This was a great talk with an important message! We need to bring more attention to environmental issues and talk about people's role in dealing with them. Cooperation is key!!! And that is cooperation at every level including the household level! People tend to think it is only authorities and governmental bodies who need to take action, while it's about time we became more conscious about our water footprint in our everyday life and think about how we can reduce that. We have to start acting responsibly for our and future generations' sake!
My take away--- Water is an infrastructure / commons resource and should be owned and managed collectively not owned and managed individually. Collective long term benefit rather than individual short term benefit. Politically difficult to accomplish. Works for some things: riparian rights, communications, energy distribution, transportation routes (land, ocean, air), ocean fishing.
Insightful speech! When people think about wars, they usually think about wars based on political reasons. This speech is interesting because it explains the potential of water in creating conflicts and wars. Continue to increase awareness about this important topic so we can hopefully avoid the consequences.
Many wars are done in part for political reason, but mostly the real reason is "business"... Access to resources, new markets, strategically important areas, etc. Further, certain companies already know the future value of water and purchased rights...
Interesting as an introduction to a facet of the global water problem, but quite shallow in terms of science. I mean I would have liked to see the results of his models and what kind of insights they provide, how his research evolved after his experience in Africa, or maybe give more examples of conflicts that have been related to water issues (Lesotho/South Africa, Bolivia). It sometimes sounds like he is lecturing the audience...
I get three (3) takeaways from your speech: - Water resources are stressed and the situation is worsening - Water War could become a reality - COOPERATION IS THE BEST SOLUTION TO ADAPT TO THE WATER CRISIS
Its not only about water, but also about the environment in general. Ignoring one of the environmental elements, would affect other elements. Ignoring air, water, soil, etc. pollution would make us to compensate one for another. Never forget, environmental elements are interrelated.
The speech like that let us more think about of our planet. I think stiil there is so many hope for changing this matters. Evey one need to be reseponsible for our planet. People need to think more smart about their lifestyle and local comunity in every erea of this world need to promote their community for better and smart consumption.
The Ruanda example is the perfect expression of Ubuntu, the African way. But Ubuntu is a double edged sword because the very gentleness of the African soul allows space for the rise of the most brutal dictators.
I was looking for such comment. Its basically 17 minutes speech with substance which you can take from basic sources in 2 minutes of reading. There is also no solution, no idea. Just populism like the guy wanted to win election votes from these people.
I live in Australia and I don't need to mention that this country is well known as being very dray. And obvious we need a lot of water. And guess what?.How much we store or collect water from rivers, from heavy rains??.Yes, you guess.Almost nothing!!! When is rain we flooding so many times in the past with huge damage in millions or even in billions and it's go like that for millennia. And this scenario is common almost to every country in the wourld. China is now showing how to deal with water. And America? It's loughing stock. How many dams did they build?? California has no water...bring it on!!
Thank you Kaveh your talk it is right, water scarcity is a real thing today and will get worse unless humans change right away the way we use it. More than 70% of the available fresh water is consumed by agriculture and food production must be increased many times to supply the growing population. So, if agriculture requires more fresh water there will be less water available to cities. The solution is that agriculture must be discarded as a human activity. Agriculture has been, and it is the single most devastating activity to earth's ecology. I propose hydroculture as an alternative. Hydroculture is the production of food without using soil and one of its most known activities is Hydroponics, Aeroponics, Aquaponics, etc. Let me explain some benefits. One acre of hydroponics vegetables produces the same amount of food as 10 acres in agriculture. Growth cycle is faster for instance it takes for agriculture 90 days to harvest lettuce with hydroponics production takes less than 60 days. Since there is no need for using soil hydroculture can be performed anywhere that is within cities, in desserts, arid lands, etc. No use of pesticides since production is controlled at least no herbicides. THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IS THAT USES 90 to 95% LESS WATER THAN AGRICULTURE. So the impact is that cities will have more supply of fresh water with less pesticides. My name is Enrique Lulli, I live in Lima - Peru and I hope to receive some feedback. Many thanks.
Enrique you have beutiful name and buitifull idea. But all of your ideas no matter how good we shell not to be affraid of water shortages beqouse rivers, rains is bringing l lot of water, all we need is to store it ,build dams and pump it where's is to where's is not. Plus desolinasation is not bad idea all we need Entergy. Nuclear energy !!!.And solt brine should be stored to for future exploitation.
WATER. Thanks..Water..! ! ! It's the most essential and pervasive element of life. Yet, nearly half of humanity will face water scarcity by 2030 due to climate change and population growth. What can be done about the looming crisis of a global drought? Could water scarcity spark war as world leaders have already predicted?...Thanks
Dear Pedro Water is plantfull but we need to store it build big reservoirs and dams. Water is 72 percent of the plant so we should never be short of it!! I do not know where's you live but I m sure where's you are almost all water is going down the gurgle , sorry to ocean's
I was with him up until around the 15 min mark saying to fight and the kill to be kill essentially was the "western option". I think that African community is quite unique. While killing people over resources has benefited western nations a great deal in the past or maybe even now. Western Countries hardly came up with the idea or are the only was still doing it.
well, he mentioned low level conflicts happen here and then, but this is a great example for all of us to learn from people that we considered "less civilised". A less aggressive solution.
A simplest way to save water in the world with no cost as follows: Step 1: At a washbasin - Just turn water tap maximum and measure total volume of water in a minute. That’s around 9 liters or more. Step 2: There is a knob below every wash basin. Step 3: Turn it little to reduce water flow. Step 4: Water tap maximum volume of water in a minute should be equal to 6 liters or near it. So, you save water 33% or more at the wash basin with no cost, time, or much effort. This makes it to be the Simplest way to Save Water in the World and it comes with no cost.
That is a nice idea, but it is not that simple. 70% is used in agriculture and about 20% in industry. So this will save like only 33% of 10% of water. But still, we should do that and save every drop.
Cold Steam the efficient way to use the sun geothermal composting rocket stoves any heat source to produce electricity and or distilled water explained from basic concept to employment. Water boils in a vacuum at 75 F or 24 C Two open containers one full of water the other empty connect them at the bottom and water will reach an equilibrium 50 50. If one is sealed except for the connection the other will remain empty because of the vacuum created in the sealed container. Gravity will overcome this vacuum if the containers are taller than 34 feet. If the tanks are 40 feet tall the tanks will reach an equilibrium of water levels at 34 feet leaving six feet of hard vacuum in the sealed tank. This makes a vacuum pump set we need two of them if we were going to distill water as the cold side open tank is used to collect the distilled water from it as the continuous input of water needs to go somewhere. Each sealed tank has four valves three at the top two of those on opposite sides (B&C) one at the very top (D) one at the bottom on the side (A), water-based vacuum pump operations are, Close bottom tank valve A and top tank valve C. Open top tank valve D. Fill sealed tank through top side valve B. Close valve B and D when full. Open bottom valve A. This primes the system to let the warm water in that will vaporize and run through the system when you partially reopen valve B (to control flow rate) and open valve C to its fullest. For only power generation need one pump set and one vacuum tank so we can have a Hot side and a Cold side one to boil the water and one to have the low pressure/vacuum to draw the steam in through the turbine then the cooling coils then to the tank. At the bottom of the cold side, tank is a return pipe with the one way valve to the heat source the one-way valve prevents expansion back to the cold side and as the hot side vacuum chamber is the only outlet for the expanding water and it is drawn by the vacuum the cycle proceeds. You can combine the two and get power generation and distilled water keeping the return line from the power generation system will let you switch if you don't need distilled water on a continuous basis in large quantities. I am going to make one feel free to make one as well it is open source.
Maybe use elektrolisys to run a hydrogen engine like in space, where the oxygen from water supplies the ship, then use the power from the engine to power the ekektrolisys and desalination
The Eco Life Atmosphere Water Generator, creates water out of thin air through condensation. The megahome distiller can easily make pure water in your kitchen.
I was hoping for some game theoretical insight into why and when people cooperate over water. What factors promote cooperation over conflict? Sometimes these TED talks are all framing and no substantive insight.
If we had spent the money to find water on earth rather on Mars we would not have been anticipating a dry plant in near future, rather i suppose we could have created a ocean of freshwater.
TEDx WaterStreet team announces the appointment of a Russian PR agency owner, Dina Mostovaya (who has already blocked me), to the advisory board in the midst of the full-scale war of Russia against Ukraine. When users asked for an explanation, they got immediately blocked. Dina Mostovaya works as a pr advisor for russian funded techno-park Technopark Skolkovo LLC Over 200 international companies have responded to the Russian invasion of Ukraine with sanctions. The reason for that is a military invasion of Russia in Ukraine on February 24th. When users started the conversation and asked for explanations on social media about the appointment, the response of TEDxWaterStreet was … blocking them, without any response. Navana Redwing its more complicated than that. Saudi Arabia does take water from the ocean however it has to desalinate it which requires removing the salt. This is a very very expensive process. Therefore poorer nations cannot afford to do this.
What on earth is he talking about...water is a cycle, ever replenished, over and over. The oceans are 2/3rds of the earths surface. Desalination of ocean water is the solution to drinking water, and sanitary water solutions. On the other hand I am astonished that we use potable drinking water in the west to spay on our grass. 70% of treated water in some areas of the US is used to water our grass and landscape plants. Stop that first, and don’t panic, when drought occurs, wait, the rain will come again, it’s a cycle.
His morale at the end is so naive as the rest of the talk is redundant or silly. Laws and justice are the solution for conflicts that arise from competition.
What I mean to say is that if water redistributes into the sea it's no longer consumable unless we desalinate it which isn't economically sufficient with today's technology.
If we don't use the water flowing through rivers it may end up at a sea, but if we use it it will reach ground water table, so water cant be wasted unless we pollute it.
oxygen is the most immediate human necessity -water the second our new engine emits these two nutrients instead of toxics solutions are coming you are just concentrating on the problem too much desalination will fix it
desalination will absolutely not fix it solely, the current technology in desalination is not good for the environment. Besides by just supplying more water, we don't solve the water scarcity on the long run and we will face other problems such as more pollution and damaging nature. It is important that we add more value to water and use it more responsible.
Climate warming will result in more evaporation from the oceans and thence more rainfall over land. More rainfall means more fresh water. Contribute to climate change for a better future.

Hats Off .... wonderful speech. thoughtful. Yes we have have to be socially responsible, i will also try and take this message to whom ever i can.
Western societies should learn conflict resolution from "less civilized" communities where humanity still exists!
