  • The world famous Band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines will join us as we commemorate the 75th Anniversary of D-Day at this year's Birmingham International Tattoo. The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines, Plymouth, who are based at HMS Raleigh, is one of five Royal Marines Bands based around the United Kingdom. The band is continually in demand performing across the UK and abroad.

Counting the School of music, the Royal marines have six bands, all with an attached Corps of Drums.

Another excellent performance by the Plymouth Band. But there again rumour has it, that they claim to be
    "THE BEST" Royal Marine Band.

No objections from me either! they are certainly an excellent band! but over twice the size of any marine band, I'd like to see them against a band of equal size maybe two RM bands, the marine bands for me are military bands with a rich history so therefore would edge it over the K&G band but that's only my opinion! 😉

Believe you watched the massed bands. Bit of size difference between the massed bands and the individual bands -- like Portsmouth and other bases.

Keep in mind K & G consist of amateurs only. They have day jobs or are college students and play music for a hobby. They practice in their spare time, usually once a week on Saturdays. They also pay for everything out of their own pockets. The military bands are professionals who get a decent pay including cost of uniforms, travel, food etc, and practice several times a week.

@@katerinakemp5701 Yes, the march on was Sarie Marais ..... the march at 8:00 is "Gibraltar" ..... the stirring march composed by former Principal Director of Music for the Royal Marines, Lieut.Colonel Richard Waterer, RM (RIP)

Nice, but not quite in the same class as the Dutch amateur show and marching band K & G we saw at the end of the tattoo. That was real something special.

@ Hi Joel. 1. The British band consists of professional musicians. They had completed conservatorium, or similar, before they joined the military. They receive a decent wage; uniforms, transport and meals are provided free
. They rehearse just about everyday, unless they are performing.Their 9 min. performance at the tattoo was nice but not spectacular.A simple entry march (Sarie Marais) and another couple of easy pieces. 2. The amateur Dutch band members do it for a hobby. They all start receiving their training when they join the band. They have to pay for transport, meals, uniforms themselves or raise funds and donations. The members either still study or have a day job. They can only rehearse once a week outside normal work hours. 3. The tattoo T .V. presenter said they were one of Europe`s best bands. Actually they are one of world`s best. For the past 50 years they consistently earned first places in world contests. Their 16 min. performance at the tattoo was spectacular and professional, their varied music and sound were beautiful and balanced and did not suffer from their complex show movements. The tattoo organisers kept the best till last. (4. In case you wonder, I am a British subject.) Rgds.

delloso thanks. I've never seen this Dutch band you speak of. Could you please provide a name or a link? You're right, of course, that the HM Marine band is composed of professionals. Of the many military bands I've seen, they seem to be the best.

@ Hi Joel. You can see the Dutch K & G on the Birmingham tattoo video of course. They were the last on the program. The name of the Dutch Show and Marching Band is in short ``K & G``which I believe in full is ``Kunst en Genoegen (Art and Enjoyment) ``. There are numerous film clips on You Tube. They have 2 or 3 different types of uniforms (some marine styled). There is also a Junior band, age 7 till 14 I believe,, which is also very good plus an excellent concert and big band to enjoy. Greetings.

@ You can see the performance of the dutch band at the Birmingham Tattoo at this very channel. And it is right: many European civil amateur Show- and Marchingbands perform a huge lot better than the professional ones. I am a musician at a German band similar to K&G, we work with the same instructors. They are absolutely spectacular, kind of idols for my band as well.
