have had with dosing carbon in my 19 year old reef is overgrowth of Aufwachs in my pipes. This resulted in lots of this biofilm being ejected into the tank whenever the sump pump was cycled off and then on. I did not find any benefit to the addition of carbon, so I stopped adding it. I guess everyone has different experiences. Please post more often. Your videos are very thought provoking.
    Cheers,

Tropic Marin has 3 carbon dosing products that you may want to look into. Elimi NP, Bacto Balance, plus np. You switch between the 3 based on your nutrients. Supplies a carbon source without bottoming out or raising nutrients. Im having fantastic results with it.

Hi, Abe. Maybe you have it, or maybe it’s too late given that you’ve already introduced a carbon source, but the data provided by a Triton N-DOC test would be an interesting share. Hands down, the best coral color and growth I have experienced was with a six-year-old system dosed with a carbon source. I can’t say that what I experienced was due to carbon depletion or from what could have been a very happy bacteria population, but dosing carbon seemed to have made a difference. Regardless, I don’t think the why matters too much. The corals were very happy and that made me happy. Thanks for sharing!

Nice - I used to carbon dose but now I am super lazy. My tank was a few years old and I am not sure it did much, although I started making a DIY coral snow and adding the carbon (TM Bacto Balance) to that along with a little aminos - I think that was the best way to do it as I didn't notice any negatives with the aminos and I saw positives
I do think a NO3 to PO4 ratio of 100:1 up to 200:1 is generally agreed upon and Mike Paletta found that was common in the best reef tanks he looked into parameters on.
Still for most tanks less is more an I spent years doing too much (and went way too far the other way I fear)

Love the results of Zeovit with nutrient dosing. Completely, agree, the misconception that Zeovit and ULN come as a pair is false. And you won't necessarily get the pale coloration as long as you keep your nutrients up. Great video!
I've used Zeovit with nutrient dosing plus heavy feeding and never had ULN but amazing growth, results, and coloration. But then I got AEFW and shutdown my tank 1.5 years ago. If I was to restart today, this is absolutely the method I would go again. Can get expensive for large tanks though.
