- Vintage lenses for Filmmaking? "Cinematic" and "Filmic" are terms in the Filmmaking industry that get loosely tossed around to describe a certain look we are trying to achieve in our films. There are plenty of factors that go in to achieving that look, both in-camera and in post production. Whilst I agree that the imperfect character of vintage lenses are baked in - in my experience some of the characteristics of modern lenses can be somewhat baked in too. I’ve had situations with the sigma 18-35 where the micro contrast detail around subjects is hard to ease off in post without it looking washed out. It can look a little flat. Many vintage lenses have pleasing contrast and ‘3D pop’ whilst offering a creamy look similar to good cinema glass. The sigma arts and the canon L and R glass can sometimes look a bit heavy handed and less painterly. It’s all subjective though and I suspect I could be talking a load of crap 😅 if in doubt with a corporate client I usually end up playing safe with modern glass. Maybe I should change that though 🤔
You’re right about modern lenses. I would like to purchase a few Sigma Art lenses specifically for client work. I’ve done a lot of work within the dentist community, and the high fidelity look of the Sigma Art lenses was appreciated.
"Painterly" is a great descriptive word for the qualities of certain vintage lenses. Certainly not a characteristic we're seeing in modern glass in my opinion. It's an interesting perspective you presented, the idea that our modern lens image in "baked-in" as well. To you point, it feels like modern lenses are always the "safe" option so opting to go vintage has a bit of an implied risk. Thanks for the great insight and I appreciate the comment!
Another fantastic video from possibility the nicest person on UA-cam. The content absolutely wreaks of earnest care and attention and a thoughtfulness that is quasi religious. Everything that is said here is a point well made and the tone and comprehensive argument of pros and cons is so carefully thought out as to cover all that needs to be said. For anyone interested in filmmaking this is a takeaway that is not meant to undermine all the great camera content that is provided here BUT being this caring well Informed and having a personal quality and demeanour that is calm and considered is the holy triumvirate of filmmaking. This is the dream person on set and on any set when starting up in a career or working in features. There is so much to learn here that may have nothing to do with camera gear but about life in general. A model video in so so many ways. Thank you.

@@TroyMairs I think you come over as a truly genuine person and it easy to not realise how that seems in the context of UA-cam that is fundamentally an influencer driven shop and free advertising for brands selling products. The business model of reviews and promotions means that UA-camrs are sent equipment and effectively bought off by brands to show case their products despite what they say. Just the fact that you don’t do this and seem to focus on the process of filmmaking albeit featuring gear but gear you use makes the difference alone. There are others who do this too but you seem genuinely a nice guy who clearly knows his stuff. I mean nice though not as an end in itself. You seem to have put so much thought and consideration not just into the programming content but your background sets and in your even tone and use of language. The graphics are a nice touch and for many they just wouldn’t bother. That says a lot too. Despite all this you are self effacing and seem to avoid voicing a strong opinion which in itself shows some discipline. When on set I am always struck by the professionalism of crew and their focus and it’s the exact opposite of what I normally see in UA-camrs who quite naturally tend to be individualist who have self motivation and self promotion as a prerequisite. That doesn’t make them wrong but it doesn’t make them the kind of people I would want on set or clients facing necessarily. I think it’s easy to be underestimate how important being a solid citizen is in work and in life. The talent and application should be a given. Filmmaking isn’t rocket science and these days practically anyone can produce a good series of images with the cameras and editing resources available now. Demeanour is something much more nuanced and in some people it makes all the difference. Even the slightly corny cooker gag says a lot. I M not trying to expose your psyche as I really have no idea how you are as a person in reality but if this is how you want to present yourself and it does seem genuine then it has an old school charm that reminds of people that actually smile and say good morning to people they pass in the street. Sorry if that’s not making things clearer but your efforts and work is greatly appreciated.
