Great job on the video Peter. Certainly an awesome budget combo for bird photos. I was super impressed with this lens when I had it on the R5. You showed some great pics as examples. Thanks for sharing mate 👍🙏
Thanks buddy! Happy with it myself:) Have a great weekend!
Peter - first let me say that I love hearing your excitement using this camera and reviewing your photos!!! That is something I really love about photography is the excitement. Second, I am watching while editing so commenting as I go!! I LOVE the eye focus tracking on the R7 and on the R5 - it is superb!!! I do not let the ISO go over 800. I just dont get the quality I want past that.... at least for me on the birds we have here. Laughing at you tell them to shut up - you would miss them if you did not have them around. I have to say, every lens I have put on this body has been spot on. My favorite has been the RF 100-500. The detail that you get on that is mind blowing.... at least it was for me. Beautiful birds and thank you for sharing!!!! This camera is amazing - you can crop in for days and still have an amazing photo. Man, I LOVE hearing your excitement. ❤🤗🙏
Haha thanks buddy, yes loving it for sure. Great quality at that pricepoint. I’m sure the RF 100-500 is awesome too. Have fun editing bud and don’t go overboard with the 🥃 haha just kidding. Have a good one John!
@@peterviragphoto Overboard??? Bahahahahaha.... As long as I can get up in the morning, I am OK. ..... Bahahahaha I have my wife to drive if we need to get out! In all seriousness, I only have a glass that I nurse in the evening..... and then a second..... sometimes. 😊 This little camera is amazing. If you are able to hire or rent that lens to try, I think you will really like it on the R7. I prefer the EF lenses on the R7.... except for that one. It blew my mind. If I had not bought the Z9, I would have bought that. 🤗
Thanks John! Haha awesome:)
Hi Peter I thought these images were really good, the photos were brilliant, loved that bird photo with its tongue sticking out ! You can see so much details on these birds 👍 ~ Anna
Thanks a lot Anna!😀 Have a wonderful weekend!
Appetite suitably whetted 😃😃😃😃
Amazing detail Peter mate - love it
Hehe thanks mate. Hope you’re having a nice, relaxing weekend!:)
Another great video Peter.awesome images 👏👏🇦🇺🇦🇺👍👍
Thanks a lot Alex! Loving this camera!
Getting some great images there Peter and that the R7 is delivering the goods 😀
Thanks mate, appreciate it. Happy with it for sure:) Have a great weekend mate!
Amazing detail even at the higher ISOs. Some many excellent images it’s hard to say which is my favorite, but I absolutely love the full wingspan shots!
Thanks buddy, much appreciated. Hope you’re having a nice weekend!
@@peterviragphoto you too, buddy!
That is exceptionally sharp! Thoroughly impressed with how the eye focus is when you zoom into the details in PS. I lol-ed when you shouted at the cockatoos 🤣 Excellent images as usual Peter 😁
Thanks heaps mate. Hope you’re having a nice week!😀
Execelente trabajo
Thx bud
Nice video and beautiful pics. Just picked up mine for a trip to fla. Same lens. My impressions are AF was fine and had no real problem losing focus. Used first curtain but black out caused me to mess up some close BIF shots so I switched to ES and it seemed better. LOTS of noise in the images so anything I was going to post had to be run through topaz. There seemed to me an issue with the IS images jumped around too much in the view finder. Did u experience that? IQ seems a bit soft on a lot of images but sharper on those taken close. Had a problem with the shutter button sticking and the camera shooting continuously. Had to press it again to get it to stop. DP review has a thread on this.
I see a lot of great pics on line so assuming I must be doing something wrong. Have to still play with it some.
Might return it for a R6ll. Talked to BH where I got it and no problem returning it.
I have customised it a fair bit and the keeper rate is pretty high. The softness is due to inaccurate eye AF but that can be worked around by using double back button AF/manually selected single AF point on a secondary button. The IS has some issues when it’s overcompensating and creates the occasional wobble, can be annoying when shooting footage, enhanced IS is slightly better.
Thanks. I will check out the enhanced IS.
Nice video friend👍👍
Thanks!
I've just rented this set up for some shorebird photography next week, I've had some fantastic results with my D500 so I'm curious to see how the bird AF on the R7 compares.
Hey Andy! I think you’re going to be impressed. Feel free to check out how I set up my R7 for BIF ( also see pinned comment for updates ) if you’re interested. Have fun! ua-cam.com/video/3SWtKh7jCA0/v-deo.html
Beautiful pics. I plan on using my 100-400ll on this camera. Undecided between R7 or R6ll. I was surprised to hear of the black out issue. Was that just with the ef lens? Also did u experience any focus issues due to shutter shock? We’re u shooting mechanical or electronic. Thanks again for a great video.
Hi there! Thanks a lot! Blackout happens with the mechanical shutter but shutter shock is negligible and never had AF issues due to that unless shooting at very slow shutter speeds. I use electronic shutter for still/stationery subjects. Blackout happens due to relatively slow sensor readout speed and it would be similar with native rf lenses as well. If you don’t need the extra reach and wanna shoot more in low light too with slightly better AF performance and virtually negligible blackout issues and have the budget then I suggest you get the R6 II. I primarily bought the R7 for macro. Cheers
Hi Peter, i also have R7 and one question - do you use a mechanical or electronic 1st curtain shutter? thanks!
Hi mate. For BIF I use mechanical but 1st curtain should produce similar results and virtually eliminate rolling shutter distortions. It’s just a preference. I suggest you take shots using both in similar scenarios and see what works for you best. For static subjects or slow moving subjects I use the electronic shutter. I also have a video on how exactly I set up the R7 for bird photography here ( with a small adjustment noted in my pinned comment) : CANON R7 Customised AUTO FOCUS SETUP for Bird & Wildlife Photography Best Results

Nice photos. Would RF 100 to 400 perform same as EF that you have? Thanks
Thanks mate. The RF 100-400’s optics are a little worse & the AF speed is affected by the amount of light transmission too but I’ve never used the RF 100-400. I’d say it’s almost on par with RF 100-500 though so never felt the need to upgrade. Good luck with your purchase! Cheers
I had a few questions? Are you experiencing that focus shift issues that many others have been having with the r7 and my second question; were you able to use the mechanical shutter with the EF 100-400 USM ii and how many fps were you able to get?
Haven’t experienced focus shifting much at all. With the mechanical shutter around 13-15 on average.
@@peterviragphoto Thanks so much for your reply. I’ve seen others speaking about out of focus shots and some claiming the mechanical shutter was not working with it at all. Perhaps some sort of setting issue or maybe it’s just that some cameras have the issue. I think perhaps I’ll rent one first before deciding. Thanks again Peter.
Yes, I think that would be a wise choice! Good luck:)
@@peterviragphoto thanks.
I got this 100-400is ii used 9 months ago, lens was in good condition. I used this with my 80d for bird shots. It's But nowadays focus is ghosting lots of time. I took both body and lens to repair shop and they said there is problem in the vr of the lens and said it can't be repair or replaced. They told me to use it till it usable. I am just sad that I have to save again for another gear.
Hey Milan. Is the issue with the image stabilisation? So sorry to hear you’re having issues & that it can’t be repaired . Did you try Canon
Services or a 3rd party repair shop?
Overall, what would you give the R7 on a scale of 1-10 for low light? I shoot waterfowl often and currently have the 90D, which struggles in low light. Thanks!
Hi Luke, due to the relatively small pixel pitch, the low light performance isn’t the best which is expected for an APS-c body, but compared to for example my 80D it’s significantly cleaner up to ISO 2000 or so. I’d give it a 5 or so. Cheers
I tried the RF 100 - 500 with the Canon R7 today and it was HORRIBLE in lower light when at 400 and 500mm. At 1/200th the ISO was shooting up through the roof. Get this lens instead. The 100 - 500 is terrible for any sort of fast motion
Hi Mozzman. I like my EF 100-400 IS II & never felt like ai needed to “upgrade” to the RF 100-500. I wish the RF was a stop faster for sure but then the pricetag would have been even higher…. Thanks for dropping by. Have a great day !😊
@@peterviragphoto I was deciding between the EF 100 - 400 and the RF 100 - 500 and finally went with the 100 - 400. Im so glad I did as its a great lens. You say that if the F stop was faster on the RF 100 - 500 then the price would be higher is COMPLETELY WRONG!!!! Everything RF is MUCH higher price because Canon wont allow any 3rd party RF lenses which means they have hiked their prices to rip everyone off. That is 100% FACT!!!! Canon are being LAZY with their RF lenses and charging ridiculous prices for them. Even their EF lenses have increased by over 24%. Canon are a disgusting GREEDY company.
You really aren't going to get a tragically bad capture with a Prime lense ....
It’s not a prime, it’s an adapted tele zoom. Cheers
@@peterviragphoto Prime / L Lenses aren't Cheap nor affordable to everyone .. That what your using is a £ 2 ,600 plus lense and it's a fraction shy Price wise of the RF100-500 . In my book that's a prime bit of kit .
When I bought the EF 100-400 II, I got it for 2,600AUD which is approx £1,500. The prime lenses at that focal length are a whole different category in both terms of image quality, AF performance in my opinion but definitely way Overpriced. P.s. the RF 100-500 when released was almost about a thousand pounds more expensive here in Oz.
@@peterviragphoto Import duty set by your Goverment makes it impossible for Stockists etc .. to sell realistic prices . hence why they are costing more . The only way Camera gear would be slightly cheaper .. is by the brands opening production facilities .. in Australia,
Presentation is good, but the selection of birds are very unimpressive in respect of camera review.
It’s not a camera review, It’s IQ assessment. In my book all birds are impressive:)Cheers
What autofocusing settings/ other settings and tips do you recommend to get sharp pic with this setup
Hey Lebron, hope your tendon injury has fully healed😀 You can check out what I recommend here: ua-cam.com/video/3SWtKh7jCA0/v-deo.html
