This is the black American culture that we love Old black lady who speaks smoothly and is highly educated. It’s so soothing to listen to her words of wisdom.
Most black americans embrace street culture instead of going in school. Like the woman said, we should all turn down the heat and turn on the light. Then, maybe we might see the truth? This statue, as so do many, many others, offers many teaching moments, beginning with the fact that black people paid to have it sculpted with their own hard earned money. The rendition represents a victorious moment in America's history, which should be celebrated and is no doubt is why the statue was erected in the first place. Indeed, we should all learn from it. Instead of tearing down monuments across the country, maybe people should study the history behind them, instead?

African-Americans had no power over what they wanted the statue to look like. The plaque needs to be more informative because 97% of people see statues. We don't debate about Lincoln's position but more about it, so it is clear who has the dominant position. The African-American man was actually Archer Alexander- the plaque doesn't mention him at all. Ask yourself - why not? Also, the sculptor of the statue did not even want this to be the final design. The contributions of African-American's for this statue are the only reason why it shouldn't be torn down, but to amend those African-Americans who saved their hard-earned money, the plaque should change so the lack of an accurate representation should change. Many at the time were happy just because there was a statue of a black man up, many had not seen that in the 1800s. Many people also believed Lincoln was always in support of African-Americans, which is not 100% true. The plaque should give archer's history, it should be clear that the position of Lincoln gives a false narrative/perception, that African-Americans had no power of selecting the sculptor or designs, that Fredrick Douglass - the Black hero at the time did not agree with this statue as well. I know Ms. Marcia Cole and yes, we've had discussions about this. The African-American Civil War memorial is not debatable, this statue is because it doesn't show the clear triumph of African-Americans but instead the false narrative that Lincoln magically with the wave of his hands freed enslaved African-Americans. This statue does not give a good representation because it fails to mention its flaws, admitting your wrongs go a long way. That how people learn and hopefully do better.

Teaching moments only happen because these monuments are out where they can be seen by those who wouldn't go to a museum to see them. They start the conversations that need to happen. They raise awareness, which is exactly what we need right now. Those hating on this statue are exactly the ones who need to be learning from it.

That woman needs a voice in government. She hit it right on the head: “it depends on how you look at it”. Differing viewpoints are a GOOD thing.

The financial contributions of African-American's for this statue are the only reason why it shouldn't be torn down, but to amend those African-Americans who saved their hard-earned money, the plaque should change so the lack of an accurate representation should change.
“why not put in a museum”
Karen!! when’s the last time you visited a museum!!! we don’t hide our great moments or great heroes, or our faults, we use all of it ti learn & grow, move forward. thats why they are out in the public square, karen!!
Karen has no clue she just a white woman trying to be some type of relevant!
Trying to educate those who never paid attention in history class- or want it all erased- is a tall calling. I salute you, sister, as a fellow, Civil War-era reenactor! THANK YOU for doing your best with those who do not want any of America's history to be remembered, now or EVER. Our history- good, bad, and very ugly MUST be kept alive so it can be learned from!
"Why not put it in museum?"
So it can be free for everyone to enjoy and learn that's why you don't put it in a museum... Simple, that woman needs to check her privilege
put it in a black museum at that.
This lady should give the tours and teach our youth. Her voice is that of an angel you, so pleasant to listen to.
The nicest and wisest old black lady tells the people why the statues are important to everyone.
Entitled White Girl: Why tho?
“he’s ready to sprint.” that gave me chills
I didn’t know museums could be african american. I thought they were just buildings.
ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS LADY.....COULD LISTEN TO HER FOR HOURS. DAILY❤🇺🇸❤
I love this woman. She’s intelligent, has such a calm demeanor and makes so much sense. We need to surround ourselves with people like her. A true American and friend.
Mrs. Cole, you seem to be a fine example of a human being. Hats off to you!
I love this lady! She is so wise and such a Great example to follow! GOD bless her and our beloved country!
Thank you beautiful ladies for telling history instead of trying to erase it. The sweet calmness of her voice is angelic.
Such an articulate educated woman unbelievable she speaks the truth!
We need more people like her in this country. People who care about historical facts and understand this nation is not perfect.
We all need to listed to our elders and learn from their experiences. I really appreciated what she had to say.
Well spoken and thought of by an educated, experienced, loving hearted woman setting an example of love and patience for all to learn from. What a beautiful woman.
Such an eloquent and dignified lady teaching us about how to positively look at life. Thank you.
African-Americans had no power over what they wanted the statue to look like. The plaque needs to be more informative because 97% of people see statues. We don't debate about Lincoln's position but more about it, so it is clear who has the dominant position. The African-American man was actually Archer Alexander- An African American who was enslaved but informed Union soldiers about Confederate plans. He had to escape being captured by slave catchers and was later assisted by William Greenleaf Eliot, a White minister, who eventually wrote Alexander's biography. The plaque doesn't mention him at all. It doesn't mention either. Ask yourself - why not? The plaque is called Emancipation, with the subject being a man who escaped his captors and assisted the Union army. His actions that nothing to do with Lincoln. Also, the sculptor of the statue did not even want this to be the final design. The financial contributions of African-American's for this statue are the only reason why it shouldn't be torn down, but to amend those African-Americans who saved their hard-earned money, the plaque should change so the lack of an accurate representation should change. Many at the time were happy just because there was a statue of a black man up, many had not seen that in the 1800s. Great to hear real people talk and educate. What a wonderful lady!
"'This statue is a teaching moment"
This was lovely. Her demeanor, her teaching her calmness. She was approachable and answered well. The memorial is a painful reminder of slavery, but please, let us not forget that it happened!
Love the wisdom. Only if young people had this, it's truly a gift! Great video.
Wonderful lady for educating those that want to know the truth.
